For stains and stuck-on food, let Le Creuset enameled cast iron cool completely, then wash it with warm soapy water and a soft, non-abrasive sponge. Soaking or a gentle baking-soda method can loosen stubborn residue; a cookware cleaner may help with persistent stains and discoloration. These steps clean the surface, but Le Creuset does not provide a method for repairing a genuine scratch. If the interior enamel is chipped, stop using the cookware.
What cleaning can—and cannot—remove
Gentle cleaning can address food residue, oil buildup, heat discoloration, and some surface marks. A mark that remains after cleaning may be damage, but Le Creuset’s care guidance does not give a definitive test for distinguishing every removable mark from a scratch.
Cleaning products are not enamel repair products. Le Creuset’s published instructions describe how to clean stains and protect the enamel, but do not provide a repair procedure for a genuine scratch. Do not try to polish or abrade the area in an effort to remove one.
Start with a safe wash
- Let the cookware cool to room temperature. Do not put a hot pan into cold water or fill it with cold water; sudden temperature changes can crack the enamel. Le Creuset’s care and use instructions and its cleaning guidance advise cooling cookware before washing.
- Wash gently. Use warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft natural or nylon sponge or brush. Avoid metal pads and harsh abrasive cleaners or utensils, which may scratch or damage the enamel.
- Rinse and dry thoroughly. Store the cookware in a dry place.
Loosen stuck-on food without scrubbing hard
Soak first
For residue that does not lift with a normal wash, soak the cooled cookware in warm, soapy water. Then clean it with a soft sponge or brush.

Use Le Creuset’s baking-soda simmer method
For persistent residue, Le Creuset’s care article recommends adding one or two tablespoons of baking soda to water, bringing it to a simmer for about 8–10 minutes, then letting the cookware cool before cleaning gently with a soft sponge. Do not use this as a reason to scour the enamel. See the brand’s care and use instructions.
For stubborn stains, oil residue, or discoloration
Le Creuset recommends its Pots and Pans Cleaner for tough stains and marks; the product page describes it for heat stains, discoloration, and everyday buildup on enameled cast iron and stainless steel. Follow the cleaner’s label directions. The product is for cleaning—not for repairing scratched, chipped, or abraded enamel.

- Bottle Size: 8. 45 fluid ounces (250ml)
- Made in France
- Simply apply cleaner, rinse with water, and wipe clean
- Works on both sand-interior and matte black interior
Le Creuset’s cleaning article also names Bar Keepers Friend or a baking-soda-and-water paste for tough stains, oil residue, and marks. Follow the product directions and apply gently; avoid abrasive scrubbing. These recommendations address cleaning marks, not fixing a scratch. See Le Creuset’s cleaning guidance.
What to do if the enamel is chipped
If enamel on the interior is chipped, stop using the cookware immediately. Le Creuset says cookware with chipped interior enamel is no longer safe to use. Cleaning cannot restore missing enamel; consult the brand’s care and use instructions for its safety guidance.
