If a Discord server appears hijacked, warn members through a channel you still trust, stop anyone from following suspicious instructions, preserve links to the offending messages, and report the incident through the correct Discord route. Use the hacked-account process for an account takeover; use Trust & Safety for rule-breaking messages, scam bots, or phishing content. Do not ask members to mass-report the same material.
What to do in the first few minutes
Treat an unexpected announcement, unfamiliar bot, sudden permission change, or message directing members to a login page as a possible compromise until you can verify it. Move quickly, but do not destroy evidence or amplify the scam.
- Use a channel that remains trustworthy. Post in a channel, announcement area, or other contact route that you can still verify and control. If every visible channel is suspect, contact members through an established out-of-band route such as a previously used community email list or social account. Discord’s guidance supports warning about malicious links and bots; choosing the communication channel is an operational decision for the server team, not a Discord-mandated procedure.
- Tell members exactly what to avoid. Instruct them not to open unexpected links, download files, add unfamiliar bots, or provide passwords or account tokens to anyone claiming to be support.
- Preserve evidence before deleting anything. Copy the message links for suspicious posts, record the sender and bot names, note approximate times, and save screenshots if the content may disappear. A message link is specifically required for reports about violating content.
- Stop secondary scams. Attackers often follow a public incident with direct messages pretending to offer recovery. Remind members that Discord says official messages carry an OFFICIAL badge and that “Discord will never ask you for your password or account token.”
- Choose the right report route. Report an account takeover through Discord’s hacked-account support flow. Report abusive or rule-breaking messages, phishing content, and suspicious bots through Trust & Safety.
How to warn members without making the incident worse
Keep the first announcement short and factual
State what is known, what is uncertain, and the behavior members must avoid. If the team has not confirmed the takeover, say the server “may have been compromised” rather than declaring a confirmed breach. Do not publish unverified explanations about who is responsible or promise a recovery time.
A useful notice identifies the risky actions in plain language:

- Do not click links posted unexpectedly or enter Discord credentials on a page reached from one.
- Do not download an unexpected file.
- Do not invite or authorize an unfamiliar bot.
- Do not send a password, account token, or other secret to anyone claiming to be Discord support.
- Check for the OFFICIAL badge before trusting a supposed Discord message.
Pin the notice if that feature is still available, and repeat it only when there is a material update. Reposting constantly can bury the evidence and make it harder for members to distinguish the genuine notice from imitations.
Copy-and-paste member announcement
Security notice: We believe this server may have been compromised. Do not click links or download files posted unexpectedly, invite unfamiliar bots, or share your password or account token with anyone claiming to be Discord support. Discord says genuine official messages carry an OFFICIAL badge and will never ask for your password or token. We are reporting the incident and will post updates here when we can verify them.
This is a server-team template, not a quotation from Discord. Replace the final sentence only with information you can verify. Do not ask members to report the same message in a coordinated campaign.

There are two related but different problems: an account may have been taken over, and the server may contain content that violates Discord’s rules. Selecting the wrong route can delay the response or leave the actual evidence out of the report.

How to report violating messages
Collect the message link
For a report about a specific message, preserve its direct message link before removing or hiding content if you can do so safely. Include links for the smallest set of posts that demonstrates the problem. Add the server, channel, author, approximate time, and a neutral description so the reviewer can understand the context without guessing.
If several messages are part of one incident, organize them in your notes and submit the report according to Discord’s current Safety instructions. Do not create multiple reports simply because several people saw the same post.
Avoid false, malicious, and duplicate reports
Discord’s reporting guidance discourages false or malicious reports, multiple reports about one issue, and asking a group to report identical content. A coordinated flood does not make a report stronger; it can obscure the original evidence. Ask members to preserve information and protect their accounts instead of directing them to submit duplicate complaints.

How to recover a compromised account
When the email address has not changed
Start with Discord’s account-compromise guidance and Trust & Safety route. Secure any email account associated with Discord, change reused passwords from a clean device, and review other services that used the same credentials. Those protective actions reduce additional exposure; they do not replace the Discord support request.

