Refresh a seasonal page when you can make it more useful—not simply to change its date. Use its Search Console performance and current audience interests to identify what needs attention, update the substance, keep publication dates truthful, and measure results against comparable periods. Google does not promise that a refresh will improve rankings or traffic.
Decide whether the page needs a refresh
Start with the page’s own performance and the questions it currently answers. In Google Search Console, review the page’s queries, clicks, impressions, and positions. Where data allows, compare equivalent seasonal periods rather than treating an ordinary off-season decline as evidence of a problem.
Look for signs the page no longer serves readers: outdated dates or offers, stale links, recommendations that have changed, or queries that reveal a different need than the page addresses. Google Trends can provide context about shifts in interest and the language people use. Use that context alongside Search Console data; interest trends are not a substitute for evaluating the page itself. Google describes Trends as a resource for understanding how people find information in Search and for informing content strategy (Google Trends guide).
- Refresh: The page has useful material, but specific information is outdated, incomplete, hard to navigate, or misaligned with current questions.
- Keep it as is: The page remains accurate and helpful, and you cannot identify a reader-focused improvement.
- Consider removing it only as a last resort: Google advises trying to improve useful content rather than deleting it; removal is appropriate when the content cannot be salvaged (Google’s helpful-content guidance).
Update the substance, not just the date
Review every time-sensitive claim, date, recommendation, link, and example. Correct or replace anything that is no longer accurate, and restructure or rewrite material when that makes it easier to read and navigate. A meaningful refresh may involve clarifying the answer to a common question, removing obsolete instructions, or making the page’s organization easier to scan.
#1 Best Overall
Do not make cosmetic edits just to signal freshness. Google recommends meaningful improvements and cautions against quick fixes intended to make a site appear fresh. A change is worth publishing when it improves accuracy, completeness, readability, or navigation for the reader (Google’s helpful-content guidance).
Use publication dates honestly
If the page displays a “Published” or “Last updated” date, change it only when the page was actually published or significantly updated. Do not use the holiday’s date as the update date, and do not put a future date on the page. Keep the visible date consistent with structured date values. Google may choose whether to show a date in Search, so accurate date markup does not guarantee that a date will appear (Google’s byline-date guidance).

Measure changes against the seasonal cycle
Record what changed and when, then compare relevant page and query performance across suitable periods. Account for the recurring seasonal pattern: a page’s search demand can change as the holiday approaches and recedes, so a comparison with a different point in the cycle can mislead. Review the queries and pages affected, not just one overall traffic figure.

If a decline coincides with a suspected Google core update, check the Search Status Dashboard for rollout dates. Google recommends waiting at least a full week after the rollout completes before analyzing Search Console data, then reviewing affected pages and queries. Avoid drastic reactions to small position changes; Search positions are not fixed (Google’s core updates guidance).

Set realistic expectations for timing and traffic
There is no universal holiday-content refresh deadline or guaranteed traffic lift. Google says some improvements may be reflected in Search within days, while others can take several months; it also makes no guarantee of a noticeable impact. Its guidance does not establish a season-specific lead time for refreshing a page, so plan around your own publishing needs rather than promising that an edit will rank by a particular date (Google’s core updates guidance).
Google also tries to avoid releasing updates during the late-November to mid-December period when possible, but says it cannot always do so. In a November 2, 2023 Q&A, Google Search liaison Danny Sullivan said: “We do try to avoid having updates during the late-November to mid-December period when possible. But it’s not always possible.” If performance changes around a holiday, check the rollout information and assess the specific pages and queries rather than assuming the edit or an update caused the change (Google Search updates Q&A).
