To remove a Yale smart lock safely, first identify its exact model and decide whether you mean taking the hardware off the door, replacing a keyed cylinder or removable module, or removing the lock from the Yale Home app. Yale’s instructions vary by lock and region, so there is no single removal sequence that applies to every Yale smart lock.
Identify the lock and the task before removing anything
Check the lock’s model label, packaging, or installation paperwork, then find the matching Yale manual for your model and region. Yale publishes distinct instructions for products such as Assure deadbolts and Assure levers; their fasteners and procedures are not interchangeable. If you cannot confirm the model, do not guess at which screws or parts to remove.
Choose the task that matches what you need to do:
- Remove the complete lock from the door: Use the exact model’s installation or removal instructions. The available Yale guidance does not establish one complete procedure for all smart-lock families.
- Replace a keyed cylinder: Follow the cylinder procedure only if your lock is the compatible keyed Assure deadbolt described in Yale’s Assure keyed deadbolt manual.
- Remove a Yale Home Module: Follow the power-down guidance in Yale’s Home Module instructions.
- Remove the lock from your app or account: Use the factory-reset instructions for your model. This changes the lock’s digital configuration; it does not take the hardware off the door.
For whole-lock removal, use the exact model’s instructions
Yale’s Assure support guidance describes opening the interior side for cable troubleshooting, not a universal full-lock removal procedure. For that specific task, it says to remove the battery cover and four AA batteries, then remove three small black screws—two in the battery compartment and one at the base of the interior—to dismantle the interior side. Those details apply to the cited Assure troubleshooting context only; consult the installation manual for your exact lock before proceeding with complete removal. Use a tool that fits the fastener, and avoid forcing a stuck part. If the model is uncertain, wiring is damaged, or removal may affect the door or other hardware, contact Yale support or a qualified installer rather than improvising.

For a keyed Assure deadbolt, remove only the compatible cylinder
Yale’s keyed Assure deadbolt manual describes cylinder removal as a separate procedure. It applies to the cylinder design covered by that manual, not to every Yale smart lock.
- Remove the outside escutcheon and rubber gasket.
- Place a small flathead screwdriver beneath the cylinder’s retaining spring and gently lift the spring.
- Pull the cylinder outward. Its top notch engages with the spring.
To install a cylinder, the manual says to reverse the process. Before choosing a replacement, check the exact lock model, door thickness, and tailpiece dimensions in the manual; a cylinder that does not match may not fit or operate correctly. See Yale’s keyed Assure deadbolt manual.

To remove a Yale Home Module, cut power first
Yale’s Home Module guidance says to remove at least one battery before removing or reinserting the module. Wait approximately 10 seconds for the lock to power down, then remove the module. This is module-specific guidance, not a procedure for taking the entire lock off the door. Refer to Yale’s Home Module instructions for the applicable model.

If “remove” means deleting the lock’s digital ownership and configuration, use Yale’s factory-reset instructions for your model. Yale says a reset erases owner and guest data and removes the lock from associated owner and guest keychains. Disconnect a paired keypad before starting, as Yale’s Yale Home reset instructions direct.

A reset does not physically remove the lock. For the cited Assure keyed deadbolt, Yale’s manual says a factory reset deletes all user codes, including the Master Entry Code, and restores programming defaults. The manual also requires creating a Master Entry Code before further programming. Reset steps differ by model, so follow the instructions for your lock rather than applying a sequence from another Yale product.

- You cannot verify the lock’s exact model or find the matching regional manual.
- A screw, cylinder, module, or interior assembly will not move without force.
- You see damaged wiring or are unsure how removal affects the door hardware.
- You need a replacement cylinder but cannot confirm the required door thickness or tailpiece dimensions.
Yale’s cited examples are regional product pages from New Zealand and Australia. Hardware or instructions may vary by region, so use the manual for the lock actually installed on your door.
