For a small tear, keep the down inside, clean and dry the shell, then cover the damage with a compatible self-adhesive fabric patch. Press the patch from the center outward and let its adhesive set before washing. If a feather is protruding but the shell has no visible hole, do not pull it out; gently draw it back inside. Larger tears, worn fabric or damaged baffles need the jacket maker or an experienced outdoor-gear repairer.
First identify what is actually damaged
A feather is sticking through intact fabric
A single feather can work through a pin-sized opening that is difficult to see, or it can emerge between yarns without a clear tear. Pulling it out can enlarge the opening and remove insulation that is still attached to the jacket. Instead, grasp the fabric around the feather and gently draw the feather back into the baffle from the opposite side. Rab advises rubbing a pin-prick area with damp fingers; Patagonia also describes rubbing or gentle warmth to help close a tiny opening. Use only light pressure, avoid excessive heat, and stop if the shell begins to distort.
There is a visible cut, split or hole
Treat this as a fabric repair, not a feather-removal job. Do not pull attached feathers through the opening. If loose down has escaped and can be returned without force, guide it back into the jacket’s baffle. The aim is to close the shell while preserving the down distribution inside the chamber.

A surface patch is intended for a small tear with sound fabric around it. Fabric that is frayed, thinning, stretched or torn along a seam may not hold adhesive reliably. A cut that crosses a baffle, damages stitching or allows down to move between chambers requires construction work rather than a simple patch. Send that damage to the manufacturer or a specialist repairer.

What you need before starting
| Item | Purpose and cautions |
|---|---|
| Self-adhesive fabric repair patch or repair tape | Choose a product intended for lightweight synthetic shells and check its material-compatibility instructions. Gear Aid’s Tenacious Tape Mini Repair Patches are one example described for small tears and puffer-jacket holes; availability and formulations can change. |
| Clean, dry work surface | Moisture, oil and dirt reduce adhesion. Follow the jacket’s care label and the patch maker’s cleaning directions. |
| Sharp scissors | Useful for cutting a smooth circle or rounded rectangle. Rounded edges are less likely to catch on clothing or lift. |
| Soft cloth | For cleaning when the garment and patch instructions permit it. |
| Isopropyl alcohol or water | Use only the cleaner specified for your shell. Patagonia describes isopropyl alcohol for its method, while Norrøna describes a damp-cloth clean followed by complete drying; these instructions are not universal. |
| Plastic card or spudger | Optional. It can help smooth a patch without touching adhesive with your fingers. |
Do not substitute household tape, duct tape or an unknown adhesive unless the garment and product instructions explicitly approve it. A glue that attacks the coating, leaves a hard spot or cannot tolerate laundering can create a larger problem than the original tear.
How to patch a small tear
1. Inspect and stabilize the jacket
- Lay the jacket flat under bright light. Identify the complete length of the tear, including any fine split at either end.
- Check the reverse side of the shell if accessible. Confirm that the damage is limited to the outer fabric and that no seam or baffle stitching has failed.
- Gently move loose down back into the baffle. Do not tug on feathers still attached to the fabric, and do not push hard enough to create a second opening.
- Keep the jacket still while you prepare the patch. Handling the garment repeatedly can work more down through the damaged area.
2. Clean and dry the repair area
Dust, skin oil and moisture interfere with pressure-sensitive adhesives. Clean only as the shell and patch instructions allow. Patagonia’s method calls for isopropyl alcohol; Norrøna’s guidance uses a damp cloth and then complete drying. Because waterproof coatings and finishes differ, do not assume one cleaner is safe for every jacket. Let the area dry completely before exposing adhesive.
3. Choose the overlap and cut the patch
The patch must cover the entire tear and make firm contact with intact fabric on every side. Published guidance differs: Patagonia specifies at least 1/4 inch of overlap beyond the damaged area on each side, while Norrøna specifies at least 25 mm (1 inch) on all sides. These are not a single universal measurement. Use the garment or patch maker’s instruction for your specific product; where no instruction resolves the difference, the larger sound-fabric margin gives the adhesive more contact area, provided the patch will lie flat.
Cut a circle or a rectangle with rounded corners. Sharp corners are easier to catch on pack straps and clothing, which can start a lift at the edge. Make the patch large enough to cover fraying, not merely the largest visible slit. Do not make it so large that it must cross a seam, pocket edge, drawcord channel or sharply curved section of the jacket.

