When PrusaSlicer or Cura refuses to slice an STL, the slicer is usually exposing a broken mesh rather than a bad slicing setting. Open holes, internal shells, non-manifold edges or vertices, duplicate faces, degenerate triangles, intersecting surfaces and inconsistent normals can all make a model non-solid. MeshLab’s cleaning, topology and hole-closing filters can correct many of these defects while letting you inspect each change.
Why a slicer rejects an STL
An STL describes triangles, not a guaranteed solid. For reliable slicing, those triangles must form one logically closed surface with consistent inside and outside directions. Prusa Research states that “the model to be printed must be solid or have ‘manifold geometry’.” It also warns that holes in the surface or internal geometry can prevent slicing.
- Open holes: missing triangles leave the volume unclosed.
- Non-manifold edges: an edge belongs to more than two surfaces, or has an ambiguous connection.
- Non-manifold vertices: separate shells touch at a vertex in a way that does not define a valid volume.
- Internal shells: trapped surfaces or duplicate bodies confuse the solid’s inside and outside.
- Duplicate or unreferenced data: repeated faces and vertices can create conflicting topology.
- Degenerate triangles: zero-area or collapsed triangles provide no usable surface.
- Intersecting faces and flipped normals: surfaces cross one another or point in inconsistent directions.
Typical symptoms include missing faces in Cura, unexpected holes or infill, a model that appears transparent, or a PrusaSlicer warning that the object cannot be sliced.
Prepare a safe MeshLab repair
- Keep the original STL unchanged. Make a working copy because deleting triangles, splitting vertices or filling holes can alter the intended shape.
- Open the copy in MeshLab and frame the entire object. Rotate around it and zoom into thin walls, joints, bores and sharp transitions.
- Look for visible gaps, floating shells, stray triangles, duplicated surfaces, flipped regions and parts that should not be present.
Do not automatically close every opening. A drain hole, socket, ventilation path or designed cavity is intentional geometry and should remain open.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Clean duplicate and invalid elements
Open Filters > Cleaning and Repairing. Filter names can vary slightly by MeshLab build, but the operations are available in current installations.
- Run Remove Duplicated Vertices.
- Run Remove Duplicated Faces.
- Remove unreferenced vertices if that filter is available.
- Remove degenerated or zero-area faces when the inspection shows them.
- Inspect the result before continuing; cleanup can expose a hole where duplicate geometry had been hiding the defect.
Save intermediate work under a new filename rather than overwriting the source. If a cleanup step removes a legitimate thin feature, reopen the original copy and use a narrower repair sequence.

Repair non-manifold edges and vertices
Non-manifold topology is a common reason a model looks normal in a viewer but fails in a slicer. In MeshLab, use the non-manifold-edge repair filter to identify and correct edges connected to an invalid number of faces. Then run the corresponding repair or split operation for non-manifold vertices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen inspection identifies a clearly unwanted triangle, shell or vertex cluster, select that region and delete it. Tom’s Hardware’s MeshLab procedure documents both non-manifold-edge and non-manifold-vertex operations and recommends deleting selected unwanted geometry after visual inspection. Avoid deleting a region merely because it is flagged: a support interface or intentional intersection may require a different modeling fix.

Close genuine holes and make the mesh watertight
Use MeshLab’s small-hole closing filter only after deciding that each opening is accidental. The filter can fill boundary loops and produce a watertight surface, but it cannot know whether an opening is part of the design.
- Fill a missing patch on an exterior wall when the surrounding surface clearly indicates the intended boundary.
- Leave functional openings, channels and cavities open.
- After filling, inspect the new triangles for excessive stretching or a visibly distorted surface.
If the hole is large, the boundary is tangled, or the fill creates a visibly wrong shape, rebuild that region in CAD or another modeling tool instead of forcing an automatic patch.

Export and verify in both slicers
- Export the repaired object as a new STL filename.
- Import that file into PrusaSlicer and Cura rather than replacing the original project asset.
- Confirm that the complete object is present, correctly oriented and at the expected scale.
- Open the layer preview and scrub through the entire model. Check for missing layers, unexplained voids, detached islands and infill appearing outside the walls.
- Use the same printer profile and material settings you normally use; a successful slice does not validate unsuitable print settings.
A file that slices in one application but not the other still deserves investigation. Compare the previews and return to MeshLab if either slicer shows missing regions or unexpected internal geometry.
MeshLab versus slicer and online repair
| Approach | Defect coverage | Control and review | Automation | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MeshLab | Duplicate data, degenerate faces, non-manifold edges and vertices, small holes and some intersections | Each filter can be inspected and applied selectively | Manual, targeted workflow | When preserving and reviewing geometry matters |
| PrusaSlicer or Cura repair | Basic automatic manifold correction; results depend on the model | Less visibility into individual topology changes | Fast and convenient | Quick first attempt on a mostly sound model |
| Dedicated repair service or specialist tool | May handle heavily corrupted meshes and difficult self-intersections | Often fewer controls over the exact patch | Highly automated | When MeshLab cannot produce a trustworthy solid |
PrusaSlicer documents a --repair command-line option for non-manifold meshes and, on supported Windows setups, a repair path through Netfabb. Its documentation also cautions that automatic repair is only partial and that some corrupted models need a dedicated service. Cura documentation similarly warns that open holes can produce bad G-code and recommends repairing through MeshLab or CAD rather than relying solely on slicer-side manifold fixes.

When MeshLab is not enough
- Self-intersections remain: rebuild the affected feature in CAD or use a dedicated repair tool.
- Automatic cleanup removes important geometry: return to the untouched STL and repair only the identified region.
- The model contains many disconnected shells: decide which shells are intended solids and remove the rest before exporting.
- Both slicers still disagree: inspect layer previews, verify scale and orientation, and test a newly exported STL rather than the original project mesh.
The goal is not simply to make a warning disappear. The repaired STL should represent the intended, closed volume and produce consistent layers in every slicer you plan to use.
