Refactor a task tracker by moving task data and rules out of UI controls, putting bindable screen state and user actions in a view model, and leaving layout and visual behavior in the view. Do it one action at a time: a full rewrite, repository layer, or MVVM toolkit is not a prerequisite.
What MVVM changes in a task tracker
MVVM stands for Model-View-ViewModel. Microsoft defines it as a UI architectural pattern that “decouples UI and non-UI code” (Microsoft Learn: Windows data binding and MVVM). In practical terms, controls display state and pass user intent along; they should not be the only place task rules live.
| Part | What it owns | Task-tracker examples |
|---|---|---|
| Model or domain | Business data and core rules | A task’s title, completion status, and rules for whether or how it can be completed. |
| View | Display structure and UI-specific behavior | The task list layout, buttons, text fields, and control-specific visual interactions. |
| View model | Bindable screen state and actions that coordinate with model or service code | Selected task, visible ordering, input text, and add, complete, or delete actions. |
These are responsibilities, not necessarily three projects or even three classes. A very small app may not need a separate model layer; Microsoft’s guidance allows simple projects to keep the necessary data in the view model. The right boundary is the one that removes harmful coupling without adding ceremony.

What belongs in each layer
Keep task rules independent of controls
Task behavior should not depend on a button, list item, or window existing. For example, the decision to mark a task complete is task behavior. If the UI control’s click handler directly changes several fields, updates other controls, and persists the task, those responsibilities are tangled together. Move the rule or operation into domain/application logic where appropriate, and let the view model invoke it.

Let the view model describe the screen
The view model exposes the state the view needs and actions the user can request. For a task list, that can include the tasks currently shown, which task is selected, the current add-task input, and a command or action for completing a task. Presentation-only state, such as a display ordering or active filter, can reasonably live here because it describes how this screen presents data rather than a rule intrinsic to a task.
Keep visual details in the view
Layout, styling, focus, animation, and behavior that only makes sense for a particular control remain view concerns. MVVM does not require deleting all code-behind. Code-behind can still handle view-specific behavior; the goal is to keep task logic from becoming dependent on the UI.

Refactor incrementally, starting with one action
- Choose a user action. Start with a contained operation such as completing one task, rather than trying to move every screen concern at once.
- Trace what happens today. Find the event handler and identify which statements manipulate controls, which represent task rules, which change screen state, and which perform storage or network I/O.
- Move task decisions out of the handler. Put the task rule in domain/application code when it is meaningful beyond the screen. If the app is simple, avoid creating a separate model layer solely to satisfy a diagram.
- Expose the action through the view model. The view model should coordinate the operation and expose an action the UI can invoke. Bind the relevant control to it where the framework supports binding; otherwise, make the UI-to-view-model call explicit.
- Move screen state into bindable properties. Put state such as selection or the add-task input in the view model when it needs to be shared with or reflected by the view. Ensure changes notify the UI so it refreshes.
- Repeat where it helps. Apply the same approach to adding, editing, deleting, filtering, and selection when the move improves separation or testability. Leave purely visual behavior in the view.
This sequence applies whether the app uses XAML, another UI framework, or a custom interface. The specific binding syntax and command mechanism depend on that framework.

Binding a view model to a view is not enough if the view is never told that a value changed. Bindable state must provide change notifications through the mechanism expected by the UI framework. Without that, an action may update the underlying task while the displayed list remains stale.

In .NET, Microsoft documents the CommunityToolkit.Mvvm source generators [ObservableProperty] and [RelayCommand] as options for generating change-notifying properties and command implementations. They are conveniences for .NET projects, not requirements or the definition of MVVM. See Microsoft’s Windows data-binding guidance and .NET MVVM guidance.
Handle persistence without freezing the interface
If completing or adding a task also writes to a file, database, or network service, that I/O belongs behind the view model’s coordination rather than in a control handler. Microsoft’s .NET MVVM guidance recommends asynchronous view-model operations for I/O so the UI thread can remain responsive. The exact storage abstraction and error handling depend on the app; a task tracker with no persistence does not need a repository or service just to use MVVM.

Check whether the refactor is improving the design
- Control coupling: Can you locate task rules without searching through UI event handlers?
- Independent testing: Can you exercise task behavior without constructing UI controls? Separating application logic makes this possible, though it does not automatically make every view model easy to test.
- Reliable updates: Do changes to view-model state raise the notifications the view needs, and do UI actions reach the intended command or operation?
- Reuse needs: Would more than one screen or UI variant benefit from sharing the same task behavior?
- Proportionate structure: Does each new class or abstraction solve a real separation, reuse, or testability problem? If not, keep the design smaller.
Microsoft describes maintainability and testability as benefits of separating application logic from UI, while also recognizing that simple single-page tools and prototypes can start with code-behind and adopt MVVM as complexity grows (Windows data binding and MVVM; .NET MVVM).
What not to add by default
MVVM does not prescribe a particular persistence system, dependency-injection container, navigation framework, or service architecture. Add those only when the app’s actual requirements justify them. Likewise, a toolkit can reduce repetitive notification and command code in .NET, but a different framework may provide its own mechanisms, and a small tracker may need no extra package at all.
