Use mysqlcheck to check and repair MySQL tables; mysqladmin cannot repair table data or indexes. Check the table first, save a backup, confirm its storage engine, and choose an engine-appropriate recovery method. MyISAM, ARCHIVE, and CSV tables can use mysqlcheck --repair or REPAIR TABLE. InnoDB tables require a rebuild or dump-and-reload instead.
mysqladmin and mysqlcheck do different jobs
The similar names cause much of the confusion. mysqladmin is a server-administration client. It can test whether the server is reachable, show server counters, list active threads, and coordinate operations such as flushing tables. It has no table-repair operation.

Therefore, a command such as mysqladmin repair is not a valid solution. Use mysqladmin to understand server conditions, then use mysqlcheck or SQL maintenance statements for the table itself.

Prepare safely before touching a damaged table
Repair is a write operation, not a harmless diagnostic. The MySQL manual recommends making a backup first because a repair can lose data under some conditions. A logical dump is a practical safeguard:
mysqldump db_name table_name > table.sqlThe dump should be usable before you proceed; in production operations, test restoring it separately rather than assuming that a file was created correctly. Keep the original backup even after a repair appears successful.
Confirm the server and client
Make sure you are connecting to the intended server and that the client tools are compatible with it. Check the client version with:
mysqlcheck --version
mysqladmin --versionUse the same host, port, account, and authentication settings you use for normal administration. Add options such as -h HOST or -P PORT when the server is not local.
Confirm the table’s storage engine
Run:
SHOW CREATE TABLE table_name;Inspect the resulting ENGINE clause. Do not choose a repair command until you know whether the table is MyISAM, ARCHIVE, CSV, InnoDB, or another engine. The engine determines whether a repair operation is supported.

Plan for locking and duration
Table maintenance can lock the table and block applications that need it. A single-table check is easier to schedule than an all-database operation. For large databases, estimate the impact, notify users, and run the command during a maintenance window. Do not assume that --quick makes a whole-database job instantaneous; it changes repair depth, not the number of tables selected.

The default mysqlcheck operation is a check. Start with the smallest useful scope:
mysqlcheck -u USER -p DATABASE TABLEYou will be prompted for the password. Supplying the password interactively avoids putting it in the shell command history. Replace the uppercase names with the account, database, and table you actually need.
Check several databases
To check every table in named databases, use:
mysqlcheck --check --databases db1 db2To check all databases, use:
mysqlcheck --check --all-databasesThe all-databases form excludes INFORMATION_SCHEMA and performance_schema unless you explicitly name them. A broad check is useful after an outage, but it increases runtime and the number of tables that may be locked or delayed.
Use SQL when you need a server-side statement
The equivalent single-table diagnostic is:
CHECK TABLE table_name;This is useful from a SQL session or an application maintenance script. It does not repair anything; it reports the table’s condition.

Read every result column
CHECK TABLE reports fields such as status, error, info, note, and warning. A final row with status set to OK normally means that no fault was found by that check. A warning, note, or error deserves attention even when another row looks normal. Save the complete output, including the table name and message, before changing anything; it gives you a baseline for post-repair verification.
Use mysqladmin for diagnosis and coordination
Although it cannot repair a table, mysqladmin can tell you whether the server is healthy enough to investigate and whether another operation is already running.
Test availability
mysqladmin -u USER -p pingA successful response confirms that the server is accepting connections. A failure points to availability, networking, authentication, or startup problems rather than proof of table corruption.
Capture a status snapshot
mysqladmin -u USER -p statusThe status display includes uptime, threads, questions, slow queries, opens, flush tables, and open tables. Record it when a check is unexpectedly slow or the server is under load; those counters provide context for scheduling maintenance.

mysqladmin -u USER -p processlistThis lists active threads. Use it to see whether a long-running query, backup, or other maintenance job is competing with your check. Coordinate with the responsible operator before stopping anything.

