To remove or change someone in Pixel VIPs, open the Pixel VIP management screen from the VIPs widget, the VIPs overlay, or Google Contacts. The documented paths all lead to Manage your VIPs; use the options shown there to remove an existing person or choose a different person. This changes Pixel VIP membership, not the person’s underlying Google Contacts record.
What changing or removing a Pixel VIP actually does
Pixel VIPs is a priority-contact feature on supported Pixel phones. It gives selected people a dedicated place in the VIPs widget and can surface information such as recent interactions, significant dates and, when shared through Google Maps, a contact’s location. Google introduced the feature with the June 2025 Pixel Drop. Google’s product announcement describes the widget as a way to see details such as a recent message, birthdays and shared location.
Removing a person from Pixel VIPs removes that person from the VIP list. It is not the same as deleting the person from Google Contacts. The available help instructions cover VIP-list management; they do not instruct you to delete the contact record.

Before you start: compatibility and limits
Pixel VIPs is documented for Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold. Google’s current English help page allows up to 16 people. The feature may not appear on an earlier Pixel model, and menu wording can vary slightly by Android, app or language version.

These requirements and behaviors come from Google Pixel Phone Help. If your menus differ, look for the same functions under Pixel VIPs, VIPs or contact-management settings rather than assuming a problem with the contact.

All three documented entry points open the same management area. Choose the one that is visible on your phone.

The labels above are Google’s current English labels. A translated interface or a different app version can use slightly different wording, but the destination is the VIP-management screen.

Remove a person from the VIPs widget
- From the Home screen, tap the VIPs widget.
- Tap the widget’s Settings icon.
- Tap Manage your VIPs.
- On the management screen, use the available on-screen option to remove the person from your VIPs, then follow any confirmation or selection prompts shown on your phone.
Google documents the route to Manage your VIPs, but does not publish the final selection and confirmation control names. Do not look for a particular button label if your version presents the choices differently; read the options on that screen and confirm only the change you intend.
Remove or change a VIP from the overlay
- Open the Pixel VIPs overlay.
- Tap Menu.
- Tap More.
- Tap Manage your VIPs.
- Use the controls displayed there to remove the existing person or select a replacement, and complete the on-screen confirmation if one appears.
This route is useful when the widget is not placed on your Home screen but the VIPs interface is still available. It reaches the same list-management controls as the widget route.
Manage VIPs from Google Contacts
Starting with a specific contact
- Open the Google Contacts app.
- Open the contact whose VIP status you want to change.
- Tap the contact’s VIP tag.
- Tap Manage your VIPs.
- Follow the choices shown on the management screen to remove that person or make another membership change.
This method is convenient when you are looking at the person’s details and want to move directly to VIP management. Tapping the VIP tag is a membership-management shortcut; it does not delete or edit the contact’s phone number, email address or other saved fields.
Starting with the complete list
- Open Google Contacts.
- Tap Organize.
- Tap Pixel VIPs.
- Choose the on-screen management option for the person you want to remove or replace.
Use this list view when you are not sure which contact currently has VIP status or when you want to review the whole set before making a change.

How to change one VIP for another
There is no separate “edit VIP” form described by Google. In practice, changing a person means opening Manage your VIPs, removing the person who should no longer be a VIP and selecting the person who should take that place. The exact final controls are version-dependent, so use the choices displayed on your phone rather than relying on an undocumented button sequence.
If you already have 16 VIPs, you may need to remove one before adding another because Google documents a maximum of 16 people. Make the change from any of the three entry points above, then check the resulting list before leaving the screen.
What happens to Favorites and Do Not Disturb
Google states that VIPs are automatically added to Favorite contacts and that VIPs can bypass Do Not Disturb. Those are important reasons to review related settings after changing membership.

- Favorites: Open your phone’s Contacts or Phone app and inspect the Favorites list if you do not want the former VIP to remain there. Google does not explicitly document whether removing VIP status automatically removes the person from Favorites.
- Do Not Disturb: Check the relevant notification or interruption settings if the person must no longer receive priority treatment. Google does not state that removing VIP status automatically clears every notification exception.
- VIP widget information: The widget can show recent interactions, significant dates and shared location when the contact shares location through Google Maps. Changing VIP membership affects who is surfaced as a VIP; it does not imply that the underlying contact or shared-location permission has been deleted.
Remove a VIP without deleting the contact
If your goal is simply to stop highlighting someone as a VIP, use one of the VIP-management routes. Do not use a delete-contact command. A Google Contacts record can contain phone numbers, email addresses, birthdays and other information that you may still need after the person leaves the VIP list.

Conversely, deleting or editing a contact is not a documented substitute for changing VIP membership. If the person remains in the VIP list, return to Manage your VIPs and change membership there.

The VIPs widget is not visible
Use the overlay route or open Google Contacts instead. In Google Contacts, the documented list route is Organize > Pixel VIPs. The widget is only one entry point, so its absence does not prevent list management if the feature is supported on your phone.
You cannot find “Manage your VIPs”
- Try all three documented entry points: the widget’s Settings, the overlay’s Menu > More, or an individual contact’s VIP tag.
- Open Google Contacts and look under Organize for Pixel VIPs.
- Check that the phone is a Pixel 6 or newer, including Pixel Fold. Earlier models are not listed as supported.
- Update Google Contacts and the other apps Google identifies for the feature, including Pixel Weather and WhatsApp.
- If the phone uses another language, search for the translated equivalent of “Pixel VIPs” or “Manage your VIPs”; labels can vary by language and app version.
The person is not in the list
Confirm that you opened the intended Google Contacts record and that you are viewing the same account that contains the contact. If the contact has more than one record, inspect the record carrying the VIP tag. Do not create a duplicate contact solely to make it appear in VIP management; first check the existing records and account selection.
You cannot add a replacement
Check the documented limit of 16 VIPs. If the list is full, remove the person who should leave before selecting a replacement. If the phone or app is not current, update the supported apps and reopen Google Contacts before trying again.

The old person still appears as a favorite or can interrupt Do Not Disturb
VIP removal and downstream settings are not fully specified in Google’s help documentation. Inspect Favorites and the phone’s Do Not Disturb or notification-exception settings manually. Remove the person from those areas only if you want to end that separate priority behavior.
The widget does not show location
Pixel VIPs can show location when the contact shares it through Google Maps. VIP membership alone does not grant location access. If location is absent, the contact may not be sharing it, or the relevant sharing relationship may not be active.
A safe checklist for changing a VIP
- Confirm that the phone is a supported Pixel model and that Google Contacts is up to date.
- Open VIP management from the widget, overlay or Google Contacts.
- Identify the exact person to remove; check duplicate contact records before confirming.
- Use the on-screen controls in Manage your VIPs to remove or replace the person.
- Verify the resulting VIP list, especially if you were replacing someone at the 16-person limit.
- Review Favorites and Do Not Disturb exceptions if the person must no longer receive priority treatment.
Key points to remember
Pixel VIP membership is managed separately from the contact record. The three supported routes are the VIPs widget, the VIPs overlay and Google Contacts; Google Contacts also provides the direct Organize > Pixel VIPs list path. Open Manage your VIPs, make the change shown by your version of the interface and then check Favorites or notification exceptions separately when priority behavior matters.
