To reply to a GST notice in India, first identify the legal provision, notice form and deadline stated in the complete notice; then prepare a point-by-point response, file it through the applicable channel and save proof of submission. There is no single reply period or form for every GST notice. The steps below explain how to find the relevant route and avoid relying on an assumed deadline.

This is general information about India’s central GST framework, not advice on a particular case. Check the current law and GST Portal instructions for your notice.

How do I reply to a GST notice?

Start with the notice itself, not a general rule of thumb. Read every page and attachment, then record the details that determine what you must do:

  • GSTIN, issuing officer, case or reference number and tax period.
  • The notice date and the date and mode by which it was served, if shown.
  • The section cited, notice form and any stated reply date.
  • The proposed tax, interest or penalty, the documents requested, and any hearing details.

Keep the complete notice and attachments together. Set an internal reminder ahead of the stated due date so there is time to resolve questions or portal problems. If the date or service details are unclear, seek qualified advice or contact the issuing office promptly; do not wait for a presumed standard period.

What is the time limit to reply to a GST notice?

The response period depends on the proceeding and the notice. Use the date in the complete notice, then check the current provision and applicable rules. Do not treat a payment option or a deadline from another kind of notice as your reply deadline.

Notice pathway Form and response information What to check
Return scrutiny under section 61 GSTN identifies ASMT-10 as a notice intimating discrepancies and ASMT-11 as the taxpayer’s reply form. Read the notice for its deadline and the specific discrepancies that need an explanation.
Demand proceedings summarized in DRC-01 CGST Rule 142 identifies DRC-06 for the reply or representation to the specified notice. Review the underlying notice as well as the DRC-01 summary, and confirm the current rule and notice-specific deadline.
Section 63 notice to an unregistered taxable person CBIC’s assessment-rules guidance describes an ASMT-14 notice and a 15-day reply period before an ASMT-15 order may be passed. This is a route-specific example, not a deadline for all GST notices. Check the actual notice and current law.

The 15-day period above is the example stated on CBIC’s assessment rules page, which is undated. It does not establish a universal GST-notice period. Rule 142 also describes a 30-day payment route in specified section 73 or 74 circumstances; that is not a general reply deadline, and it should not be read as an instruction to pay every notice.

Which form do I use to reply to a GST notice?

Match the form to the cited provision and proceeding. The notice form, the summary uploaded to the portal and the response form serve different roles, so do not select a reply form simply because it is familiar.

  • ASMT-10: For the scrutiny pathway described by GSTN, this communicates return discrepancies; ASMT-11 is the taxpayer’s reply form.
  • DRC-01: In specified demand proceedings, this is an electronic summary accompanying the notice. Rule 142 identifies DRC-06 for the response. Read the underlying notice too; do not assume the summary replaces it.
  • ASMT-14: CBIC’s guidance associates this notice with a section 63 proceeding against an unregistered taxable person. The related order form identified there is ASMT-15.

These examples do not cover every GST proceeding or establish every form-and-deadline combination. Check the form named in your notice and current rules before filing.

Where can I see a GST notice on the portal?

Sign in to the GST Portal and look for the logged-in area for additional notices or orders; GSTN material describes notices and DRC-01 as available there. Portal labels and screens can change, so follow the current on-screen instructions rather than relying on an older tutorial’s exact menu names. Keep a copy of the notice and any attachments you download.

After filing, retain the response exactly as submitted and the portal acknowledgment or reference number. Also keep any evidence showing when the notice was served and when the reply was filed. These records help you verify what was sent and when.

How to prepare a point-by-point reply

  1. Break the notice into allegations or questions. Number them in the same order as the notice so the reviewer can match each answer to the issue raised.
  2. State your position on each point. Say whether you accept it, dispute it or need to clarify it. Explain the factual basis and, where relevant, the legal basis. Avoid unsupported assertions or casually admitting liability.
  3. Reconcile figures to records. Depending on the issue, use the relevant returns, invoices, payment records, reconciliations or input-tax-credit documents to show how the figures were reached.
  4. Label and connect attachments. Give each document a clear name and refer to it beside the point it supports. Include relevant records rather than an unorganized bulk upload.
  5. Review before filing. Check that every question is answered, the attachments are legible and the selected form matches the proceeding. Follow any hearing instructions stated in the notice.

Sections 73 and 74 of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017 describe notices requiring a person to show cause about a proposed amount, interest and any applicable penalty. The exact allegations and legal route depend on the notice and applicable law; a response should address what the notice actually says.

What if the notice includes a payment option?

Do not confuse an option to make or report a payment with the requirement to respond. Rule 142 describes DRC-03 as a payment intimation and DRC-04 as an acknowledgment in specified circumstances; it also describes DRC-05 as a conclusion of proceedings where the rule’s conditions are met. The rule’s specified 30-day payment route is limited to particular circumstances and is not a blanket deadline or direction to pay every demand. Check the notice, the current rule and professional advice before deciding whether to pay or contest an amount.

When should I get professional help?

Ask a qualified GST practitioner or tax lawyer to review the matter promptly if it involves a fraud, wilful misstatement or suppression allegation; substantial tax, interest or penalty exposure; conflicting reconciliations; multiple periods or registrations; a personal hearing; a limitation issue; or an order that has already been issued. The distinction between ordinary and fraud-related demand proceedings can affect the route and consequences, so classification matters.

If an order has already been passed, do not treat the matter as an ordinary notice reply. Check the order, the next procedural step and any applicable time limit with a qualified adviser without delay.

Before you submit: a short checklist

  • Have you read the complete notice and all attachments?
  • Have you recorded the cited section, form, service details and stated deadline?
  • Does your response use the form and channel applicable to this proceeding?
  • Does each allegation have a clear answer and supporting records?
  • Have you saved the submitted reply, attachments and acknowledgment?
