To remove a photo’s location before sharing, use the built-in location controls on your phone. On iPhone, Photos can remove a saved location, and the Share sheet can exclude location for a particular send. On Android, turn off the camera’s location or geotag setting; Google Photos can remove locations that it estimated or that you added manually, but it cannot remove a location automatically embedded by the camera.
These controls are primarily location controls. They do not establish that every EXIF field has been removed. Timestamps, camera or device identifiers, editing information and other metadata may remain unless you use a separate, verified metadata-cleaning workflow. Also inspect what is visible in the image itself: signs, house numbers, landmarks, reflections and distinctive views can reveal where a photo was taken even when location data is absent.
What “personal information” in photo metadata means
Photos can contain EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) information written by a camera or phone. Depending on the device and app, that information can include GPS coordinates, capture date and time, camera model, lens details, orientation and editing history. The practical privacy risk most often discussed by Apple and Google is the location field, because it can identify where the camera was when the image was made.

The source of the location matters. A camera-embedded GPS value is different from a location Google Photos estimated from other information or one a person entered manually. The available edit controls depend on that distinction.
iPhone: remove or exclude location
Remove the location from a photo already in Photos
Use this when the image is already in your iPhone library and you want to change its saved location.
- Open the Photos app.
- Open the photo you want to change. For a batch operation, select the photos first if your iOS version presents the same information controls for multiple items.
- Open More or Adjust Info, depending on the interface shown on your iPhone.
- Choose Adjust Location.
- Choose No Location.
After this change, the Photos item no longer has the location that was displayed in its information panel. The action is specifically about location; do not describe it as proof that the file contains no other EXIF data.
Prevent the Camera from collecting location in future photos
Stopping permission prevents new camera captures from being tagged through the Camera app. It does not retroactively edit pictures that are already in the library.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Location Services.
- Tap Camera.
- Set access to Never.
With Camera set to Never, newly captured photos should not receive camera location data through that permission. Other apps may have separate location permissions, and a photo imported from another device can still contain the metadata written by its original camera.

Exclude location from one share
This is the fastest option when you want to keep your library information intact but omit location from a particular message, post or transfer.
- In Photos, select one or more photos.
- Tap Share.
- Tap Options at the top of the share sheet.
- Turn Location off.
- Tap Done, then choose the destination and share.
Think of this as “exclude location for this share,” not “strip the original.” The copy produced by the share route is the one you intended to send, while the copy in your Photos library can retain its existing information.

When to use each iPhone control
- Use No Location when you want to change the saved information on a specific photo.
- Use Camera > Never when you want to stop future camera captures from collecting location.
- Turn off Location in Share > Options when you need a one-time privacy decision and do not want to edit the library item.
If the destination is important, send the resulting copy to yourself first and inspect its information before sending it to someone else. A share option can vary by destination and app, so verify the file produced by the exact route you plan to use.
Android: stop the camera from adding location
Android does not have one universal camera menu. Phone makers use different camera apps and labels, so look in the Camera app’s own settings for a location, GPS or geotag control.
- Open the phone’s Camera app.
- Open Camera settings, usually through a gear icon or a three-dot menu.
- Find the setting that refers to location, geotagging or saved location.
- Turn that setting off.

The wording and menu placement can change with the phone model, camera version and software release. If you cannot find the switch, use the Camera settings search field (if provided) and try “location,” “GPS,” “tag” or “geotag.” Disabling this option affects future captures by that camera; it does not clean photos already saved with coordinates.

What Google Photos can change
Google Photos can remove a location when the location was estimated by Google Photos or added manually. If the interface shows Remove location for such an item, use that command to remove that location from the Google Photos record.
Google Photos cannot edit or remove a location that the camera automatically embedded in the file. If a picture was geotagged by the phone’s Camera app, turning off a Google Photos location display or changing an estimated location does not rewrite that camera-embedded value.
Why a downloaded copy can still reveal the original location
Google explains that sharing behavior depends on how the photo is shared. Location controls can differ for shared albums, links and conversations, and partner sharing can include location details. More importantly, a photo downloaded from Google Photos and then sent through another service may expose the original location saved by the device, regardless of a change made to an estimated or manually added location in Google Photos.
When location privacy matters, do not assume that viewing a photo without a visible map pin means every exported file is clean. Check the exact copy you downloaded or attached, not only the online library view.

Samsung Gallery and other manufacturer apps
Samsung support warns that location data may be stored in a photo and should be considered before sharing from Gallery. The exact Gallery controls can depend on the device and software version, so avoid relying on a universal Samsung sequence. Check the information or sharing controls shown on your model, and use the Camera app’s Location tags switch to prevent new tags.
Choose the right workflow by location source
Before changing anything, decide whether you are preventing a future tag, editing an existing item or preparing one outgoing copy. Then consider where the location came from.
- Future camera tag: turn off Camera location on iPhone or the Android camera’s Save location, Location tags or equivalent option.
- Existing iPhone location: use Photos, Adjust Info, Adjust Location and No Location.
- One iPhone share: use Share, Options and turn Location off before selecting the destination.
- Existing Android location: in Google Photos, use Remove location only when the location is estimated or manually added; it will not remove a camera-embedded value.
- File exported outside the photo service: inspect the exported attachment itself, because the route can preserve the original camera metadata.
This sequence prevents a common mistake: changing a display or estimated location and then assuming that a separately downloaded camera file has also been rewritten.

Removing GPS information does not make a photograph anonymous. Google warns that people can infer location from visual clues. Before posting or sending a supposedly private image, scan the frame for:
- Street signs, business names and transit signs
- House numbers, mail labels and apartment markings
- Distinctive buildings, monuments and landscapes
- Reflections in windows, mirrors, vehicles or glossy screens
- Views from a balcony, office, hotel room or recognizable route
- Documents, badges, shipping labels or screens visible in the background
Crop or cover a clue only when you are certain the edited copy is the one being shared. A screenshot, resized export or social-media upload may be processed differently from the original file, so verify the actual attachment where the stakes are high.

Common problems and fixes
“I turned off location, but old photos still show a map.”
Turning off the camera setting affects future captures. Open the old photo and remove its location using the applicable iPhone Photos control, or determine whether Google Photos is showing an estimated/manual location versus a camera-embedded one.
“Google Photos shows Remove location, but the downloaded file still has a location.”
The removable value may be an estimate or manual entry, while the downloaded file retains the camera-embedded GPS value. Check the exported file and avoid treating the online display as a guarantee about every copy.
“My Android camera has no setting called location.”
Look for Save location, Location tags, Save location info, Geo-tag photos, Tag locations or Store location data. Labels vary by manufacturer and software version. If the setting is absent, consult the controls in that camera app rather than assuming Android has a single system-wide camera menu.
“I disabled location in the iPhone share sheet, but I am worried about the original.”
The Share sheet setting is intended to exclude location from that share. It is not the same as editing the library item. If you want the original changed too, use Photos, Adjust Info, Adjust Location and No Location.
“Does turning off location remove all photo metadata?”
No. The documented controls establish location prevention or removal, not complete EXIF erasure. Other fields such as time, camera model and editing information may remain. If your requirement is a full metadata purge, you need a workflow specifically verified to remove every field you care about, then you must check the resulting file.
