Use the reporting control attached to the exact Facebook post, photo, comment, message, or account involved, then select the reason that best describes what happened. A hacked account follows a different recovery process at facebook.com/hacked; a privacy-setting problem may require changing an audience control or reporting a bug.
Reporting starts Facebook’s review. It does not by itself prove a violation or guarantee removal. You can monitor the decision in Support Inbox, request another review when Facebook offers that option, and—only for some twice-reviewed decisions—appeal to the Oversight Board.
Choose the correct Facebook route first
The fastest way to get a useful result is to match the action to the problem. Reporting a post will not restore access to an account, and changing an audience setting will not remove somebody else’s abusive profile.

Report a Facebook post, photo, comment, or other content
Use this route when the issue is a specific item or behavior: harassment, threats, hate speech, nudity, scams, privacy violations, or another suspected Community Standards breach. Report the item itself rather than sending a general complaint about the person who posted it.

On the item, open its reporting menu
- Open the post, photo, video, comment, message, or other item that concerns you.
- Open the menu attached to that item. On different surfaces this may be shown as a three-dot button, an options menu, or a similarly labeled control.
- Choose the displayed Report option.
- Select the category that most accurately explains the conduct. Follow any additional prompts, such as identifying whether the content involves harassment, impersonation, a threat, or another safety concern.
- Submit the report and keep any reference or confirmation information Facebook shows.
The wording and location of the control can vary between the computer site, mobile app, mobile browser, and content type. Do not look for one universal button label; use the menu belonging to the item you are viewing.
Choose the closest accurate reason
Categories guide the review, so choose the explanation that fits the evidence rather than selecting several unrelated reasons. If the problem is that private information was exposed, describe the privacy aspect. If the problem is a direct threat, choose the safety or threat category offered. If an account is pretending to be you, use the impersonation option when it appears.
Save the original URL or take screenshots before submitting when doing so is safe. Include the surrounding context if it changes the meaning of the item, but do not engage with an abusive person merely to collect evidence. If the content is an immediate danger, contact local emergency services as well as using Facebook’s reporting tools.
What a content report can and cannot do
Facebook says it reviews reports against its Community Standards. A report is a request for review, not a finding that the rules were broken. Facebook may hide or remove content when its review finds a violation, but it may also leave the item visible when the review does not find one.
Submitting the same report repeatedly, or encouraging many people to submit duplicate reports, does not automatically force removal. The decision is based on Facebook’s review of the reported material and applicable standards.
Recover a hacked or compromised account
If someone changed your password, took over your profile, added an unfamiliar email address or phone number, or is posting from your account without permission, do not use an ordinary content report as the main remedy. Facebook directs compromised-account users to facebook.com/hacked, preferably on a device they have used to log in before.

Use the account-recovery route
- Open a familiar device and browser if possible. A device previously used for Facebook login can help Facebook recognize the account.
- Go directly to
facebook.com/hacked. Avoid links sent in unsolicited messages; phishing pages can imitate a recovery form. - Follow the identity and account-security prompts shown by Facebook. The exact screens can change as Facebook updates its recovery process.
- Choose the account you need to recover and remove or replace unfamiliar contact details when Facebook gives you that option.
- Set a new password that is unique to Facebook. Do not reuse a password exposed on another service.
If you still control the email account or phone number connected to Facebook, secure that account too. An attacker who controls your email can often reset Facebook again, so change the email password and review its recovery addresses, forwarding rules, and active sessions.

Secure the account after you regain access
- Review recent login activity and sign out devices or locations you do not recognize.
- Turn on login alerts so Facebook can notify you about unfamiliar access.
- Enable two-factor authentication using an available method you can protect. Store recovery codes somewhere safe and offline.
- Check your profile, page roles, advertising accounts, payment methods, connected apps, and recent messages for changes you did not make.
- Warn friends if the compromised account sent suspicious links or requests while you were locked out.
- Do not give a password, one-time code, or recovery code to somebody claiming to be Facebook support.
Facebook’s security guidance also points users toward login alerts, two-factor authentication, and phishing awareness. These measures reduce the chance that a recovered account will be taken over again, but they do not replace the recovery route when access has already been lost.
Report impersonation in Messenger
For an impersonating account encountered inside a Messenger conversation, Facebook’s documented sequence is specific:
- Open the Messenger conversation.
- Choose Privacy & support.
- Choose Report.
- Select Pretending to be someone.
- Identify whom the account is pretending to be.
- Submit the report.
The Messenger help instructions direct people who are reporting impersonation on Facebook itself to the Facebook Help Center. A profile report on Facebook may use different labels and screens, so do not assume that the Messenger workflow exactly describes the profile workflow.
Preserve the conversation details that establish the deception, such as the account name, profile link displayed in the conversation, dates, and messages. Do not send money, identity documents, passwords, or verification codes to the impersonator. If the conversation includes a credible threat or extortion, save evidence and contact law enforcement where appropriate.

