A Discord popup shown while you play on a Space Engineers server is almost always controlled by the Discord or Steam application on the player’s computer, not by the Space Engineers dedicated server. Start by identifying which program owns the popup. For a Discord overlay, open Discord’s User Settings > Overlay and turn off Enable Overlay. If the message is an activity notification rather than the in-game overlay, use Discord’s notification, registered-game, or activity-sharing controls instead.
The server owner cannot centrally disable a Discord interface that is rendered on each player’s PC. The steps below separate Discord overlay controls, Discord activity prompts, and Steam notifications so you can remove the specific popup without changing unrelated server settings.

The wording and appearance matter. “Discord popup” can describe several different windows, and each has a different control. Before changing settings, note the logo, title bar, buttons, and whether the message appears inside the game view or as a desktop notification.

The title alone does not identify the exact popup. If the first two remedies do nothing, read the popup again and check whether Steam, rather than Discord, is named on it.

Turn off the Discord Game Overlay
Discord describes Game Overlay as an interface that lets you access Discord while a game is running without switching windows. It is the correct setting for a Discord panel or banner drawn on top of Space Engineers.
Disable the overlay everywhere
- Open the Discord desktop application.
- Select the User Settings cogwheel.
- Open Overlay.
- Switch Enable Overlay off.
- Close and relaunch Space Engineers if the overlay was already active; a game that was running may retain the previous overlay state until it starts again.
This is a global Discord-client change. It affects Space Engineers and any other game for which Discord would otherwise display its in-game interface. The benefit is that every overlay-generated popup disappears. The trade-off is that you also lose overlay access to Discord text chat, voice controls, and other in-game Discord features.
Limit the change to Space Engineers
If you still want Discord’s overlay in other games, use Discord’s game-specific controls rather than the global switch. In Discord, open User Settings and locate Registered Games. Find Space Engineers in the detected-game list and disable its overlay there, if the per-game control is shown in your client. Leave other games enabled.
Game detection and labels can vary between Discord releases. If Space Engineers is not listed, launch the game with Discord running, return to Registered Games, and check whether Discord has detected it. If no per-game entry appears, the reliable documented fallback is the global Overlay switch.
Understand what this setting can and cannot remove
Disabling Game Overlay removes Discord’s in-game interface. It does not automatically turn off every Discord desktop notification. A separate activity prompt or ordinary message notification can still appear, which is why the next section is necessary when a popup remains.
Stop Discord activity prompts and game-status notifications
Discord can notify you when it detects a game or share Space Engineers as your current activity even when the in-game overlay is disabled. These controls are separate from Enable Overlay.

Use Discord’s Notifications settings
- Open Discord’s desktop User Settings.
- Select Notifications.
- Review the game-activity or activity-notification controls and turn off the option that announces detected game activity.
- Apply the change, then start Space Engineers again to verify that the activity popup no longer appears.
The exact wording can change with Discord’s interface, but the relevant location is the Notifications section. This route is appropriate when the popup appears as a normal Discord notification rather than a panel inside the game.
Remove Space Engineers from Registered Games
For a Space Engineers-specific fix, open User Settings > Registered Games. If Space Engineers is listed, disable its activity or overlay behavior using the controls shown beside that entry. Removing or disabling the game entry prevents Discord from treating that installation as a registered, actively shared game while leaving unrelated games alone.
If Discord repeatedly redetects the game, use the broader activity-sharing control described below. The registered-game list controls what Discord knows about a particular game; it is not a setting in the Space Engineers server.
Turn off activity sharing
Discord’s Activity Sharing controls determine whether your current game is shared with friends or displayed as your status. Disable activity sharing if you do not want Discord to announce Space Engineers at all. This is broader than changing one registered game: it can suppress activity disclosure for other games too.
Choose the narrowest setting that solves the problem. Disable only the Space Engineers entry when you want to keep activity sharing elsewhere. Use the global activity-sharing switch when you want Discord to stop publishing game activity across your account.

