There is no universal way to uninstall an activity monitoring agent: the steps depend on the product, operating system, and how the software was installed. Identify the agent first, then follow its vendor’s instructions for your device. If the computer is managed by an employer or another organization, ask its IT team before removing anything.
Before you uninstall, identify the agent and who manages the device
- Find the agent’s exact name. Check the device’s installed apps or ask the person or team responsible for it. “Activity monitoring agent” is a general description, not one product.
- Identify the operating system. Uninstall instructions can differ between Windows, macOS, and Linux, even for the same vendor’s software.
- Check whether the device is organization-managed. If it belongs to your employer or another organization, contact its IT administrator. The organization may control the agent, require administrator access to remove it, or have a policy that reinstalls it.
- Read the vendor’s current instructions for that product and operating system. Do not substitute instructions for a different agent or try to bypass uninstall protection or management controls.
Why removal may need administrator or IT involvement
Some agents are managed through an administrator account rather than solely from the computer. ActivTrak says its agent is deployed and managed by the organization’s account administrator, and directs non-administrators who want it removed to contact IT. Its documented removal methods require access to the ActivTrak account. ActivTrak’s uninstall instructions were updated August 31, 2026.
Other vendors specify elevated permissions for local removal. Elastic documents separate uninstall instructions for Windows, macOS, and Linux and says administrator or root privileges are required. Use the commands and steps on Elastic’s current uninstall page only if Elastic Agent is the software installed on your device.
What can happen when an agent is removed
Related features may stop working
Removing an agent can remove more than monitoring. N-able says uninstalling its Windows Agent also removes associated programs and deployed features, which may include managed antivirus and patch management. Check the product-specific effects before proceeding, especially on an organization-managed computer. N-able’s Windows Agent instructions describe behavior for that product; it should not be assumed to apply to other agents.

A deployment policy may install it again
The method used to install the agent can affect whether it stays removed. N-able advises removing an agent installed through Group Policy by using the same Group Policy Object. Otherwise, the policy may detect that the agent is missing and reinstall it. If you do not manage that policy, ask the organization’s IT administrator to handle the removal.
Device records may be handled separately
Uninstalling software from a computer does not necessarily remove its associated record or data from an administrator’s dashboard. N-able documents a dashboard removal workflow that can delete device-associated data, but that behavior is specific to its product. Confirm with the vendor or the organization’s administrator what will happen to records before requesting or performing removal.

After an authorized uninstall
- Check the installed-apps list or the vendor’s confirmation method to verify the agent was removed.
- If it returns, ask IT whether a deployment policy is reinstalling it; do not repeatedly remove it or attempt to defeat the policy.
- Ask the administrator whether the device record, related services, or organization-side deployment settings need separate handling.
