To remove the blurred-background Portrait effect, open the image in the iPhone’s Photos app, tap Portrait at the top-left, then tap Portrait Off. If you only want less blur, adjust Depth Control instead; that changes the blur without turning Portrait off.
Turn off Portrait effect in Photos
-
Open Photos and select the image taken in Portrait mode.

Depending on the iOS version and screen context, you may instead see the toggle in the editing flow: open the photo, tap Edit, then tap Portrait to turn the effect off. Apple’s camera guide describes the Portrait control as turning the effect on or off.

Reduce background blur without turning Portrait off
If you want to keep the Portrait look but make the background less blurry, open the photo, tap Edit, and adjust the Depth Control slider. This changes the amount of blur; it is not the same as choosing Portrait Off. Apple’s iOS 26 guide explains both controls.
Turn Portrait back on or undo other edits
Where the Portrait toggle is available, you can turn the effect back on by opening the image, tapping Edit, and tapping Portrait. To undo saved edits, open the photo, tap Edit, tap Revert, then choose Revert to Original. Reverting restores the original rather than just adjusting the Portrait effect. Apple’s guide documents the revert option.

When Portrait editing is available on a regular photo
Portrait effects are not limited to images originally captured in Portrait mode in every case. On supported iPhone models, a photo taken in regular Photo mode may support Portrait editing if the phone captured depth information; Apple indicates this capability when the Depth button appears. It does not mean every Photo-mode image can be converted to Portrait.
Portrait effects and Live Photos
For an eligible Live Photo taken in Photo mode, Apple says Live Photo effects are unavailable while the Portrait effect is applied. Tap Live to view the Live Photo or use a Live Photo effect without Portrait. See Apple’s iOS 26 guidance.