Flush tables only when you understand the effect
mysqladmin -u USER -p flush-tablesThis flushes all tables. It can be useful as part of maintenance coordination, but it is not a repair and it does not rebuild a damaged index. Flushing can also disrupt concurrent activity, so run it only when your operational plan calls for it.
Repair MyISAM, ARCHIVE, and CSV tables
The repair method applies to MyISAM, ARCHIVE, and CSV tables. For one table, run:
mysqlcheck --repair -u USER -p DATABASE TABLEThe SQL form is:
REPAIR TABLE table_name;Use the database-qualified command when you want every table in one database:

mysqlcheck --repair -u USER -p --databases db_nameFor all databases in scope, use:
mysqlcheck --repair -u USER -p --all-databasesRun a check again after the repair and compare the result with the original output. A successful command exit alone is not enough; the table should report a clean status in the follow-up check, and the application should be tested against the repaired data.
Choose the repair depth deliberately
- Quick repair:
mysqlcheck --quick --repair -u USER -p DATABASE TABLEtakes the fastest repair path and attempts to repair only the index tree. It is appropriate when the evidence points to index damage and time is limited, but it is not a substitute for a full investigation. - Extended repair:
mysqlcheck --extended --repair -u USER -p DATABASE TABLEperforms a more thorough operation. It can take a long time and may produce garbage rows during repair, so preserve the backup and inspect the resulting data carefully. - Automatic repair after checking:
mysqlcheck --auto-repair -u USER -p DATABASE TABLEchecks first and repairs tables that are found to be corrupted. This is convenient for a controlled batch, but it can modify several tables without a separate approval step; use it only when that behavior is acceptable.
Do not combine a broad scope with the deepest mode casually. An extended, all-databases repair can hold locks and consume substantial time, while an automatic repair can change every table that the check flags.

Handle InnoDB tables with a different recovery path
REPAIR TABLE does not repair InnoDB. Running the command against an InnoDB table is the wrong recovery method, even if the table appears in a check report. Confirm the engine with SHOW CREATE TABLE, then choose a documented rebuild or a logical restore.
Rebuild the table in place
After confirming the engine and ensuring that you have a current backup, a rebuild can be requested with:
ALTER TABLE table_name ENGINE = InnoDB;This recreates the table and its indexes through the InnoDB engine. It is a table-changing operation: it may require significant disk space, take considerable time, and block or otherwise affect access depending on the server version and operation details. Schedule it with the same care as any other structural change, then run a check and application-level validation.
Dump and reload when versions are involved
If the problem is tied to an incompatible server-version upgrade or downgrade, use the backup as the recovery source: export the table, create a clean destination under the target server, and reload the dump. A dump-and-reload path is slower than an in-place rebuild, but it avoids treating REPAIR TABLE as an InnoDB solution when the underlying issue is format or version compatibility.
What to do when a check reports corruption
The table is a supported repair engine
- Save the check output and make the logical dump.
- Confirm that the table is MyISAM, ARCHIVE, or CSV.
- Choose a single-table repair first, rather than repairing an entire database by default.
- Use standard repair unless you have a reason to select
--quick,--extended, or--auto-repair. - Run
CHECK TABLEormysqlcheck --checkagain and inspect all result fields. - Test representative reads and writes from the application and retain the pre-repair dump.
The table is InnoDB
Do not retry REPAIR TABLE. Confirm the engine again, review the check output, and use the rebuild or dump-and-reload path. If the rebuild fails, preserve the original backup and involve the person responsible for the server version and storage environment before attempting additional writes.
The check says OK but the application still fails
An OK result means that this check did not find a table fault; it does not prove that every application problem is fixed. Keep the output, inspect the active process list and server status, and identify whether the failure is a connection, query, permission, or application issue. Avoid repeatedly repairing a table that already passes its check, because each repair is a write operation with its own risk.

The repair fails or produces unexpected rows
Stop treating the live table as the only copy. The extended mode can produce garbage rows during repair, and any repair can lose data in some circumstances. Compare the repaired table with the saved dump, preserve logs and command output, and restore into a separate test location first so that you can verify what data is recoverable before replacing the production copy.

A conservative decision sequence
- Is the server reachable? Use
mysqladmin ping. Resolve connection or authentication problems before interpreting table symptoms. - Which table and engine are involved? Use
SHOW CREATE TABLE table_name;and record the complete definition. - Do you have a restorable copy? Create
mysqldump db_name table_name > table.sqland verify the backup independently. - What does a check report? Run the narrowest useful
mysqlcheckorCHECK TABLEcommand and save every status, error, note, and warning. - Is repair supported? Use
--repaironly for MyISAM, ARCHIVE, or CSV. For InnoDB, select a rebuild or dump-and-reload. - Can the operation run safely now? Check
mysqladmin processlist, account for locks and duration, and schedule a maintenance window when necessary. - Did the result improve? Recheck the table, validate application behavior, and retain the original dump and command output.
This sequence keeps diagnosis separate from modification, limits the scope of a potentially destructive action, and prevents a server-administration command from being mistaken for a table-repair tool.
