How to remote play on Xbox is straightforward: enable Remote Features on an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, choose a standby power mode, then visit Xbox Remote Play in a supported browser. Sign in with the linked Microsoft account, connect a compatible controller, and select a game installed on your console.
Remote Play streams the game from your physical Xbox to another screen. The console remains the source of the game session, so Remote Play is different from Xbox Cloud Gaming, which runs games on Microsoft’s servers and does not require your console.
Key takeaways
- Xbox Remote Play supports Xbox One, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X consoles with Remote Features enabled.
- Xbox lists an internet connection of at least 10 Mbps and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data; that minimum does not guarantee low latency or sharp video.
- The current access method is the browser page at xbox.com/play/consoles, rather than looking for a Remote Play button in the mobile Xbox app.
- The Xbox must remain connected to power and the internet, with a power mode that permits remote connections or wake-up.
- Remote Play generally uses games installed or otherwise available on your own console; Xbox Cloud Gaming is a separate service.
How to remote play on Xbox
Follow these steps in order:
- Turn on the Xbox and sign in to the Xbox profile you want to use.
- Open Settings → Devices & connections → Remote features.
- Turn on Enable remote features.
- Run Test remote play, or the equivalent readiness test, if the console displays that option.
- Open Settings → General → Power options and choose a standby or sleep-style option that supports remote connections.
- On the phone, tablet, PC, smart TV, streaming device, or headset, open a supported browser and go to xbox.com/play/consoles.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the Xbox profile, select the console, connect a compatible controller, and choose an installed game.
Xbox’s current requirements include a supported Xbox console, an Xbox profile connected to a Microsoft account, and an internet connection of at least 10 Mbps. Xbox also recommends a compatible Bluetooth controller. Exact labels can vary slightly after Xbox dashboard updates or on Insider software.

Xbox Remote Play mirrors your own Xbox console on another supported screen. The Xbox runs the game, processes the gameplay, and sends the video and audio stream over the network; the phone, tablet, computer, TV, or headset receives the stream and sends controller input back to the console.

Remote Play can be useful in two situations:
- At home: You can play on a phone, tablet, laptop, or another screen while the Xbox and client device use the same home network.
- Away from home: You can connect over the internet if the Xbox remains reachable at home and the remote device has a stable connection.
Remote Play is designed to provide access to the console gaming experience rather than only a limited streaming catalog. Xbox describes the feature as playing games installed on the user’s console in its Remote Play information. The game still has to be available on the console, and individual titles can have disc, account, online-service, age, region, or subscription restrictions.
Which Xbox consoles support Remote Play?
Xbox currently lists the Xbox One family, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X as host consoles for Remote Play. An Xbox 360 or original Xbox cannot normally act as the direct Remote Play host. A backward-compatible Xbox 360 or original Xbox game may be playable when the game is running on a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series console, but the physical source console must still be supported.
| Host console | Can host Xbox Remote Play? | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X | Yes | Remote Features and a suitable power state are required. |
| Xbox Series S | Yes | The game must be digitally available because Series S has no disc drive. |
| Xbox One | Yes | Xbox notes that remote access depends on the console being on or in a compatible standby mode. |
| Xbox 360 | Not as the direct host listed for current Remote Play | An older game may still be playable if it runs on a supported Xbox One or Series console. |
| Original Xbox | Not as the direct host listed for current Remote Play | Backward compatibility does not turn the original console into a Remote Play host. |
Because device support and regional availability can change, check Xbox’s live Remote Play compatibility page before relying on a particular device.
Which phones, computers, TVs, and headsets can receive Remote Play?
Xbox’s published compatibility information includes Android devices running Android 6.0 or later, iPhone and iPad devices running iOS 15.1 or later, and Windows 10 or Windows 11 devices with version 22H2 or later. Xbox also lists supported browsers on PCs, phones, and tablets, supported Samsung and LG Smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV devices, and Meta Quest headsets.
| Client category | Published requirement or support | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Android phone or tablet | Android 6.0 or later | Browser, Bluetooth or wired controller support, and regional availability. |
| iPhone or iPad | iOS 15.1 or later | Use the browser Remote Play page; do not depend on a mobile-app Remote Play menu. |
| Windows PC | Windows 10/11, version 22H2 or later listed by Xbox | Use a supported, current browser and compatible controller. |
| Smart TV | Supported Samsung and LG Smart TVs | Model, app or browser availability, region, and controller pairing. |
| Amazon Fire TV | Supported Fire TV devices | Device generation, Xbox support in your region, and Bluetooth controller support. |
| Meta Quest | Supported Meta Quest headsets | Current headset software, browser behavior, and controller input. |
The list is not a permanent guarantee for every model or country. Xbox can change supported browsers, device categories, software versions, and regional availability, so the live Xbox device requirements are the final check.
Is the Xbox app required for Remote Play?
No. The current cross-device route is a browser: open xbox.com/play/consoles, sign in, and choose the console. Do not instruct yourself to find a Remote Play button inside the Xbox mobile app, because Xbox announced in April 2025 that mobile Remote Play access was moving to the web experience.
Older articles can be confusing because Xbox previously documented console streaming through the Xbox app on Windows. That older guidance remains useful historical context, but the current browser route is the safer starting point for phones and tablets and may also be the current route on other supported devices. Xbox’s April 2025 update announcement explains the move to browser-based access.

