If you spot a UPI debit you did not authorize, contact your bank immediately through its official reporting channel, report the cyber fraud through 1930 or the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal, and raise a grievance in your UPI app. An initiated UPI payment cannot be stopped with a stop-payment request, so “blocking” means securing access to prevent further unauthorized activity while you report and dispute the completed transaction—not guaranteed cancellation or refund.
What to do first after an unauthorized UPI debit
Use these channels in parallel: the bank handles urgent account security and transaction redressal; the national cybercrime channel records the financial fraud; and the UPI app gives you a transaction-level grievance route. One report does not replace the others.
- Contact your bank immediately. Use the reporting details in your bank’s official app, website, statement, or card. Clearly say that the UPI transaction was unauthorized and ask the bank to take immediate steps to prevent further unauthorized debits and secure the affected account or payment access. Request an acknowledgment and complaint reference, then save them. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) requires banks to offer round-the-clock reporting channels and to take immediate preventive steps after notification (RBI customer-protection direction).
- Report the financial cyber fraud. Call 1930 or use the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal instructions. Be ready to provide your mobile number, bank or wallet, the account or UPI identifier debited, transaction ID, date, and—if card credentials were involved—the card number. Keep screenshots if available. The published instructions say that after reporting by helpline, you must complete portal registration within 24 hours using the acknowledgment or login ID. Save the SMS or email acknowledgment.
- Raise a grievance in the UPI app. Open the transaction in its history and use the app’s help or grievance option; keep the resulting reference. NPCI says users can raise a grievance or check status through the participating bank’s UPI app, but its complaint portal directs fraudulent, unidentified, or unauthorized transaction complaints to the bank (NPCI UPI FAQ; NPCI complaint portal).
- Secure any exposed access. Ask the bank which account and UPI/payment access needs to be secured and follow its official process. If your phone or SIM is lost, contact the bank and block the mobile number; NPCI notes that the number is used for UPI device registration. Never give anyone your UPI PIN, OTP, password, or remote-access code. NPCI says bank support will never ask for your UPI PIN (NPCI UPI FAQ).
- Keep following up. Quote the bank complaint number and cybercrime acknowledgment when contacting either channel again. If the matter remains unresolved, use the bank’s grievance escalation route. NPCI’s UPI complaint facility routes complaints to the member bank or institution, which is responsible for resolution; checking a status with NPCI is not the bank’s final decision (NPCI complaint portal).
What details and evidence to keep
Make one record you can refer to in calls, app complaints, and follow-ups. Keep:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Transaction reference or ID, including the RRN if available, date and time, and amount.
- The payer or beneficiary details displayed, the UPI app used, and the bank account involved.
- Bank complaint acknowledgment, cybercrime acknowledgment, and UPI app grievance reference.
- Relevant screenshots, notifications, calls, and messages.
The NPCI complaint portal requests transaction date, transaction number or RRN, bank, and account details. The cybercrime instructions ask for the transaction ID and date and accept screenshots when available (NPCI complaint portal; National Cybercrime Reporting Portal instructions).

Can you stop or reverse a UPI payment?
No stop-payment request can stop a UPI transfer once payment has been initiated. NPCI’s FAQ answers, “No, once the payment is initiated, it cannot be stopped.” Reporting quickly is still important: it lets the bank take steps against further unauthorized activity and starts the complaint process, but it does not guarantee that the completed transfer will be reversed (NPCI UPI FAQ).
If the transaction failed but your account was debited
A failed transaction is different from a completed fraudulent transfer. NPCI says declined transactions may reverse in real time; if a debit for a failed transaction is not returned, contact your bank. Do not treat that guidance as a promise about recovery of a completed unauthorized payment (NPCI UPI FAQ).

How RBI rules affect your possible liability
RBI’s customer-liability directions cover unauthorized electronic banking transactions. The outcome depends on who was responsible and how soon you notified the bank; these rules do not guarantee a refund in every UPI fraud case.
Recommended Free Tools
- Third-party breach, with neither you nor the bank at fault: RBI’s 2017 direction provides zero customer liability if you report within three working days of receiving the bank’s transaction communication. Reporting in four to seven working days limits liability to the transaction amount or the applicable amount in the RBI table, whichever is lower. For reports after seven working days, the bank’s board-approved policy applies.
- Customer negligence, such as sharing credentials: the customer bears the loss until reporting; losses after reporting are borne by the bank.
- Eligible zero- or limited-liability cases: the bank must provide a shadow credit within 10 working days after your notification, without waiting for an insurance claim. It must resolve the complaint and establish liability within its policy timeline, capped at 90 days. RBI places the burden of proving customer liability on the bank.
These are the 2017 RBI direction’s rules for covered unauthorized electronic banking transactions. The bank must assess whether your particular case qualifies (RBI customer-protection direction).