4. Position before removing the backing
Place the unpeeled patch over the tear and check its alignment. The damaged area should be centered, with the planned overlap visible all around. Once the backing is removed, repositioning can contaminate the adhesive or create wrinkles. If the tear sits on a highly curved panel, choose a shape that can lie flat without folds; a smaller, properly placed patch is better than a large patch that bridges a ridge.
5. Apply from the middle outward
- Peel back enough release paper to expose one portion of adhesive while keeping the rest protected.
- Set the exposed portion over the center of the tear, taking care not to trap down under the adhesive edge.
- Press the patch outward from the center toward the perimeter. Use a clean fingertip or the smooth edge of a plastic card if the product permits it.
- Continue removing the backing and smoothing in overlapping strokes until the entire patch is down.
- Work around the edge with firm, even pressure. Look for bubbles, lifted corners or a wrinkle that leaves a channel to the tear.
Some products advise avoiding contact with the adhesive. Follow that warning rather than relying on a generic application technique. If a bubble remains, do not keep stretching the shell; lift and reposition only if the product instructions allow it, otherwise seek advice from the manufacturer.
6. Let the adhesive set
Do not immediately stuff, wear in rain or wash the jacket. Patagonia’s care guide, dated May 5, 2026, says to wait 24 hours before washing for the tape method it describes. That is a product-specific setting period, not a universal cure time. Use the longer or otherwise different time stated by your patch maker, and keep the jacket flat and at the instructed temperature while it sets.

After the setting period, inspect the entire perimeter in bright light. The edge should be fully bonded, with no corner lifting and no opening visible beneath it. Gently flex the panel once; do not peel at the patch. If down is still emerging, stop using the jacket until you determine whether the original tear extends beyond the patch or another opening is present.

How to stop a feather escaping when there is no obvious tear
Draw it back instead of pulling it out
Hold the feather shaft through the shell only long enough to guide it inward, then release the fabric. Rubbing the tiny area between damp fingers can help the weave close, according to Rab. Patagonia describes gentle rubbing or warmth for a very small opening. Use no more heat than the garment instructions permit; a hot iron, hair dryer or concentrated heat can melt or deform synthetic shell fibers and coatings.
When a feather-only fix is not enough
If the same spot produces more feathers, if you can see a slit, or if the opening widens when the jacket is flexed, switch to the patch procedure. Repeated leakage means the shell has a structural opening even if it is hard to see. A patch should cover the full damaged area rather than only the point where the latest feather appeared.
Patch-size decisions and conflicting measurements
| Guidance | What it says | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Patagonia Care & Repair Guides (May 5, 2026) | At least 1/4 inch of patch beyond the damage on each side. | Use this margin when following the tape method in that guide and its product directions. |
| Norrøna Help Center (September 4, 2025) | At least 25 mm (1 inch) on all sides. | Use this larger margin when following Norrøna’s stated method or when the patch instructions call for it. |
| General application principle | Every part of the tear must be covered by adhesive-backed patch on sound fabric. | Resolve any difference by following the specific garment and patch instructions. Never reduce coverage below the amount needed to reach intact fabric. |
The measurements describe overlap, not the total patch diameter. For example, a 5 mm slit needs a patch wider than the slit by the required margin on both sides. If fraying extends beyond the visible cut, measure to the frayed edge. A rounded patch can have the same effective coverage as a square one while presenting fewer snag points.
Heat, washing and routine care after repair
Heat is optional and product-sensitive
Some repair systems mention gentle warmth to improve bonding; others do not. Patagonia and Norrøna both make heat conditional on the product or garment instructions. Do not iron a down jacket simply because a patch is not sticking. If heat is allowed, protect the shell as directed, use the specified temperature and duration, and keep moving rather than concentrating heat in one spot. Stop immediately if the fabric shines, puckers, smells of melting plastic or changes texture.

