Removing personal information from an AI-generated answer requires more than deleting one search result. Start by correcting or deleting the original webpage, then submit separate removal or refresh requests to Google, Bing/Copilot and ChatGPT, and finally contact data brokers where your law provides a route. Each request changes what a service displays; only the source owner can remove the originating page.
What “removal” actually means
AI search answers are assembled from indexed webpages, cached copies, data-broker records and, in some systems, live search results. A response can therefore survive after you hide one listing. There are four distinct targets:
- The source website: the page that publishes your name, address, phone number, email address or other identifying information.
- A search index: a catalog used to produce conventional results and, in some cases, to ground an AI answer.
- An AI response: the text generated by a chatbot or search assistant when it repeats your information.
- A data broker: a company that compiles profiles and may supply information to other sites.
These layers are related but independent. Google can hide a qualifying result without deleting the page. Microsoft can refresh Bing and Copilot after a source is deleted or made non-indexable, but cannot erase the internet. OpenAI can prevent personal data from appearing in ChatGPT responses without changing the external page. Treating each layer separately prevents a result from returning through a different URL.

Use this order of operations
- Document every exposed page and AI response.
- Ask each source website to delete or correct the information.
- Submit Google removal requests and enroll in its monitoring tool where available.
- Fix or block Bing results and wait for recrawling so Copilot can update.
- Send a personal-data request to OpenAI for problematic ChatGPT responses.
- Request deletion or sale/share opt-out from data brokers, using California’s centralized process if you are eligible.
- Recheck alternate spellings, old addresses and newly indexed copies.
Do not send more identifying information than a service needs to match the record. Keep a private log of URLs, screenshots, dates, request IDs and the service that produced each result.

1. Inventory every place the information appears
Search broadly but systematically
Run searches for your full name with your city, employer, former employers, old addresses, telephone numbers and email addresses. Put exact phrases in quotation marks when useful. Search common misspellings, middle initials and versions with and without apartment numbers. Repeat the searches in the services where you saw the information, including standard search, AI answer panels and chatbot prompts.
Record evidence before requesting changes
For each exposure, save the exact page URL, a screenshot, the displayed text, the date and time, and whether the result came from a web page, an AI answer or a data-broker profile. Note whether the page is yours, belongs to an organization, or appears to be copied elsewhere. This record lets you distinguish a stale cache from a genuinely new source when you check again.
Protect yourself while collecting evidence
- Use only the minimum identifying details necessary in a request.
- Do not upload a complete identity document unless a service specifically requires verification and explains how it protects the copy.
- Redact unrelated account numbers, signatures and family members’ information from screenshots.
- Save confirmations and case numbers outside the page you are trying to remove.
2. Delete or correct the page at its source
Why the source owner comes first
The website operator controls the originating copy. Ask for deletion of the page, removal of the personal fields, or correction of inaccurate information. If the site has a profile, directory entry or cached version under the same account, request that each copy be removed. Include the exact URL and identify only the data at issue.
What to request
- Permanent deletion of the page or profile when it has no legitimate need to remain online.
- Correction of wrong names, addresses, phone numbers or employment details.
- Removal of internal search results, downloadable files and publicly accessible cached profile pages controlled by the same operator.
- A response confirming what was changed and when.
Keep the request and the page address even if the operator refuses. A refusal, a 404 response, a noindex directive or a corrected page gives search services different signals, so record which outcome occurred.
When the owner will not cooperate
Some pages are protected by public-record rules or a publisher’s public-interest rationale. In that situation, proceed with search-index and AI-service requests, but understand that suppression does not remove the source. If the page contains threats, intimate images, account credentials or doxxing, describe the specific harm and urgency in the service’s request form.

3. Request removal from Google Search
Use the result’s personal-information controls
- Search for your name and the exposed contact detail.
- Open the result’s More or About this result controls.
- Choose the option for removing personal information and select the reason that matches the exposure.
- Submit the exact URL, identify the personal data shown and complete any requested verification.
- Save the confirmation and monitor the request status.
Google’s “Results about you” feature can monitor matching contact details and notify you about new results. Where the tool is available for your account and region, enter the phone numbers, addresses and email addresses you want monitored, then review matches before requesting action.
Information that may qualify
Google says its removal tools can address phone numbers, home addresses, email addresses, government identifiers, financial-account details, private records, passwords and qualifying doxxing content. Approval is not automatic: Google evaluates the request and may ask for evidence that the information identifies you.
Understand Google’s limits
Google may deny a request when a page has strong public value, including some government, educational or newspaper pages. An approved request can be global or limited to searches that include your name, depending on the circumstances. Even when a URL disappears from Google, the source page remains available through its own address, another search engine or a link shared directly.
4. Refresh or remove Bing and Copilot results
Fix the source signal first
Microsoft says Bing and Copilot can update what they show when a page has been deleted, replaced or marked non-indexable. The site owner can remove the page, return a 404 response, or add a noindex directive. After making the change, the page must be crawled again before Bing’s index reflects it.
Use Bing’s content-removal process
- Submit the affected URL through Bing’s content-removal workflow.
- Explain whether the page was deleted, replaced, made non-indexable or contains personal information that requires temporary blocking.
- Provide the source URL and evidence of the current page state when requested.
- Ask the site owner to complete the permanent fix if the page is still live.
- Check again after recrawling and submit a refresh request if the old snippet remains.
A temporary block can hide a URL while the permanent source correction is completed. It is not the same as erasing the page, and it can expire or lose effect if the source continues to publish the information.

