For stink bugs you can reach, vacuum them up without crushing them; for bugs hidden inside a wall or attic void, focus on exclusion rather than spraying the cavity. Indoor brown marmorated stink bugs are generally nuisance invaders, not insects that reproduce indoors or damage a building. A household vacuum cannot reach insects sealed inside a wall, and indoor insecticides may leave dead bugs in inaccessible spaces where they can attract carpet beetles.
Choose a method based on where the bugs are
| Situation | Best first step | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Visible bugs in a room or accessible attic | Vacuum or collect them without crushing them, then promptly empty or dispose of the captured insects. | Mechanical removal works on insects you can reach. Vacuuming can leave odor in the machine, so a dedicated or easily cleaned device may be preferable. Penn State Extension and Iowa State Extension support removal by vacuum. |
| Insects inside a sealed wall, soffit, or attic cavity | Vacuum bugs as they emerge into accessible areas; inspect and seal suitable exterior entry points at an appropriate time. | A spray or fogger may not reach sheltered insects, does not stop new ones from entering, and can leave carcasses in the void. Maryland Extension and Penn State Extension caution against treating these concealed indoor aggregations. |
Remove bugs you can reach
Use a vacuum without crushing the insects
A vacuum is a practical way to collect stink bugs from an accessible attic, room, or other reachable area. Do not assume it will extract bugs from a closed wall cavity. Because odor may remain in the vacuum, consider a dedicated hand-held vacuum or a shop vacuum that is easy to clean rather than using a household vacuum you rely on for other cleaning.
Washington State University Extension describes using a wet/dry shop vacuum, including soapy water in the canister. Follow the vacuum manufacturer’s instructions: do not add liquid unless the machine is designed to handle it. After collecting bugs, promptly empty or dispose of the contents in a way suitable for your vacuum. Iowa State advises promptly removing and discarding a vacuum bag; NC State describes freezing a dedicated vacuum container. WSU Extension, Iowa State Extension, and NC State Extension describe these approaches.
Collect individual bugs by hand or container
If there are only a few visible insects, avoid crushing them. NC State Extension describes capturing a bug in a jar and then freezing it or drowning it in soapy water. Choose a method that is practical and safe for the location; keep containers and liquids away from electrical equipment and finishes that could be damaged.

A practical helper for everyday bug encounters, including use by seniors and children under adult supervision.
Handle bugs concealed in walls or attic spaces differently
Do not treat a wall void or attic as an ordinary indoor spray job. Household aerosols and total-release foggers may not penetrate the places where stink bugs shelter. They also do not close the routes insects use to enter the building. Maryland Extension warns against indoor foggers and spraying cracks as an entry-prevention strategy; Penn State and Maryland also caution that dead stink bugs in concealed spaces can provide food for carpet beetles. Carpet beetles may damage woolens, stored dry goods, and other natural materials.
Instead, note where bugs appear in living areas, remove those accessible insects mechanically, and look for exterior gaps that could be allowing entry. If the problem is extensive or recurring, or resolving it requires opening a building cavity, a licensed local pest-management professional can inspect the situation. The sources do not establish a guaranteed service or outcome.

Seal entry points without blocking ventilation
Inspect likely routes into the building
Check window and door frames, damaged screens, siding gaps, utility-pipe and wire penetrations, fascia, eaves, and attic louvers or vents. Use appropriate exterior caulk, weatherstripping, or screen-repair materials for the opening and surface. Preserve required roof, soffit, and attic ventilation; do not seal vents simply because bugs are nearby.

NC State Extension reports that an adult brown marmorated stink bug can pass through an opening as small as 3 by 7 mm. That is an opening-size observation, not an estimate of how common infestations are. See NC State Extension’s BMSB FAQ.

Time exclusion around local activity
Sealing at the wrong time can trap bugs that are already inside. NC State advises letting them leave in spring and sealing before their late-August return attempt, while warning that exclusion in fall, winter, or early spring may trap insects indoors. Those dates reflect NC State’s regional guidance, not a universal calendar: climate and stink bug activity vary by location. Where timing is uncertain, inspect locally and avoid sealing an opening if doing so would trap insects inside or obstruct ventilation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When pesticide use may be considered
Extension guidance does not support indiscriminate indoor pesticide treatment for bugs already concealed in wall or attic voids. Maryland says pesticides are generally ineffective and not recommended for home control; Penn State likewise warns about inaccessible insects and secondary pests. For very large numbers gathering outside, Cornell describes professional perimeter treatment as an extreme option with safety and air-quality concerns. Penn State notes that exterior applications may offer minor relief where complete sealing is difficult, but sunlight shortens residual effectiveness and its guidance places such treatment with a licensed operator before autumn aggregation. These are limited, location- and season-dependent possibilities, not a substitute for exclusion or a recommendation to spray indoors.
