Let the cookware cool completely, then clean it with warm soapy water and a soft sponge. Soak stuck-on food for 15–20 minutes; for burnt-on residue, simmer warm water with baking soda for about 8–10 minutes, cool, and wipe gently. For stains that remain, try a baking soda paste or a suitable cookware cleaner.
Clean Le Creuset enameled cast iron step by step
- Let it cool fully. Wait until the pot or pan reaches room temperature before washing. Le Creuset warns that adding cold water to hot cookware can cause thermal shock and damage the enamel. See Le Creuset Care and Use.
- Wash gently. Use warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft natural or nylon sponge or brush. Avoid metal sponges, harsh abrasive cleaners, and abrasive utensils that can scratch the enamel.
- Soak stuck-on food. Fill the cookware with warm, soapy water and leave it for about 15–20 minutes. Then loosen the food with a soft sponge or brush. The soak time is Le Creuset’s guidance, not a guaranteed result for every residue.
- Simmer baking soda for burnt-on food. Add one or two tablespoons of baking soda to warm water in the pot, bring it to a simmer, and simmer for about 8–10 minutes. Let the pot and liquid cool before draining; then remove softened food with dish soap and a soft sponge. Rinse and dry thoroughly. These timings come from Le Creuset’s 2022 cleaning instructions.
- Use a stain treatment only if needed. For discoloration or marks left after washing, Le Creuset names a baking soda-and-water paste, Bar Keepers Friend, and its own cookware cleaner as options. Follow the cleaner’s directions and apply it without an abrasive pad.
Choose a method for the mark you have
| Problem | Method | What to use |
|---|---|---|
| Loose food or everyday residue | Wash | Warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft sponge or brush |
| Stuck-on food | Soak | Warm, soapy water for about 15–20 minutes |
| Burnt-on food | Simmer, then wipe | One or two tablespoons of baking soda in warm water; simmer about 8–10 minutes, cool, and clean gently |
| Persistent stain or discoloration | Spot-treat | Baking soda paste, Bar Keepers Friend, or Le Creuset cookware cleaner, following product directions |
The gentlest suitable option is a sensible first choice. Le Creuset lists several treatments, but its guidance does not establish that one is universally more effective than the others.
When a dedicated cleaner may help
Le Creuset’s Pots and Pans Cleaner is described for enameled cast iron and stainless steel, including heat stains, discoloration, and everyday buildup. It is optional; start with soap and water or the baking soda method first. Product availability and price can change.

Prevent residue and protect the enamel
- Cook over low or medium heat unless a recipe calls for more. Le Creuset says overheating is a common reason food sticks; heated oil or fat can also leave sticky residue at high temperatures. These are general manufacturer care points, not a diagnosis of every stain.
- Use soft, non-abrasive cleaning tools rather than metal pads or abrasive utensils.
- After washing, rinse and dry the cookware thoroughly. Le Creuset advises against storing it damp and recommends a dry storage place.
Why cooling before washing matters
Enamel can be damaged by a sudden temperature change. Do not put cold water into a hot pot; allow it to reach room temperature first. If residue is stubborn, use a soak or the baking soda simmer after the cookware has cooled, rather than trying to scrub aggressively.
