Organize SmartThings in three separate ways: use rooms to group devices by where they are, edit a device to change its room or mark it as a Favorite, and use Map View if you want a visual floor plan. A Favorite is not the same as a shortcut on your phone’s Home screen, and available move options depend on the device and connection type.
Change a device’s room or add it to Favorites
Samsung’s instructions for Galaxy phones and iPhones use the device card’s Edit menu to change supported device details. Menu wording and placement can vary by app version.
- Open SmartThings and select Devices.
- Tap the Home icon, choose the location, and find the device by browsing its rooms.
- Long-press the device card and select Edit.
- Change the Room field to assign the device to a different room. To make it a Favorite, turn on Set as favourite.
- Save your changes.
The editor may also include Device name, Location, Add to Home screen, and Remove device. Set as favourite adds the control to SmartThings’ Favorites area; Add to Home screen creates a separate phone shortcut. Samsung says Bluetooth device details cannot be edited through this documented flow. Samsung’s device-management instructions cover Galaxy and iPhone.

Add, rename, or remove a room
Rooms belong to a location, which is the larger container for connected hubs and devices. Samsung’s US instructions describe room management through the location manager:
#1 Best Overall
- Powered by SmartThings: Connect, monitor, and automate your home through the SmartThings app. Build a reliable, unified smart home using Samsung's proven ecosystem
- Matter + Zigbee Smart Home Hub: Supports the newest Matter standard plus Zigbee for lighting, sensors, plugs, switches, thermostats, and more - thousands of compatible devices. PLEASE NOTE: Z-Wave not supported
- Easy Setup with Wi-Fi or Ethernet: Get started in minutes using Wi-Fi or a wired Ethernet connection for apartments, houses, and expanding smart home systems - Z-Wave not supported
- Automations That Work for You: Create custom routines for security, lighting, comfort, and energy savings. Many local automations continue working even if your internet goes offline
- Wide Device Compatibility: Connect compatible smart devices from Aeotec and many other brands to build a unified system for lighting, voice control, energy management, and climate settings
- Open Home > Manage locations and choose the location you want to organize.
- Select Rooms.
- To add a room, tap the plus button, choose a room title, optionally select wallpaper, and save.
- To edit an existing room, open it in the Rooms manager and change its name or wallpaper, then save.
Deleting a room leaves its devices in the location; it does not delete them. Some built-in rooms, including Personal devices, cannot be deleted. Samsung says the first device added automatically creates a location called “Home” if one does not already exist. The location manager also includes settings for its name, geolocation, mode, wallpaper, rooms, and members. Avoid Remove location unless you intend to remove the location and its associated scenes, automations, services, and devices. See Samsung’s location and room management instructions.
Move devices to another room—and know the limits
For eligible devices, Samsung’s US guide provides a bulk move option within a location:
Rank #2
- Monitor and control compatible devices in your home using a single smartphone app for your phone
- Automate connected devices in your home and set them to turn on or off when doors are opened, people come and go, and much more
- Works with a wide range of smartphone compatible products
- Open the location’s room and tap More options (the three dots).
- Select Move devices to other room.
- Select one or more devices, choose the destination room, and tap Move.
Samsung states that this move procedure does not support cloud- or hub-connected devices or non-Samsung smart devices. Its separate device-edit instructions allow changing the Location and Room fields for supported devices, but exclude Bluetooth device details. That means there is no single documented relocation path that applies to every integration. The cited instructions do not establish that deleting and re-adding an ineligible device preserves its configuration, so do not assume it will. Consult Samsung’s move-device guidance and device-edit guidance for the relevant operation.

Use Map View as a visual layer
Map View is optional: it displays rooms and devices spatially rather than replacing the room structure. Samsung says you can create a map from a floor-plan photo, draw one freehand, or start with a preset arrangement of rooms and walls. You can add floors, walls, dividers, interior elements, and devices. Each map room corresponds to a room in SmartThings; placing a room on the map shows the devices assigned to that room in the app.

- Room: groups devices by their physical area.
- Favorite: collects commonly used controls for quick access in SmartThings, independently of room assignment.
- Phone Home-screen shortcut: a separate shortcut, not the same thing as a SmartThings Favorite.
- Map View: a visual representation of existing app rooms and their assigned devices.
Samsung’s room and location overview also covers Home-screen customization and hiding rooms, but does not provide a precise current sequence for reordering Favorites. The steps above follow official Samsung support pages accessed October 4, 2026; those pages did not expose publication dates.
