To stop Windows 11 from indexing folders it added on its own, open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows, then select Customize search locations > Modify and clear the checked folders in the Indexed locations list. Switching the search mode to Classic is a separate step, and it does not by itself remove every location, because Classic keeps four default folders indexed.

What “automatically added” locations means

Windows Search builds an index of files on your device so searches return results quickly. The index holds file names, full paths, and, for files that contain text, the file contents. The folders Windows indexes are not fixed. They depend on the search mode you have selected under Find my files, and on any additional folders that were added to the list over time.

Microsoft also notes that installed apps may add information to the index for their own search features. The support page does not say which locations those apps add or whether such entries appear in the same Indexed locations list, so check the list directly rather than assuming the mode setting controls everything.

Remove indexed locations step by step

Microsoft documents the Indexing Options dialog as the interface for changing indexed locations. Use these steps on Windows 11:

  1. Open Settings and select Privacy & security, then select Searching Windows.
  2. Under Find my files, check which option is selected. Enhanced indexes all user folders and files. Classic covers a narrower set, described in the table below.
  3. Select Customize search locations, then select Modify. The Indexing Options dialog opens with an Indexed locations list.
  4. Clear the checkbox beside each folder you want removed from the index.
  5. Select OK to confirm, then reopen Modify to verify that the checkboxes you cleared are no longer ticked.

If you are on Enhanced, changing to Classic narrows the default set but does not empty it. Classic still indexes Documents, Pictures, Music, and Desktop, so those four folders must also be unchecked in Modify if you want them out of the index. The official guidance does not say what happens when every location is unchecked, so review the list after you finish.

Classic or Enhanced: which mode to choose

The mode decides which folders are indexed before you make any manual changes. The choice is between breadth of coverage and system-resource use.

Factor Classic Enhanced
Folders indexed by default Documents, Pictures, Music, and Desktop All user folders and files
Resource use (as described by Microsoft) A balance between search performance and resource use Higher potential system-resource use
Best fit You keep most files in the default folders You store files in other locations and want them in search results
Initial indexing time Up to a couple of hours is Microsoft’s general estimate; no mode-specific figure is stated Same general estimate; no mode-specific figure is stated

Reduce content indexing without excluding a folder

If you want to keep a folder in search but stop Windows from reading its contents, change the file-type settings instead of removing the location. Properties-only indexing keeps file-name search working for that type, but the contents of those files become unsearchable.

  1. Open the Indexing Options dialog from Customize search locations > Modify, or search for “Indexing Options” from the Start menu.
  2. Select Advanced, then open the File Types tab.
  3. Select a file extension in the list.
  4. Choose whether Windows indexes properties only, or properties and file contents, then select OK.

What to expect after you make changes

Microsoft’s support page states: “When you first run indexing, it can take up to a couple hours to complete.” Once the initial pass finishes, Windows updates the index as files change. The page does not give a completion time for removing one particular location.

Microsoft also gives a rule of thumb that the index is less than 10 percent of the size of the indexed files. The support page does not date this figure. Microsoft warns that the proportion can rise substantially when a location holds many very small files (under 4 KB) or source code.

Limits of this procedure

  • The steps above use the Microsoft-documented interface. Settings labels and dialog layout can differ slightly between Windows 11 builds, so match the wording you see on screen.
  • Routine removal of a location does not require rebuilding the index or editing the registry, based on Microsoft’s guidance.
  • Whether a folder that an app adds to the index comes back after an app update is not covered by the official page.

Microsoft Support’s page on indexing behaviour is at Search indexing in Windows.
