To rename a Pokémon in Pokémon GO, open its summary and tap the pen button beside its nickname. You can reach the summary from Main Menu > Pokémon in Map View.
Steps to change a Pokémon’s nickname
- From Map View, tap Main Menu.
- Tap Pokémon.
- Select the Pokémon you want to rename to open its summary.
- Tap the pen button beside its nickname, enter the new name, and confirm it in the app. Niantic identifies the pen button as the nickname editor in its Pokémon summary instructions.
Pokémon nicknames and Trainer nicknames are different
A Pokémon nickname applies to that individual Pokémon; by default, the nickname field uses the Pokémon’s species name. Your Trainer nickname is your account name, edited separately through Settings > Account. Niantic’s Trainer nickname instructions describe limited changes to that account nickname, not to individual Pokémon nicknames.

If the pen button is missing or the change does not save
Niantic’s Pokémon summary instructions identify the pen button but do not specify nickname character limits, allowed characters, a change-frequency limit, or steps for a missing button or failed save. Check that you have opened the selected Pokémon’s summary; if the control is still missing or the edit will not save, consult current in-app support rather than assuming a particular restriction.
