Let the pan cool, then simmer water with a little dish soap in it and gently lift the burnt food with a wooden spoon. Wash and dry the pan; if residue remains, try a baking soda paste or a cleaner labeled for stainless steel cookware, using a soft, non-abrasive sponge.
Start with the gentlest method
- Let the pan cool. Avoid putting cold water into a very hot pan; sudden temperature changes can cause thermal shock. Remove loose food and wash away anything that lifts with warm, soapy water and a soft sponge.
- Loosen the stuck food. Add enough water to cover the burnt residue and a little dish soap. Bring the water to a boil, then carefully use a wooden spoon to ease the residue from the pan’s bottom. Handle the hot water and pan cautiously.
- Wash and inspect. Pour out the water once the residue has loosened. Wash with soapy water, rinse, and dry. If food remains, repeat this gentle approach or move to a suitable next step instead of immediately using aggressive abrasion.
What to try if residue remains
Baking soda paste
Mix baking soda with enough water to make a paste, apply it to the stuck-on food, and scrub gently with a non-abrasive sponge. Rinse the pan thoroughly afterward.
Baking soda and vinegar
Another suggested method is to sprinkle baking soda over the affected area, scrub, then add distilled white vinegar. The mixture will foam and may help loosen residue. Rinse thoroughly when finished. This is a suggested cleaning method, not a proven improvement over baking soda paste alone.

Stainless-steel cookware cleaner
If pantry methods do not shift the buildup, consider a powdered cleaner specifically labeled for stainless steel cookware. Made In names Bar Keepers Friend as one example and directs users of its stainless cleaner to apply a small sprinkle with a soft, non-abrasive sponge. Follow the cleaner’s own label and your pan maker’s care instructions: Made In says not to use its branded cleaner on the cooking surface of its nonstick line or on carbon steel.

Choose a method for the mark you see
| What is on the pan? | A reasonable next step |
|---|---|
| Loose food or light residue | Warm, soapy water and a soft sponge. |
| Burnt food still stuck to the surface | Boil water with a little dish soap in the pan, then gently scrape with a wooden spoon. |
| Stubborn food marks | Try a baking soda paste, or the baking soda-and-distilled-vinegar method; rinse thoroughly. |
| Persistent buildup | Use a powdered cleaner labeled for stainless steel cookware, following its directions and the pan maker’s care guidance. |
| Rainbow discoloration or mineral deposits | These may not be burnt food. Made In suggests vinegar for rainbow tint and mineral deposits; identify the mark before choosing a cleaning method. |
These are manufacturer cleaning recommendations, not results from a controlled comparison. They do not establish that one method is always fastest or most effective. Choose based on the residue, what you have available, and what your pan’s care instructions allow.
Protect the pan while cleaning
- Use a wooden spoon or another non-abrasive tool to loosen food rather than scraping with an abrasive utensil.
- Let the pan cool before cleaning and avoid abrupt temperature changes.
- Use a soft or non-abrasive sponge, especially with a powdered cleaner.
- Check the specific cleaner label and pan manufacturer’s instructions. Stainless cookware care can vary by pan.
Is the stain actually burnt food?
Rainbow heat tint and mineral deposits can look like food marks but are different problems. Made In describes vinegar as an option for those marks. If you are unsure what caused a stain, start with your pan maker’s care advice rather than escalating to a harsher scrub.
