To remove Win32/Virut, disconnect the affected PC from networks, run a full scan with up-to-date antivirus software, and use Microsoft Defender Offline if detections persist. If infection remains suspected or Windows may be damaged, back up essential personal files and clean-install Windows. These steps are a recovery plan, not a guaranteed cure: Microsoft warns that manual removal is not recommended for a Virut variant.
What Win32/Virut can do
Microsoft describes Virut variants as polymorphic file infectors that target Windows .EXE and .SCR files. The family may also open an IRC backdoor that lets an attacker issue commands or download and run files. Behavior varies by variant. Microsoft’s threat descriptions date from 2009 and were updated in 2017, so they document known capabilities rather than establishing how common the malware is today. Microsoft Security Intelligence says of Virut.L: “Manual removal is not recommended for this threat.” Do not try to hand-edit infected executable files; they may be damaged or still unsafe. Microsoft Security Intelligence

- Disconnect the affected computer from shared networks. Turn off Wi-Fi and unplug Ethernet while you prepare. This precaution limits exposure in light of Virut’s documented backdoor capability; it is not a claim that disconnection removes the malware.
- Do not use the suspect PC to sign in to sensitive accounts. Use a separate, trusted device for banking, email, and password changes.
- Update your security product’s threat intelligence, then run a full-system scan. Follow the product’s instructions to quarantine or remove detections. Microsoft recommends an up-to-date full-system antivirus scan for Virut.L. Microsoft Security Intelligence
If the scan reports a clean result and the detection does not return, keep the security product enabled and monitor the PC. If the detection persists, returns, or cannot be cleaned, continue to the offline scan.

Step 2: Run Microsoft Defender Offline if detection persists
Microsoft Defender Offline restarts Windows into the Windows Recovery Environment and scans outside the usual active Windows session. This can help when malware persists through a normal scan. Save open work first because the PC will restart, then follow Microsoft’s current instructions for starting the scan in Windows Security: Help protect my PC with Microsoft Defender Offline.
After Windows starts again, check the scan results and run an up-to-date full scan. If Virut is still detected, Windows files appear damaged, or you cannot trust the installation, move to a clean reinstall rather than attempting manual repairs to infected programs.

Step 3: Clean-install Windows if infection remains suspected
A clean reinstall is the more disruptive recovery route, but it can replace a Windows installation that may be compromised or damaged. Microsoft recommends reinstalling Windows from installation media when malware infection is suspected. A clean installation removes files, applications, and settings from the selected drive, so make sure you understand which drive is selected and back up essential personal files first. Microsoft: Reinstall Windows with the installation media and Microsoft: Back up and restore with Windows Backup
- Back up only essential personal files. Avoid backing up applications, installers, scripts, or other executable files from the infected system. Microsoft notes that Virut can damage files beyond repair and that restoring a clean backup of the operating system and applications may be needed to return to a pre-infection state. Microsoft Security Intelligence
- Create installation media on another working PC. Microsoft’s instructions call for a USB drive with at least 8 GB of space; that is a requirement for creating the media, not a malware-removal statistic. Follow Microsoft’s current media-creation and reinstall instructions: Download Windows 11 or Download Windows 10. Confirm which Windows edition and device you have before proceeding.
- Install Windows from the media and choose the intended drive carefully. The clean install removes that selected drive’s contents, including personal files, apps, and settings. Microsoft’s walkthrough explains the process: Reinstall Windows with the installation media.
- Reinstall apps from trusted sources and scan restored files. Do not restore old applications or executable files from the infected installation. Keep the security product up to date and scan personal files before opening them.
If the computer belongs to a workplace or school, contact its IT team before disconnecting it further, backing up files, or reinstalling Windows. They may need to handle incident response and protect shared resources.

Protect other computers and shared folders
If the infected PC could access shared folders or other computers, check those systems too. Microsoft advises that computers with access to or hosting shares have up-to-date antivirus, that available network shares be scanned, and that share permissions be restricted as appropriate. Choose between scanning and reinstalling
| Recovery route | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Up-to-date full scan, then Defender Offline if needed | Start here; use the offline scan if a normal scan cannot clean the detection or it returns. | Less disruptive than reinstalling, but does not establish that damaged files or Windows components are intact. |
| Clean Windows reinstall | Use when infection remains suspected, Windows may be damaged, or confidence in the installation is low. | More decisive for replacing the installation, but removes files, apps, and settings from the selected drive. Essential files should be backed up first. |