- Run the displayed remote-play test if Xbox offers one.
- Open General → Power options and select the available standby or sleep-style setting that permits remote access.
- Keep the console connected to power and the internet.
Microsoft identifies the Remote features area as the place to allow game-streaming connections in its Xbox game-streaming setup documentation. If the readiness test reports an error, fix the reported console or network issue before troubleshooting the phone or browser.
Does the Xbox need to stay on for Remote Play?
The Xbox must remain connected to power and the internet, but the Xbox does not necessarily need to remain visibly powered on. Remote access generally requires a standby or sleep-style power option that allows the console to respond to remote connections or wake remotely.
Open Settings → General → Power options and review the available choices. A full shutdown or energy-saving mode may prevent remote wake-up, depending on the console software and current power settings. Xbox specifically notes in its compatibility information that Xbox One Remote Play requires the console to be turned on or in an Instant-On-type mode. Do not assume that every power mode supports wake-up after a dashboard update.

Use the browser method on the receiving device:
- Open a current supported browser.
- Go to https://www.xbox.com/play/consoles.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account connected to the Xbox profile.
- Select the Xbox console when it appears.
- Allow sign-in redirects, cookies, pop-ups, or device permissions if the browser requests them.
- Connect the controller before starting the game.
- Select a game installed or otherwise available on the console.
On mobile devices, keep the browser in the foreground where possible. Switching apps, locking the screen, or allowing the browser to be suspended in the background can interrupt the stream. TV and headset browsers can also have less convenient sign-in and controller behavior than a phone or PC.
How do you connect an Xbox controller?
The safest default is a compatible Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth, which Xbox recommends for Remote Play. A wired USB controller can also work when the receiving device and browser support controller input.
- Put the controller into pairing mode using its Pair button.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the phone, tablet, PC, TV, or headset.
- Select Xbox Wireless Controller from the available devices.
- Return to the Remote Play browser session and test the buttons.
Pairing behavior can vary by controller generation. If the controller does not appear, disconnect it from the Xbox or another previously paired device, then retry. If Bluetooth input is unreliable, connect the controller by USB where supported. You can also update the controller through the Xbox Accessories app on a compatible device, although the Remote Play session itself is now accessed through the browser.
Touch controls may be available for some games and configurations, but touch input is not guaranteed for every Remote Play title or device. Xbox has previously documented touch controls for some Remote Play games in its February 2024 update information. A physical controller remains the most dependable choice.

At-home play is normally easier to troubleshoot because the Xbox and receiving device can use the same local network. Away-from-home play depends on both ends: the upload and stability of the internet connection where the Xbox is located and the download, latency, and stability of the remote connection. A weak cellular signal, crowded public Wi-Fi, captive-portal login, VPN, or restrictive network can prevent connection or cause lag. Mobile-data charges may apply when Remote Play uses cellular data.
What internet speed does Xbox Remote Play need?
Xbox lists at least 10 Mbps as an internet requirement and recommends a compatible 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection. The 10 Mbps figure is a baseline, not a promise of perfect video or responsive controls; latency, jitter, packet loss, signal strength, and wireless interference can matter as much as raw download speed. See Xbox’s current Remote Play requirements for the published minimum.
For the best practical setup:
- Connect the Xbox to the router by Ethernet when possible.
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the client when the device is reasonably close to the router.
- Move closer to the router if the wireless signal is weak.
- Pause large downloads, video streams, cloud backups, and other heavy network traffic.
- Avoid VPNs during testing because a VPN can add latency or interfere with connection routing.
- Test on another network if the problem only occurs on public Wi-Fi or cellular data.
Increasing bandwidth alone will not necessarily fix a blurry or delayed stream if the real problem is packet loss, interference, or high latency.
Do you need Xbox Game Pass for Remote Play?
No, Xbox Game Pass is not universally required just to stream your own console through Remote Play. Xbox says that some games and online multiplayer may require Xbox Game Pass, while the subscription is sold separately.
Separate these questions before subscribing:
- Can the game run on your console? You need access to the game on the Xbox, such as ownership or another valid license, and some disc-based games require the disc to be inserted.
- Does the game require online multiplayer access? The game’s online features can have separate Xbox subscription requirements.
- Are you trying to use Cloud Gaming? Cloud Gaming is a separate service generally tied to an eligible Game Pass plan and does not use your physical Xbox as the host.
- Does the title impose another restriction? Account, region, age, online-service, or game-specific requirements can still apply.
Do not buy Game Pass merely to turn on Remote Play. Check the specific game and whether you need online multiplayer or Cloud Gaming. Xbox’s official Game Pass page is the appropriate place to verify current plans and availability.
What is the difference between Xbox Remote Play and Cloud Gaming?
Xbox Remote Play streams from your own physical console, while Xbox Cloud Gaming streams from Microsoft’s servers. Remote Play requires a supported Xbox; Cloud Gaming does not.
| Decision point | Xbox Remote Play | Xbox Cloud Gaming |
|---|---|---|
| Where the game runs | On your Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S | On Microsoft’s cloud servers |
| Is an Xbox console required? | Yes | No |
| Must the game be installed on your console? | Generally yes, or otherwise available on the console | No local console installation is required |
| What can you play? | Games available through your own console and account | Supported titles in the available cloud catalog |
| Subscription relationship | Remote Play itself is not automatically the same as Cloud Gaming; game and multiplayer rules may apply | Usually associated with an eligible Game Pass plan |
| Network dependency | Internet quality matters at the console and the client device | Internet quality matters primarily between the client and Microsoft’s service |
Choose Remote Play when you want access to your own console’s games and already have a supported Xbox. Choose Cloud Gaming when you want to stream supported titles without leaving a console running or without owning an Xbox.

