Whether you can replace a key on an HP laptop depends on the exact model, the key mechanism, and your warranty status. If the laptop is still under warranty, HP advises having it serviced rather than removing a key yourself. For an out-of-warranty notebook, HP’s removal-and-cleaning instructions apply only when the key is designed to come off; a broken or missing key may require a model-specific part or service.
First decide whether to remove the key
Check your warranty status before trying to lift a keycap. HP says to have the computer serviced if it is under warranty, if the key cannot be unstuck, or if the keyboard does not have removable keys. Removing a key is not a universal fix, and forcing one can damage the mechanism beneath it. See HP’s keyboard troubleshooting guidance.
If the laptop is out of warranty and the key is visibly designed to come off, HP’s instructions describe removing and cleaning a stuck key. Cleaning may resolve sticking, but it is not guaranteed to repair a broken or missing key.
How to clean a removable, stuck key
- Shut down and disconnect power. Turn off the notebook and unplug the AC adapter. If its battery is removable, remove it.
- Lift the key gently. Use a flat plastic pry tool at the top or bottom edge of the key. HP cautions: “To avoid damaging the pad under the key, insert the flat plastic pry tool only 1/8 inch under the edge of the key.” Do not push the tool farther beneath the key or force a key that does not lift readily. HP’s instructions for cleaning a stuck key specify this limit.
- Clean the key and opening. Use a cotton swab on the key and its slot, then use compressed air to clear debris.
- Reinstall the key. Snap it back into place. Longer keys, including the space bar and Enter key, may have a small metal support rod; make sure the rod is inserted into the key before reinstalling it.
If a key is missing, broken, or will not reattach
Do not assume a keycap from another HP laptop—or a generic keycap—will fit. HP’s cleaning procedure is not a universal replacement guide. The key mechanism and compatible replacement parts depend on the specific notebook. If the key is broken or will not stay attached, identify the computer and check HP’s parts information or contact HP support about service. HP advises service when the keyboard lacks removable keys or a key cannot be unstuck. HP Support.

Find the correct HP part for your notebook
Use the notebook’s exact product number, serial number, or part number when looking up replacement parts. HP says these identifiers are on the service tag affixed to the bottom of the notebook. Search the regional HP PartSurfer or HP Parts Store, or ask HP support to confirm the compatible option. Part availability can vary by model and region, so a listing for a similar-looking laptop is not enough to establish compatibility. HP describes its certified replacement parts as tested against its quality and compatibility standards; choose the part listed for your exact device.
Some HP illustrated catalogs list a “top cover with keyboard” rather than an individual keycap. That is one example of a keyboard assembly being the available replacement; it does not mean every HP laptop uses the same assembly. Before ordering or arranging repair, confirm the exact model and listed part number, whether the proposed fix is a keycap or a larger keyboard assembly, and that the keyboard layout, language, and backlight configuration match your device. Consider warranty coverage and whether you are comfortable performing the repair; if not, use HP service or a qualified repair provider.

If more than one key is failing
When the integrated keyboard has broader problems, HP recommends running a keyboard test with HP PC Hardware Diagnostics. If the built-in keyboard does not work, service or replacement may be necessary. A wired USB keyboard can serve as a temporary way to use the notebook while you arrange a diagnosis or repair.
