In Kenya, register a work through the Kenya Copyright Board’s (KECOBO) National Rights Registry (NRR), then check KECOBO’s current notices to identify a licensed collective management organization (CMO) for the particular right and use you want to claim. The registry records ownership details; it is not a substitute for a CMO’s administration or a guarantee of royalty payment.
Where to register music in Kenya
KECOBO’s National Rights Registry is the starting point for recording ownership details. The registry describes itself as a central repository where rights holders can register works and view or download certificates; music is among its listed work types. It supports individual and corporate accounts.
KECOBO also says copyright registration and CMO licensing are among its functions, and that its services are available online through eCitizen. Its eCitizen service description says: “The Board carries out public awareness, enforcement, registration of copyright, licensing of collective management organisation and education on matters of copyright and related rights.”

- Open KECOBO’s National Rights Registry portal and choose the account type that fits you: individual or corporate.
- Use the live application to register the work. Follow its current instructions for fields, supporting evidence, fees and submission; those details can change and should not be assumed from a general guide.
- Make sure the title and contributor identities are accurate, and agree and record ownership shares with collaborators. Keep the agreements that support those shares alongside your registration records.
- After registration, retain the certificate or download it from the registry if available. Keep it with your contributor agreements and other records.
KECOBO’s copyright FAQ search-result extract describes a broader intended system for recording works, participants and share ratios, monitoring use, distributing royalties received, issuing beneficiary statements and managing tax deductions. That describes the system’s stated design; it does not establish that every feature is currently operating or that registering a work triggers payment.

What the registry does—and what a CMO does
A registry and a CMO solve different problems. Registering a work helps record who says they own it and in what shares. A CMO, where currently licensed and acting within its mandate, administers specified rights and may license uses, collect royalties and distribute money to members or beneficiaries. A registry certificate alone does not show that a CMO has licensed a use, received money for it or paid a particular creator.
| Question | KECOBO and the NRR | A CMO |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | KECOBO is the regulator; the NRR is a repository for work and ownership information. | Administers rights and handles licensing or royalty collection within its current appointment or licence. |
| What it can help establish | Work registration and an ownership certificate, according to the NRR’s description. | Whether a particular right and use fall within the organization’s current scope, and how it handles members’ royalty claims. |
| Does it guarantee payment? | No. Registration is not proof of usage, collection or payment. | No. A claim depends on the right, use, repertoire, applicable licence and the organization’s processes. |
| What to verify | Current application requirements and certificate details. | Current KECOBO licence, covered rights and uses, membership or claim requirements, statements and dispute or correction channels. |
How to choose the right royalty route
Do not assume one organization collects every royalty connected with a song or recording. Start by identifying the specific work, the right involved, and how it was used. Then confirm that the CMO you are considering is currently licensed for that right and use.

- Identify the right and the work. Be precise about whether your claim concerns a song or composition, a sound recording, or another covered interest. Different participants may have different ownership shares and royalty interests.
- Identify the use. A claim about a digital platform, broadcast, public performance or another use may be treated differently. Do not infer that coverage of one type of use means coverage of all uses.
- Check the current KECOBO notice or register. Verify the CMO’s licence status, the right categories it covers and the term of the licence before joining or submitting a claim.
- Ask the CMO how claims work. Confirm repertoire or membership requirements, what information it needs, how it reports distributions, and how to correct a missing or inaccurate entry. These details are organization- and licence-specific.
What public reporting does—and does not—establish
PAVRISK’s own licensing page says it grants permissions, collects royalties and enforces rights on behalf of members, and describes online digital platforms among the users it targets. Treat that as PAVRISK’s description of its work, not independent confirmation of its present KECOBO licence or of coverage for a particular claim.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKenya Broadcasting Corporation reported on October 21, 2025 that KECOBO had renewed PAVRISK’s licence and that KAMP Copyright and Related Rights Ltd had been licensed to manage sound-recording-producer royalties for one year effective November 5, 2025. That dated report is not a substitute for checking KECOBO’s current licensing notice when you act. MCSK’s continuing public website likewise does not establish its current licence: KECOBO’s 2021 deregistration release is historical, and later decisions may supersede it.

Prepare a royalty claim and keep an audit trail
Organized ownership records make it easier to explain who contributed to a work and what share each person claims. Keep a consistent file for each work, whether you are a songwriter, performer, producer, manager or company.
- Work title and any alternate or release titles used in your records.
- Contributor names and agreed ownership shares, supported by signed agreements where applicable.
- NRR registration confirmation and certificate, if issued.
- CMO membership or claim correspondence, usage information you have, and royalty statements.
- Payment records and any correspondence about corrections or disputed shares.
These are practical record-keeping measures, not a statement of documents the NRR or any CMO requires. Check the relevant live application and organization directly for its current evidence, payment and correction procedures.

Verify current rules before you submit
CMO licensing, rights scopes and terms can change. The latest detailed licensing report cited here dates to 2025; it cannot by itself establish which organizations are licensed in October 2026 or what each currently covers. Before registering, joining or claiming, check KECOBO’s latest official CMO licensing information and confirm details with the organization handling the claim. Verify current NRR requirements, fees, processing times and payment information rather than relying on old notices or a CMO’s website alone.