When the attacker changed the email address
Discord’s hacked-account guidance says to submit a support ticket, select “Hacked Account”, and provide the original username and email address. Include your UserID if possible and supply the requested details about how and when the compromise occurred. The referenced guidance is a Brazilian Portuguese page dated December 19, 2025, so the exact wording and location of form labels may differ in your locale; use the labels displayed in the current support form.
Use the original account information, not an address supplied by the attacker. Keep the description chronological: when you last had access, what changed, which messages or bots appeared, whether the email was changed, and what steps you have already taken. Do not send a password or account token in a support request unless Discord’s current official form explicitly and securely requests information that is not a secret; Discord’s official-message guidance says it will never ask for your password or account token.
Discord cautions that it may be unable to help recover an account if the account was not secured. Do not tell members that filing a ticket guarantees restoration.
How to recognize a genuine Discord message
Discord says official messages carry an OFFICIAL badge in the member list and in the direct message. Treat the badge as one verification step, not a reason to surrender credentials. Discord also states: “Discord will never ask you for your password or account token.” A person who requests either item is not following that rule, even if the message uses an official-looking logo, urgent language, or a link to a familiar-looking page.

- Do not move a recovery conversation to an unfamiliar direct-message account because someone claims the public channel is unsafe.
- Do not authorize a bot as a condition of receiving help.
- Do not install a file offered as a “security tool” or “verification client.”
- Open support through Discord’s known support entry point rather than through a link supplied by an unsolicited helper.
Warn members about impersonators after the first announcement. A public compromise can create a second wave of fraud aimed at frightened users who are actively looking for help.
What suspicious bots and links can do
Discord warns that scam bots and suspicious links can compromise accounts or a server. A bot that suddenly requests broad permissions, directs users to an external verification page, or begins posting unexpected files deserves the same caution as a phishing message. Report suspicious bots to Trust & Safety with the message links and identifying information you have.
Avoid testing a suspicious link with a personal account. You can document its visible text and location without opening it. If a malicious bot deletes channels, messages, or other server content, Discord Trust & Safety warns: “If anything gets deleted, we have no way of restoring what was lost!” Attribute that warning to Discord and treat deletion as a potential permanent loss, not a reversible cleanup step.
Evidence checklist for the report
- Direct links to the violating messages.
- Server and channel names, plus IDs if you already have them.
- Author, bot, or account names and IDs when available.
- Approximate timestamps and your time zone.
- Screenshots showing the message, link text, permissions request, or impersonation details.
- A short timeline: normal activity, first suspicious event, account or email change, and actions taken.
- Whether members clicked, downloaded, authorized a bot, or entered credentials.
Keep original files unchanged and store them somewhere the suspected attacker cannot edit. Redact members’ passwords, tokens, payment details, and unrelated private conversations before sharing screenshots. Never include a password or token in a report.

Common mistakes and safer alternatives

What a responsible update looks like
Post an update when a fact changes: a suspicious message was reported, an account owner regained access, or a new impersonation attempt appeared. Identify the action taken without exposing private ticket numbers, member data, or credentials. If there is no verified change, leave the original warning in place rather than speculating.
Do not imply that every member will be punished because a compromised server contained rule-breaking content. Discord distinguishes warnings from violations. A warning may reach people who were in a server with rule-breaking content or interacted with it without participating; Discord says warnings do not affect account standing. A violation is different and may affect account standing. The fact that a member received a warning does not by itself prove that the member caused the incident.
Operational checklist for server owners and moderators
- Confirm which channel or contact route is still trustworthy.
- Publish the concise security notice and identify the actions members must not take.
- Capture message links, screenshots, bot details, and timestamps.
- Tell affected account owners to use Discord’s hacked-account support route.
- Submit a focused Trust & Safety report for violating messages, phishing, or suspicious bots.
- Do not solicit duplicate reports or publish unverified recovery instructions.
- Monitor for follow-up impersonation messages and update members only with verified facts.
- Keep a private incident timeline so later support replies can be answered consistently.
Questions members commonly ask
Should I report the same message if another member already did?
Usually no. Discord discourages multiple reports about one issue and coordinated reporting. Give the server team any additional evidence instead of creating a duplicate submission.

No. Discord says a warning does not affect account standing, while a violation may. A warning can reach someone who was present in a server with rule-breaking content or interacted with it without participating.
Can a support representative ask for my token to verify ownership?
No. Discord’s official guidance says it will never ask for your password or account token. End the conversation and use the official support route.
What if I cannot prove the server was hacked?
Report what you can substantiate: the message links, suspicious bot or link behavior, account changes, and timestamps. Describe uncertainty accurately and tell members to avoid the risky actions while the report is reviewed.