Washing
Wait the stated adhesive-setting period before washing. For the Patagonia tape method, that period is 24 hours. Follow the jacket’s laundering instructions afterward; a patch does not override the care label. Avoid washing to test the repair before it has set, and inspect the patch after the first permitted wash for lifted edges.
Storage and handling
Keep the repaired panel from being abraded by backpack straps, rough walls and hook-and-loop fasteners. Do not store the jacket tightly compressed while the adhesive is setting. During later trips, carry a compatible patch in the repair kit so a new small tear can be covered before down escapes.

The patch will not stick at all
- Confirm that the shell is completely dry and free of cleaner residue, oil and dust.
- Check that the patch is intended for the shell’s fabric and finish. Adhesive designed for a different material may not bond.
- Look for a seam, coating ridge or curved fold under the patch. Move to a flatter area only if doing so still covers the damage.
- Press the complete perimeter again and allow the full product-specified setting time.
One corner is lifting
A sharp corner, insufficient overlap, trapped dirt or flexing before the adhesive set can start edge lift. Do not continue wearing the jacket in wet or abrasive conditions. If the product instructions permit trimming or replacing the patch, remove the lifted material without enlarging the tear, clean and dry the area again, and apply a new rounded patch with adequate sound-fabric contact. If removal risks pulling shell fibers, ask the manufacturer or a repairer rather than forcing it.

Stop pulling the feathers. Inspect beyond the patch perimeter for a second opening or a tear that extends under the patch. If the damage reaches a seam or the fabric is frayed, a larger surface patch may not solve the underlying problem; professional repair is safer.

The shell was damaged by heat or solvent
Stop applying heat or cleaner and let the garment cool and dry. Shiny, melted, stiff or discolored fabric indicates possible coating or fiber damage. Do not try to hide that damage under another patch without checking whether the surrounding fabric still provides a sound bond. Contact the jacket maker or a specialist service.
When to use a manufacturer or specialist repair service
Choose professional help when the tear is large, the surrounding fabric is thin or worn, a seam or baffle is involved, or the jacket has lost down from a chamber. Rab directs customers to its service centre for permanent repairs; Norrøna recommends its team for larger or worn areas; Patagonia describes store and mail-in support. Service eligibility, prices, turnaround times and partner arrangements depend on the jacket brand and country, so confirm current terms before shipping the garment.
What to tell the repairer
- Identify the shell material if you know it and describe whether the jacket is water-resistant or coated.
- Mark the complete damaged area, including places where feathers have emerged.
- Say whether the jacket has already been washed, exposed to heat or treated with adhesive.
- Explain whether down is missing, clumped or moving between baffles.
A specialist can replace or reinforce shell fabric, restore baffle stitching and redistribute or replace down. Those jobs cannot be reliably reproduced by layering adhesive over a structural failure.

Preventing another leak
- Keep the jacket away from sharp branches, exposed zippers, crampon points and rough hook-and-loop panels.
- Inspect high-friction zones such as shoulders, cuffs, pocket openings and areas under pack straps after each trip.
- Repair a pin-prick opening while it is still small; waiting allows movement and abrasion to enlarge it.
- Use the jacket’s care-label washing and drying procedure. Aggressive cleaning, unsuitable heat or over-compression can weaken fabrics and finishes.
- Store the jacket as the maker recommends rather than leaving it permanently crushed in a stuff sack.
A compact decision guide
| What you see | Best next action |
|---|---|
| One feather, no visible hole | Gently draw it back inside; try light rubbing with damp fingers if the shell instructions allow, and avoid pulling or excessive heat. |
| Small clean tear, strong fabric around it | Return loose down gently, clean and dry the area, then apply a compatible rounded adhesive patch with the required overlap. |
| Fraying, thin fabric or a tear near a seam | Do not rely on a small patch; ask the manufacturer or a specialist repairer. |
| Patch edge lifting or leakage continuing | Stop wearing the jacket in demanding conditions, inspect for damage beyond the patch and follow the product instructions or seek professional help. |
The practical rule is simple: contain the down first, use an adhesive patch only on sound shell fabric, and escalate any damage that involves construction rather than a single surface opening. Patagonia’s detailed method is available in its Care & Repair guide for fixing a small hole in a down jacket; apply its measurements and 24-hour washing interval only to the method and products it specifies.
