If the puzzle-piece icon is an extension button in Safari on a Mac, hold Command (⌘) and drag it out of the toolbar. That hides the button; it does not disable or uninstall the extension. On iPhone, the similar-looking control may be Safari’s Page Menu, which Apple’s current guide does not say can be permanently removed.
First, identify what you want to remove
The steps depend on your device and your goal. On Mac, you can remove an extension button from the toolbar while leaving the extension installed. You can also disable or uninstall the extension. On iPhone, you can manage an extension’s general or per-website access, but the Page Menu itself is not documented as permanently removable.
On Mac: hide the extension button
- In Safari, locate the extension button in the toolbar.
- Hold Command (⌘).
- Drag the button out of the toolbar, then release it.
This removes the visible toolbar item, not the extension. If the toolbar is hidden or the button is simply out of view, use View > Show Toolbar or View > Customize Toolbar to check the toolbar configuration. See Apple’s Safari window guide.
On Mac: disable or uninstall the extension
Turn it off
- In Safari, choose Safari > Settings.
- Select Extensions.
- Deselect the extension you want to disable.
Remove it
- In Safari > Settings > Extensions, select the extension.
- Click Uninstall. If the extension is provided by an app, you can instead delete that app.
Changes may take effect immediately or after you open a new page or refresh the current one. Apple notes that extensions may access the content of webpages you visit, so check what an extension does before leaving it enabled. See Apple’s guide to Safari extensions on Mac.

On iPhone: disable an extension or change its website access
Disable it generally
- Open Settings > Apps > Safari > Extensions.
- Tap the extension and turn it off.
If you use Safari profiles, extension settings may need to be changed separately for each profile.
Change access for one website
- Open the website in Safari.
- Open the Page Menu.
- Tap Manage Extensions, then turn the relevant extension on or off for that site.
Uninstall the extension
Find the extension’s app on your Home Screen, touch and hold its icon, tap Delete app, and follow the prompts. Apple’s instructions are in its guide to Safari extensions on iPhone.

Can you remove the Page Menu control on iPhone?
Apple’s iPhone guide explains how to edit the Page Menu by adding or removing Page and Tab Actions. It also documents Hide Toolbar, which hides the search field; tap the bottom of the screen to bring the toolbar back.
