Use a different fix for each type of damage. Remove surface pills with your fingers, a soft brush, or a pill shaver; do not cut a pulled loop. Stabilize a small hole or tear with clothing or outdoor-gear repair tape, following the tape maker’s instructions. If the fleece is threadbare, heavily damaged, or the repair affects a critical seam, ask the manufacturer or a clothing-repair professional instead.
A pill is a ball of fibers tangled on the surface. A snag is an intact loop or strand pulled out of position. A tear is an actual break in the fabric. Identifying which one you have prevents a cosmetic problem from becoming a hole.
Identify the damage before touching the jacket
Fleece problems can look similar at first glance, but the wrong tool can make them worse. Inspect the garment under bright light and gently spread the fabric without stretching it hard.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| What you see | What it is | Best first response | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small fuzzy balls or matted tufts sitting on an otherwise intact surface | Pilling | Lift or brush away the pills, or use a pill shaver carefully | Pulling deeply into the fleece or shaving a loose, damaged area |
| A loop or single strand pulled above the surrounding surface, with the fabric still intact | Snag | Stop pulling it, protect it from further abrasion, and seek maker or professional advice if prominent | Cutting the loop; that can open a hole |
| A slit, puncture, opening, or separated edge through the fabric | Small hole or tear | Use clothing or outdoor-gear repair tape if appropriate, or request a professional repair | Applying random household tape, stretching the opening, or assuming every fleece backing will accept adhesive |
Also check whether the damage is at a zipper, pocket, cuff, shoulder seam, or another high-stress area. A surface pill is usually cosmetic. Damage at a seam or load-bearing point deserves more caution because movement and washing can enlarge it.

Prepare the fleece for any repair
Empty the pockets and close zippers and hook-and-loop fasteners so they cannot catch the fabric while you work. Read the garment care label before washing, drying, applying adhesive, or using heat. If the jacket is wet, dirty, oily, or covered in loose lint, stop and follow the care label to clean and dry it first; adhesive and shaving tools are easier to control on a clean, dry surface.
- Work on a flat table with bright, even lighting.
- Support the fabric from underneath instead of pulling the damaged area tight.
- Keep scissors, blades, and powered tools away from intact loops and seams unless the tool instructions specifically call for their use.
- Photograph a significant defect before attempting a repair if you may submit the garment to the manufacturer.
- For an expensive, technical, lined, or waterproof fleece, check the maker’s repair policy before altering it yourself.
How do I get pills off a fleece jacket?
Pilling is chiefly caused by abrasion. REI describes abrasion as “almost always the cause of pilling,” including rubbing against the jacket itself, backpack waistbelts, and hook-and-loop closures. Soft, fuzzy fleece can pill even when it is cared for well, so prevention lowers the risk but cannot guarantee a pill-free surface.
Method 1: Pick or brush away loose pills
- Lay the jacket flat and identify only the raised pills, not the surrounding pile.
- Use your fingertips or a soft clothes brush to lift the loose balls away from the surface.
- Work in small sections and use light strokes. Stop if fibers begin to pull out of the fabric rather than releasing cleanly.
- Shake or lint-roll the jacket after the loose material is removed, then inspect it again in good light.
This is the lowest-risk approach for a small area because you can feel whether a fiber is attached. Do not yank at a pill that is anchored in the fleece; cutting or brushing too aggressively can create a thin spot.
Method 2: Use a pill shaver
A pill shaver is appropriate when pills cover a larger, intact area. It improves appearance by trimming protruding fibers; it does not restore the fleece to its original, unused condition.

- Place the jacket on a clean, flat surface and make the section you are treating reasonably taut without stretching it.
- Set the shaver according to its own instructions and test it on a hidden or less visible area first.
- Move the tool lightly over the surface rather than pressing down. Keep it away from zippers, drawcords, seams, labels, and loose loops.
- Stop immediately if the surface begins to catch, snag, or sound as though the tool is cutting into the fabric.
- Empty the shaver and inspect the nap from several directions. A second light pass is safer than one forceful pass.
Never shave a section that is already threadbare, torn, or carrying a pulled loop. Treat that area as structural damage and choose the appropriate repair path instead.
Reduce the friction that creates new pills
Look for repeated contact rather than blaming the fleece alone. A backpack waistbelt, sternum strap, seat belt, rough desk edge, or hook-and-loop closure can rub the same patch on every outing. Where practical, adjust the contact point, cover the rough fastener when it is not in use, or change the way the jacket and pack sit.
Follow the jacket’s care label for washing and drying. The label is the authority for that garment’s temperature, cycle, detergent, and drying limits. Avoid treating a successful pill removal as permission to use a hotter dryer or harsher wash; those changes can increase abrasion and shrinkage.

