To export a browser-rendered mockup as an image, you can place its HTML inside an SVG <foreignObject>, load that SVG as an image, and draw it onto a canvas. Libraries such as dom-to-image automate much of that work. By contrast, html2canvas rebuilds a canvas representation from DOM and style information rather than capturing the browser’s final pixels. Neither route guarantees a perfect match: fonts, images, cross-origin rules, CSS support, and the target browser all matter.

Why “DOM-to-image” can mean two different rendering approaches

There is no general canvas operation that directly paints an arbitrary live HTML element into a 2D canvas. A browser-only export therefore needs an intermediate representation. Two common approaches do that differently: one reconstructs the page from DOM and styles; the other packages HTML into SVG and lets the browser render it as part of an image pipeline.

Question html2canvas (DOM reconstruction) dom-to-image pattern (SVG foreignObject)
How are pixels produced? Reads DOM elements and styles, then builds a canvas representation. Clones and serializes HTML inside SVG foreignObject; the SVG is loaded as an image and can then be drawn to canvas.
What most affects fidelity? Whether the library implements the CSS features used by the mockup. Whether the browser renders the embedded HTML and SVG as needed, and whether required resources are available to the pipeline.
What about external assets? Images can require same-origin access or a proxy; cross-origin iframe contents cannot be read by the library. The documented pipeline embeds fonts and image assets, but fetching resources and SVG image security restrictions still apply.
What can it produce? A promise resolving to a canvas, which can be encoded or used further. SVG or raster output; drawing the SVG image to canvas provides a route to PNG or other pixel-based use.

The html2canvas documentation explains that it builds an image from available DOM information rather than taking a literal screenshot. Its output may differ from the browser’s actual rendered page, and unsupported CSS properties will not render correctly. The dom-to-image README describes the other approach: using SVG’s foreignObject feature to contain arbitrary HTML. That distinction makes the latter a reasonable starting point when you want the browser to render the embedded markup, but it is not a promise of universal accuracy or compatibility.

How the SVG-to-canvas export works

The MDN guide to drawing DOM objects into canvas describes a sequence rather than a direct DOM-to-canvas call: create an SVG image with a foreignObject, put well-formed HTML inside it, load that SVG as an image, and draw the image to a canvas. The SVG is the bridge between HTML content and canvas pixels.

  1. Choose the region to export. Identify the mockup subtree and its dimensions. The exported markup must contain the content and layout you expect to see in the image.
  2. Prepare a self-contained copy. A library such as dom-to-image clones the target subtree, copies computed styles recursively, and recreates pseudo-elements, which ordinary cloning does not automatically preserve.
  3. Make required assets available. The documented pipeline finds web fonts and embeds them as data URLs; it also embeds image and CSS background-image assets. This preparation does not guarantee every remote resource can be fetched.
  4. Serialize the markup into SVG. The cloned, styled HTML is placed inside an SVG foreignObject. The markup needs to be well-formed for this use.
  5. Load the SVG and draw it to canvas. Once the SVG is available as an image, draw that image into a canvas at the desired output dimensions.
  6. Encode or use the result. Canvas output can be encoded as a data URL or blob, provided the canvas remains origin-clean.

The last condition matters: a cross-origin resource can make canvas pixels unreadable under browser security rules. Export failures may therefore come from asset access or origin restrictions, not from the SVG conversion itself.

What can make the exported mockup differ or fail

Computed styles and pseudo-elements

A cloned element is not automatically a complete copy of its appearance. The dom-to-image README documents recursively copying computed styles and rebuilding pseudo-elements such as ::before and ::after. If those details are missing, the export can differ from the live page even when the subtree itself was cloned.

Fonts, images, and CSS backgrounds

Fonts may not be ready or available when the image is created, and remote images or background images may be inaccessible to the export pipeline. dom-to-image documents embedding these resources, but embedding depends on being able to retrieve them. Check the exported image for missing glyphs, fallback fonts, and absent imagery rather than assuming the asset pass succeeded.

Cross-origin resources and canvas security

The html2canvas project documentation explains that external images may require a proxy or same-origin access, that cross-origin iframe contents cannot be read, and that tainted canvases cannot be read back normally. These constraints also matter when a workflow ultimately draws resources into canvas: do not treat browser-side export as a way around origin policy.

CSS support and browser differences

The html2canvas documentation lists evergreen Firefox, Chrome/Chromium, and Safari as supported, while noting that CSS properties must be implemented by the library to render correctly. The dom-to-image README includes project-specific browser notes, including IE and Safari limitations and historical version testing. Those notes describe that project, not every fork or every current browser. Test the actual mockup in the browser versions you plan to support.

Choosing a route for your mockup

  • Try the SVG foreignObject route when you want the browser to render embedded HTML and can meet the asset and origin requirements.
  • Consider DOM reconstruction when its supported CSS feature set suits the design or when that rendering model fits your use case better; verify any complex styling against actual output.
  • Use a server-side screenshot service instead if your requirement involves content that the browser-side page cannot access or capture under origin restrictions. A client-side library cannot read cross-origin iframe contents simply by serializing the surrounding DOM.

For either browser-only approach, make a small validation mockup that includes the real fonts, backgrounds, images, pseudo-elements, and CSS effects you rely on. Compare its export with the live page in each target browser; the mechanism alone does not establish visual fidelity.