Why Copilot may still mention you
Copilot-linked results can rely on Bing’s index or on another discoverable copy. If the original page is gone but a duplicate, cached file or broker profile remains, record that new URL and address the duplicate separately. Bing cannot remove content from the internet itself; it can change what appears in Bing results and Copilot experiences after it detects a qualifying source change.

What the request can change
OpenAI’s right-to-be-forgotten and personal-data-removal process can address personal information appearing in ChatGPT responses under applicable privacy laws. An approved request affects how ChatGPT responds; it does not delete the external webpage, a search-engine listing or a data-broker record.
Prepare a complete, minimal request
- Provide the ChatGPT conversation or response that displayed the information.
- Identify the exact personal data that is inaccurate, sensitive or unwanted.
- List the relevant external URLs if the response cites or appears to draw from a page.
- State the legal or privacy basis for the request and explain the harm or risk.
- Complete any identity verification requested by OpenAI, sharing only what is necessary.
Save the submission and any decision. If the response changes but the cited page remains online, continue with the source-owner and search-engine steps rather than submitting the same issue repeatedly to ChatGPT.
6. Remove records from data brokers
California residents: use DROP when eligible
The California Privacy Protection Agency’s DROP platform lets eligible California residents send one deletion and sale/share opt-out request to registered data brokers. The system can match broker records and inferences that qualify as personal information. Verification is required, and legal exemptions can prevent deletion of particular records.
Everyone else: contact brokers individually
For other jurisdictions, locate each broker’s privacy, deletion or “Do not sell or share” channel. Follow its verification instructions, submit the minimum information needed to match your profile and retain the confirmation. Check local privacy law because eligibility, response duties and exemptions vary by location.

Expect reappearance from upstream sources
A broker can rebuild a profile from public records, another broker or a newly published page. If a removed record returns, compare the new URL and fields with your log. A new source requires source deletion; a broker copy requires another broker request; a stale search listing requires recrawling or index removal.

Troubleshoot the result that remains
The page was deleted, but Google still shows it
Confirm that the URL now returns a genuine not-found response or no longer contains the data. Submit Google’s removal request with the old result and the current page state. Search again after Google processes the request; a different URL may be a duplicate rather than a failure of the original request.
Bing still displays an old snippet
Check whether the source has actually been deleted or marked noindex. If it has, request a refresh and allow Bing to recrawl. If it has not, ask the site owner to make the permanent change; a temporary block alone does not fix the source.
ChatGPT gives the information after a page disappears
Submit the specific response to OpenAI and identify the personal data. Also search for alternate copies, because ChatGPT’s response issue and the external source are separate targets.
A broker listing returns after deletion
Determine whether the broker reacquired the information, another broker supplied it, or a new public page appeared. Use the appropriate deletion or opt-out channel again and address the upstream source.

The service asks for identity proof
Read the verification instructions and provide only the fields needed to establish that you are the person named. Redact unrelated information and keep a copy of what you submitted. If the requested proof appears excessive, ask the service what narrower evidence it accepts.
Timing, refusal and evidence expectations
No authoritative cross-platform statistic establishes a universal success rate or average completion time for these requests. Timing depends on source-owner action, service review, identity verification and recrawling. A request can be approved quickly while the underlying page remains live, or a source fix can wait for a crawler before an index changes.
Public-interest and public-record considerations can lead Google or a source owner to refuse. A refusal does not necessarily mean every layer is closed: you can still request correction, explain a specific safety risk, ask another service to suppress the result where its rules permit, and remove non-exempt broker copies.

- Review old resumes, social profiles, property listings and downloadable documents for unnecessary contact details.
- Remove phone numbers and home addresses from pages you control, then add a
noindexdirective where appropriate. - Use unique email aliases or phone numbers for public forms when practical.
- Check privacy settings before publishing event registrations, business filings or family information.
- Set a recurring reminder to search alternate spellings and old addresses.
- Maintain a private removal log with URLs, dates, service names and request IDs.
These measures reduce new copies but cannot guarantee that a public record or another person’s page will never be republished.
The practical bottom line
Start at the source, then work outward: Google, Bing/Copilot, ChatGPT and data brokers each control a different part of the exposure. Document every URL and response, use the narrowest verification possible, and recheck for duplicates after the source is corrected. Suppression in an AI or search service is useful, but durable removal requires changing the page or record from which the information originates.