How do I fix a snag in a fleece jacket?
A snag is a pulled loop or strand, not a pill. The loop may still be part of the fabric structure, so cutting it can convert a manageable cosmetic defect into a hole. The reviewed manufacturer and retailer guidance does not establish one universal, fleece-specific technique for returning a pulled loop to place.

Safe handling while you decide
- Stop pulling, picking, brushing, or shaving the raised loop.
- Keep the snag from catching on bags, jewelry, zippers, or hook-and-loop closures.
- Lay the garment flat and examine whether the surrounding fabric is intact or already split.
- If the loop is prominent, near a seam, or connected to a tear, contact the garment maker or a clothing-repair professional before trimming anything.
Do not hide a snag by cutting it flush. A short-looking thread can still be tensioned through several neighboring stitches or fleece fibers. Without a construction-specific method from the maker, the conservative choice is to leave the loop intact and prevent further pulling.
When a loose seam is the real problem
Sometimes what looks like a snag is a seam thread coming loose. A basic sewing kit may be useful for a loose seam, but fleece-specific sewing instructions were not established for this guidance. If the seam carries pocket, zipper, hood, or shoulder stress, use the manufacturer’s repair route or a professional rather than improvising a stitch that could pucker the fabric or miss an internal layer.
Can I fix a small hole in fleece?
For a small hole or tear, gear repair tape is the most directly supported do-it-yourself option. Patagonia’s repair FAQ says: “If you have a small hole or tear, a patch of Tenacious Tape is usually all you need.” Treat that as guidance to use a tape made for clothing or outdoor gear, not as a promise that every tape works on every fleece.
Choose the tape and confirm the limits
- Select repair tape intended for clothing or outdoor equipment. Ordinary office, packing, or household tape may leave residue, peel, or fail when the jacket flexes.
- Read the garment care label and the tape manufacturer’s application instructions before applying anything.
- Check whether the fleece has a smooth backing, membrane, coating, lining, or brushed face. Adhesive compatibility can vary by surface.
- Expect the patch to remain visible. A tape repair can stabilize a hole without matching the color, texture, or stretch of the surrounding fleece.
- Do not assume a patch is invisible, permanent, waterproof, or suitable for a large opening unless the tape maker specifically states that for your material and use.
Apply a tape patch
- Clean and dry the area using the garment and tape instructions. Do not apply adhesive over dirt, body oil, loose fibers, or moisture.
- Arrange the fabric in its natural position. Do not stretch the fleece to close the opening unless the tape instructions explicitly require a particular positioning method.
- Prepare the tape in the size and shape specified by its instructions. Keep the adhesive from touching lint, your fingers, or nearby fabric that should remain unpatched.
- Place the patch over the hole or tear exactly as directed, pressing from the center toward the edges if the instructions call for that motion.
- Apply the specified pressure and allow the stated set or cure time. Do not wash, tumble-dry, iron, or expose the jacket to unusual heat before the tape instructions permit it.
- Inspect the edges after the patch has set. If an edge lifts, stop using the garment in situations that could catch it and consult the tape maker or a repair professional rather than layering random tape over it.
A patch is most useful when the surrounding fabric still has strength. If the fleece around the opening is thin, frayed, or continuing to split, adhesive alone may not hold for long and a professional repair is the safer choice.