“I cannot find Remote Play in the Xbox app”
This usually means the instructions are outdated. Xbox announced that mobile Remote Play access was moving from the app to the web experience in April 2025. Open xbox.com/play/consoles in a supported browser instead.
The console does not appear in the browser
Verify the Microsoft account first, then check Remote Features, internet connectivity, and the console’s power mode. Restart the console after changing the setting. If the console still does not appear, update the browser and Xbox software, and check whether cookies, pop-ups, or sign-in redirects are blocked.
Remote Play starts but disconnects
Disconnects commonly point to unstable Wi-Fi, cellular fluctuations, congestion, VPN routing, or a problem at either end of an away-from-home connection. Use Ethernet for the console, 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the client, stop competing downloads and streams, remove the VPN, restart the router and devices, and test on another network.
The video is blurry or delayed
Blurry video and delayed controls can result from weak Wi-Fi, congested wireless channels, high latency, packet loss, cellular instability, or an underpowered or incompatible browser device. A faster internet plan may not solve the problem if the connection remains unstable.
The controller connects but does not respond
Reconnect the controller by USB if possible, re-pair it over Bluetooth, disconnect it from another device, and update it through the Xbox Accessories app. Some TVs and browsers support fewer controller features than phones or PCs.
A game will not launch
A game may fail to launch because it is not installed or available on the console, requires an inserted disc, needs online services or a subscription, or has a device, region, age, or account restriction. Remote Play does not guarantee that every Xbox game will work in every account and console state.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the best setup for low-latency Xbox Remote Play?
The strongest general setup is an Xbox connected by Ethernet, a receiving device using 5 GHz Wi-Fi near the router, and a compatible controller connected with a stable Bluetooth or wired connection. Reducing competing network traffic is often more effective than buying a more expensive controller.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor phone or tablet play, an existing compatible Xbox controller is sufficient. A phone clamp or dedicated mobile controller is optional and should be chosen for device fit, connection type, comfort, and charging convenience—not as a cure for poor internet latency. Readers who do not already own an Xbox should compare the cost and purpose of buying a console with Cloud Gaming or PC gaming instead; buying an Xbox solely for Remote Play may not be the best value.

Can someone else use the TV while I Remote Play?
Yes, Remote Play sends the Xbox’s game session to the receiving device, so the TV does not have to be the screen used for playing. However, the Xbox itself still runs the session, and another person using the console, changing profiles, launching another game, or interrupting the network can end or disrupt Remote Play.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I Remote Play on an iPhone without the Xbox app?
Yes. Use a supported browser on an iPhone running iOS 15.1 or later and open xbox.com/play/consoles. Sign in with the Microsoft account linked to the Xbox, select the console, and connect a compatible controller.
Can I use Xbox Remote Play outside my house?
Yes. Remote Play can work outside the home when the Xbox has Remote Features enabled, remains connected to power and the internet, and uses a suitable standby power mode. The remote device also needs a stable internet connection, and performance depends on both connections.
Does Xbox Remote Play require Game Pass?
No, Game Pass is not automatically required for Remote Play from your own console. Some games, online multiplayer features, and Xbox Cloud Gaming use cases may require an eligible subscription, so check the specific game and activity.
Can I Remote Play without leaving the Xbox fully turned on?
Usually, the Xbox can use a standby or sleep-style power mode that allows remote connections or wake-up. A full shutdown or energy-saving mode may prevent remote access, so check Settings → General → Power options on the console.
Why did Remote Play disappear from the Xbox mobile app?
Xbox announced in April 2025 that mobile Remote Play access was moving to the web experience. Open xbox.com/play/consoles in a supported browser instead of looking for the feature in the mobile Xbox app.
The Bottom Line
Xbox Remote Play works by streaming games from your own Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. Enable Remote Features, choose a remote-capable power mode, use the browser page at xbox.com/play/consoles, and connect a compatible controller. For reliable play, use Ethernet for the console and 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the receiving device when possible.