Not every privacy concern is a reportable violation. Sometimes information is visible because an audience setting permits it. Other times a control appears not to work. Treat those cases differently.

Change who can see your information
- Open Facebook’s Settings & privacy.
- Go to Audience and visibility.
- Open the section that matches the information or activity you want to control.
- Review the available audience choices and select the narrowest option that meets your needs.
- Save the change, then inspect the profile or post again to confirm the displayed audience.
Relevant sections can include profile details, how people find or contact you, posts, stories, followers, tagging, and blocking. Available controls can depend on the type of profile you use, so two accounts may not show identical options.
Changing a future audience does not necessarily alter copies that other people already downloaded, screenshotted, reshared, or quoted. If a particular post or image is abusive or violates a rule, report that item separately instead of relying only on a general privacy setting.
Report a technical privacy bug
If the selected audience is not being honored, a control is missing, or a setting repeatedly reverts without an expected explanation, use Facebook’s Report a Bug route. Describe the exact setting, the audience you selected, what another person can see, and the device or app context. Screenshots that do not expose unnecessary personal information can make the defect easier to understand.

For example, a public profile detail, a tagged post, a story audience, and a follower setting are separate controls. Correcting one does not automatically change the others.
Remove a result cached by a search engine
Facebook does not control an external search engine’s cached result. If a search page displays an old Facebook snippet or cached copy after you changed or deleted the underlying content, use that search engine’s own removal or outdated-content process. Report the Facebook item separately only if the item itself violates Facebook’s rules.
Check the result in Support Inbox
Facebook says that after you report content, it sends a notification to Support Inbox, where you can check the status of something you reported. Open Support Inbox through Facebook’s account menus and look for the area covering reports about others.

The status can indicate that a report is still being reviewed or that Facebook reached a decision. Facebook says it will notify you whether the reported content did or did not violate its standards. Keep the report reference and the decision notification together if you may need to follow up.

Request another review when the option appears
If Facebook leaves the content up and offers a further-review control, use that control from the Support Inbox decision. Explain the specific part of the decision you believe is wrong and identify the relevant content. Facebook’s Help Center describes requested second reviews as usually completed within 24 hours. That is a stated typical timing, not a guaranteed deadline, and the actual interface or timing can differ.
Understand the Oversight Board limitation
After Facebook has reviewed a content decision twice, some decisions may qualify for appeal to the Meta Oversight Board. Eligibility is limited, and the Board selects only some eligible appeals; not every report can be sent there.
The Facebook Help Center page describing this process states that an appeal must be filed within 15 days after the decision. Because deadlines and eligibility rules can change, rely on the current appeal flow shown for your decision and confirm the available deadline before submitting.

- Capture the item’s text, images, account name, and visible date or time.
- Record the profile, post, or conversation address when Facebook displays one.
- Note what you saw, what you expected, and why it creates a privacy or safety concern.
- Keep a timeline if the behavior is repeated or escalates.
- Blur unrelated private information before sharing screenshots with anyone who does not need it.
- Store evidence in a secure location and restrict access to trusted people.
Do not threaten the other person with a report, publish their private information in retaliation, or click links they send you. Those actions can escalate the situation and may compromise your own account.

Troubleshoot common reporting problems
The report button is missing
Confirm that you opened the menu attached to the exact item, not a page-level menu. Try the current Facebook app, a desktop browser, or the mobile browser if one surface does not show the control. Menu labels can vary by content type, account type, and interface version.
The wrong category is the only one shown
Select the closest truthful category and explain the essential facts in any follow-up field. Do not label ordinary disagreement as a threat or impersonation merely to obtain a different workflow. If the issue is a broken control rather than harmful content, use the bug-report route.
You cannot see the report status
Check Support Inbox while signed in to the same account that submitted the report. Notifications may take time to appear, and a report about another person is distinct from a report concerning your own account. Keep the confirmation information in case Facebook later asks you to identify the report.
The content is still visible after reporting
Visibility does not prove that the report failed. Facebook may still be reviewing it, or its review may have concluded that the content does not violate Community Standards. Read the decision in Support Inbox and request another review only when Facebook offers that option.
You cannot recover the account
Return to facebook.com/hacked from a previously used device, secure the email account associated with Facebook, and avoid third-party “recovery” services that request payment or login codes. If you regain access, immediately review sessions, contact details, connected apps, and two-factor authentication.