Check whether the popup is actually from Steam
A Steam invitation, friend alert, or Steam overlay message can be mistaken for a Discord popup, especially when both applications are running. The Discord overlay setting cannot suppress a Steam-owned window.
- Inspect the popup for Steam branding, a Steam logo, or Steam-specific wording.
- Open Steam’s settings for the Space Engineers game and review the per-game overlay option.
- Review Steam’s notification controls if the message is a desktop alert rather than an in-game overlay.
- Restart Space Engineers after changing Steam’s setting so a previously loaded overlay is not still present.
Steam’s menu names and layout can vary by client version, so confirm the application named in the popup before changing a setting. A server administrator cannot alter another player’s Steam overlay or notification preferences.
What a Space Engineers server owner can control
The dedicated server’s GUI and configuration files govern the Space Engineers server and its world: installation, server configuration, world management, and related gameplay settings. They do not provide a documented switch for Discord’s client-side overlay or activity notifications.

Discord renders its overlay on each player’s computer. Consequently, a server owner cannot remove it for everyone by editing the dedicated-server configuration, changing a world file, or restarting the server. Each affected player must change the Discord or Steam setting in their own client.
Why editing server files is the wrong first step
- A Discord overlay is drawn after the game client receives the server session; it is not part of the world data sent by the server.
- Dedicated-server documentation covers server installation, configuration, and worlds, not a Discord-popup option.
- Changing unrelated server settings can affect gameplay without changing a notification generated locally on a player’s PC.
If every player reports the same-looking message, ask one affected player to capture the exact wording and branding. A common Discord activity announcement still requires a client-side change on each machine; a server-wide message inside the game may be a different Space Engineers feature and should not be diagnosed as Discord without inspecting it.

Platform limits and what they imply
Discord documents its Game Overlay as compatible with Windows only. The documented support covers Windows 10 and Windows 11; Discord states that the overlay does not function on macOS or Linux.
Therefore, a Discord-branded popup on macOS or Linux is unlikely to be the documented Game Overlay. It may be a regular Discord desktop notification, an activity message, or a window from another application. On those platforms, identify the owning application first and use the corresponding notification or activity control rather than searching the Space Engineers server files for an overlay switch.
Choose the least disruptive remedy
Use this decision path to preserve features you still want:
- Popup is an in-game Discord panel on Windows: disable Enable Overlay. If you want overlay support in other games, disable Space Engineers specifically under Registered Games instead.
- Popup is a Discord activity announcement: change the activity notification setting under User Settings > Notifications, then disable Space Engineers in Registered Games if the control is available.
- You do not want any game-status sharing: turn off Discord’s activity-sharing control. This has a wider privacy and notification effect than changing one game.
- Popup is Steam-branded: adjust Steam’s per-game overlay or notification setting; Discord changes will not affect it.
- Popup persists on macOS or Linux: treat it as a regular notification or another application’s window, because the documented Discord Game Overlay is not supported there.

Verification checklist
After changing a setting, verify the result in the same order that the popup appeared:
- Exit Space Engineers completely and start it again; an already-running session may have loaded the old overlay state.
- Join the same server or reproduce the same action that triggered the popup.
- Check whether the popup was an in-game panel, a desktop notification, or a Steam message.
- If an in-game Discord panel is gone but a desktop alert remains, revisit User Settings > Notifications and activity-sharing controls.
- If only one player sees the popup, troubleshoot that player’s Discord or Steam client rather than changing the shared server.
- If players on different platforms report different behavior, apply the platform-specific distinction: Windows supports the documented Discord overlay; macOS and Linux do not.
Common mistakes
Changing only the overlay switch
The overlay switch addresses Discord’s in-game interface, not every activity notification. A remaining alert does not necessarily mean the switch failed; it may be generated by the separate Notifications or Activity Sharing controls.

Disabling activity sharing when only the overlay is unwanted
Activity sharing affects what Discord publishes about your game. If you only want to remove the interface while keeping status sharing, disable the overlay or the Space Engineers game entry instead of turning off activity sharing globally.
Expecting a server restart to fix a client popup
Restarting the dedicated server does not change Discord’s local settings. Restart the game after changing the client setting, but do not edit server files for a Discord-only message.
Assuming every notification with a game name is Discord
Steam can display similarly timed invitations and overlay notices. Branding and wording identify the correct control; use Steam’s settings when Steam owns the message.
When to ask for more information
If none of the documented controls matches the popup, collect the exact text, the application logo, the operating system, and whether the message appears inside the game or on the desktop. Those details distinguish a Discord overlay from an activity notification, Steam alert, or an unrelated Space Engineers message. Without that identification, changing additional server settings is unlikely to help.