Situations that should bypass a home patch
- The opening is large, irregular, or growing while the jacket moves.
- The damage reaches a zipper, pocket attachment, cuff, hood, or major seam.
- The fabric is threadbare over a broad area rather than damaged at one point.
- The jacket has a specialized lining, membrane, or coating that the tape instructions do not cover.
- You need the repair to be cosmetically inconspicuous for work, uniform, or resale.
Should I use the manufacturer’s repair service?
Manufacturer repair is worth considering when appearance, construction, or future durability matters more than speed. Eligibility is not automatic. Patagonia’s Canada repair FAQ lists pilled fleece, threadbare items, and numerous holes among examples it may not repair, so a request can be declined even when the garment is from that company.
Terms also vary by country and change over time. Patagonia’s current United States repair page states that mail-in repair takes up to 10 weeks on average and lists $15 round-trip shipping. Those figures apply to that US service page, not to every location, item, or repair type; verify the current terms before sending a jacket.
- Photograph the damage and record the garment model or style information.
- Read the repair eligibility and shipping instructions for your country.
- Describe whether the issue is pilling, a pulled loop, a tear, or a failing seam; do not call all three a “hole.”
- Ask whether applying tape, trimming a snag, or shaving the surface could affect eligibility before making a DIY alteration.
- Package the garment as instructed and keep the tracking information for a mail-in submission.
Choose the repair by damage, location, and appearance
| Situation | First choice | Why | Escalate when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scattered pills on intact fleece | Hand removal, soft brushing, or a pill shaver | Removes protruding fibers and improves appearance | The surface catches, becomes thin, or contains a snag or tear |
| One or more pulled loops | Leave intact and prevent further catching | No universal fleece-specific loop-repair procedure is established here; cutting can create a hole | The loop is prominent, tensioned, near a seam, or attached to damaged fabric |
| Small hole or short tear in sound fabric | Clothing or outdoor-gear repair tape | Manufacturer guidance identifies a tape patch as a usual solution for a small hole or tear | The opening grows, the area is threadbare, or the tape surface is incompatible |
| Damage at a zipper, pocket, cuff, hood, or major seam | Manufacturer or professional repair assessment | These areas carry construction and movement stresses a simple cosmetic fix may not address | Always, if the repair affects fit, safety, or a technical lining |
| Heavy pilling, broad thin spots, or numerous holes | Ask the manufacturer whether it accepts the item | Repair services may exclude pilled fleece, threadbare fabric, or numerous holes | Replace or retire the jacket if no durable repair is available |
Troubleshoot common repair mistakes
The pill shaver keeps catching
Stop instead of pressing harder. Check that the section is flat and reasonably taut, remove nearby loose loops from the tool’s path, and test a different intact area. If catching continues, use hand removal or leave the surface alone. A tool that catches is signaling that the fabric is not a safe shaving target.
The fleece looks thinner after shaving
Shaving removes protruding fibers, so repeated or forceful passes can change the surface. Stop further passes, compare the area with an untreated section, and focus future work only on clearly raised pills. If the fabric is genuinely threadbare, treat it as damage rather than continuing cosmetic trimming.

The snag became a hole
Do not keep pulling or trim more fibers. Keep the opening from spreading, photograph it, and choose clothing or outdoor-gear repair tape only if the surrounding fabric is sound and the tape instructions support that surface. Otherwise request a professional assessment.
The tape patch peels or collects lint
Peeling usually means the surface preparation, material compatibility, pressure, or curing conditions did not match the tape instructions. Do not add household tape over the edge. Stop exposing the jacket to abrasion and contact the tape maker or a repair professional for a compatible solution.
The repair is visible
Visibility is normal for many fleece patches. Tape is intended to stabilize a small opening, not to recreate the original nap or color. If an inconspicuous finish matters, ask the manufacturer or a tailor about options before applying adhesive.
Prevent new pilling, snags, and tears
- Inspect backpack waistbelts and straps for rough edges and watch where they contact the fleece.
- Close hook-and-loop fasteners before storing or washing the jacket.
- Keep zippers, jewelry, and sharp equipment away from the fleece surface.
- Use the care label’s wash and dry settings rather than increasing heat or agitation.
- Check high-rub zones periodically so a small snag or thin spot is handled before it becomes a tear.
- Store the jacket where it will not be compressed against abrasive hardware or sharp objects.
These steps reduce recurring abrasion and catching; they cannot guarantee that a soft fleece will never pill or that an accident will not cause a tear. The practical goal is to preserve the fabric’s strength and deal with defects while they are still small.
