If your fantasy tight end is ruled out, first confirm the news and your league’s lineup deadline, then check who is actually available. Choose a replacement based on expected routes and targets, role stability, passing situation, scoring format and matchup—not simply because he is the injured player’s backup. A teammate’s absence may create an opportunity, but it does not guarantee useful fantasy volume.
1. Confirm the status and your lineup deadline
Make sure the player is ruled out for the specific game you need to set your lineup for. Injury news changes during the week, and a report for an earlier week is not evidence of a player’s status now. For example, the NFL’s Week 1, 2026 injury report applies to those games only; check the current week’s official report and your fantasy platform for updates.
Next, check when your league locks the tight end slot. NFL.com Fantasy’s 2024 rules say lineup changes can be made before the player’s NFL team is scheduled to start, but that is specific to NFL.com Fantasy. Other platforms and custom leagues may have different lock times or late-swap rules. Verify the rule in your own league rather than assuming the same deadline applies.
2. Find out who you can add in time
Look at the free-agent pool and waiver settings before settling on a name. A player may be unrostered but unavailable to add immediately because a claim is pending, or your league may use a different transaction process. NFL.com Fantasy’s 2024 official rules describe its waiver claims and processing; treat those rules as platform-specific, not universal.

- Check whether the candidate is a free agent or on waivers.
- Confirm when claims process and whether your claim can clear before the player’s game.
- Check whether your league has roster or transaction limits that affect the move.
- Confirm that the player fits your lineup rules and scoring format.
3. Compare available tight ends by opportunity
When more than one replacement is available, start with evidence about how the player is being used. Routes and targets can help show whether he is part of the passing game; snaps or participation and a changing role can add context. Recent catches or a touchdown matter, but a single strong result does not establish a dependable workload.

| League fit | Is the player available, eligible, and a sensible fit for your scoring and roster format? | A good option in one league may not be obtainable or equally valuable in another. |
4. Treat backup opportunities as conditional
A starter’s absence can open routes and targets, but the backup may not inherit enough of either to become a reliable fantasy starter. NFL Fantasy’s Week 2, 2026 analysis made that distinction with Michael Mayer: Matt Okada wrote, “Mayer is an excellent start if Brock Bowers (knee) is inactive again.” The article reported that Mayer ran 23 routes, second-most among Raiders players, and led the team with seven targets in Week 1. Those figures and the recommendation belong to that dated example, not to a later week or a guarantee of future usage. Likewise, NFL Fantasy’s Week 3, 2026 article noted that Pat Freiermuth had caught nine of 10 targets through two games and cited a favorable Cincinnati matchup; it mentioned AJ Barner as a streamer for an extremely deep league. In that matchup discussion, it reported Cincinnati had allowed 26.0 fantasy points to Dalton Schultz. Use the available evidence to select the candidate with the most credible role for your format. In a deeper league, a streamer with a plausible route to targets may be preferable to leaving the slot empty; in a shallower league, compare the replacement with any other eligible option already on your roster. Scoring settings matter, so use your league’s scoring rather than assuming all receptions and touchdowns are valued the same way.

If no candidate has a supported opportunity, be honest about the uncertainty. Do not label a speculative depth-chart promotion or a matchup-only pick a sure start. Weekly start/sit advice itself varies by player profile: NFL Fantasy’s Week 1, 2026 tight-end analysis, for instance, recommended streaming away from Mark Andrews in that week’s context. It is an example of week-specific judgment, not advice for the current lineup.
6. Recheck before the slot locks
- Open the current-week injury report and confirm whether your starter and any candidate whose role depends on an injury have a final status.
- Check your fantasy lineup lock time and transaction status, including whether a waiver claim will process in time.
- Review the candidates’ available usage evidence and passing context, then set the lineup before your league’s deadline.
NFL.com’s fantasy coverage index listed Juwan Johnson among Week 4 waiver-wire targets on September 28, 2026. That index entry establishes that he was mentioned in coverage, not that he is available in your league or a recommended replacement for every manager. Always check the player pool and current-week context yourself.
