If blue-screen errors keep restarting your PC before you can repair Windows, first note the stop code and any “What failed” module name. Then try basic hardware and driver troubleshooting; if Windows will not start, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), beginning with Startup Repair. When Windows can run, Microsoft’s system-file repair sequence is DISM followed by System File Checker (SFC). Back up important files before recovery options that may remove data.

What to do first when a blue screen interrupts repair

A blue screen, also called a stop-code error, can be caused by a hardware device, its driver, or software. Microsoft Support advises that “An unexpected restart might be caused by a hardware device, its driver, or software.” The displayed code can help narrow the investigation, but it does not prove a particular component is at fault.

  1. Record the stop code and module name. Photograph or write down the stop code, such as PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA or MEMORY_MANAGEMENT, and any “What failed” name shown. [Microsoft Support: troubleshoot blue-screen errors]
  2. Undo the latest hardware change. If the crashes began after adding a device, shut down and remove it, then try starting Windows again.
  3. Try Safe Mode if normal startup is unstable. If Safe Mode works, investigate recently changed drivers or software before attempting more disruptive recovery.
  4. Check Device Manager. Look for warning marks. Try updating the affected device’s driver; if that does not help, Microsoft recommends disabling or uninstalling the device.
  5. When Windows runs, check for updates and available disk space. Microsoft’s suggested free-space amount depends on system configuration, so there is no single threshold that applies to every PC.

How to open Windows Recovery Environment when Windows will not start

Windows Recovery Environment is a built-in set of tools for startup and recovery problems. Repeated startup failures may take the PC into WinRE automatically. If it does not appear and you have no recovery drive, create Windows installation media on another working PC, boot the affected PC from it, and choose Repair my PC on the setup screen. The key or menu used to boot from USB varies by manufacturer and firmware configuration.

Choose the recovery tool that matches the failure

  • Startup Repair: Start here when Windows cannot boot. It is designed to diagnose and address problems preventing startup.
  • Uninstall Updates: Consider this if the issue began after a recent Windows update and the option is available.
  • System Restore: Use a suitable restore point if one exists and the problem followed a system change.
  • Reset this PC or reinstall Windows: These are more disruptive choices. Read the displayed retention options carefully; what you can keep depends on the route and setup choices.

Do not keep repeating a repair command that cannot run because Windows will not boot. Use WinRE’s startup options first, then move to recovery media or installation media if Startup Repair or System Restore is unavailable or does not resolve the startup problem.

How to repair corrupt Windows system files when Windows runs

If Windows can stay running long enough to open an elevated Command Prompt, Microsoft instructs users to run DISM before SFC. Search for Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and run these commands in order, waiting for the first to finish before starting the second:

sfc /scannow

DISM supplies files needed to repair the Windows image and ordinarily uses Windows Update as its repair source. If the Windows Update client is broken, Microsoft documents using a running Windows installation or a side-by-side Windows folder on network or removable media as an alternate source. SFC scans protected system files and replaces corrupted files using a cached copy. See Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions.

These commands target system-file corruption; they do not establish that corrupted files caused every blue screen, nor guarantee that every stop-code crash will be fixed by running them.

Which Windows recovery option should you choose?

Choose based on whether Windows starts, whether you have a restore point or recovery media, and how much change you can tolerate. Back up important files before proceeding whenever possible: some recovery paths can cause data loss.

Option When it fits Data and disruption
Startup Repair Windows cannot start Targets startup problems; review any prompts shown.
Uninstall an update The startup issue followed a recent update and the option is available Removes the selected update; effects depend on the update and system.
System Restore A suitable restore point exists and the problem followed a system change Restores system state to a prior point; review the confirmation screen.
Reset this PC Less disruptive recovery has not worked or is unsuitable Retention depends on the option selected; read the screen before confirming.
Reinstall Windows Recovery options fail or are unavailable Installation choices vary; a clean installation removes data on the selected drive.

Microsoft distinguishes restore, reset, and reinstall options in its recovery guidance. Installation media may offer choices about what to keep depending on how Setup is started, so verify the actual screen-level choice rather than assuming files or apps will be retained. Manufacturer recovery media may provide better hardware compatibility because it can include device-specific drivers and factory applications.

Using a USB drive for recovery or installation media

If the affected PC cannot start and you have no recovery or installation media, Microsoft says installation media can be created on another working PC using a USB drive of at least 8 GB. The drive is a way to reach recovery or reinstall tools, not a fix for the cause of a BSOD. Follow Microsoft’s current Windows 11 installation-media instructions or the relevant Windows download page for your version.

A recovery drive is a separate tool created from a working Windows PC. Creating one erases the USB drive, and Microsoft says it is not a substitute for separately backing up personal files. Use an empty drive or back up its contents first. See Microsoft’s recovery-drive instructions.
