For respiratory infections such as COVID-19 and seasonal influenza, the most practical approach is to layer precautions: stay home when you are sick, improve indoor airflow, avoid crowded or poorly ventilated places when risk is higher, use a well-fitting mask in relevant situations, clean your hands, cover coughs and sneezes, and follow vaccination guidance for your disease and circumstances. These steps reduce risk; none guarantees that you will avoid infection.
Transmission routes differ between diseases, so this advice is strongest for respiratory infections and is not a universal prevention plan. Choose measures according to the pathogen, your health and risk, the setting, local conditions, and current public-health guidance.
How do these precautions work together?
WHO presents respiratory-disease prevention as a package rather than a choice between single solutions. Some measures reduce your exposure to infectious particles; others reduce the particles you may release around other people or lower the risk of severe illness. Which combination makes sense depends on the disease, setting, exposure, and personal circumstances.

- Reduce transmission to others: stay home when sick, cover coughs and sneezes, and consider a well-fitting mask when around others.
- Support prevention: clean hands and follow disease-specific vaccination recommendations.
WHO’s COVID-19 questions and answers describes layered precautions including ventilation, masks, avoiding crowds, distance, hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette, and vaccination.
#1 Best Overall
- NIOSH APPROVED: For at least 95 percent filtration efficiency against certain non-oil based particles
- COMPATIBLE: With a variety of protective eyewear and hearing protection
- ADJUSTABLE NOSECLIP: Reduces potential for eyewear fogging and helps provide a custom and secure seal
- TWO-STRAP DESIGN: With welded dual point attachement that helps provide a secure fit
- APPLICATIONS: Gringing, sanding, sweeping, bagging, and other dusty operations. Metalworking, chemical processing, construction, and metal processing
What should you do if you feel sick?
If you have COVID-19 symptoms or test positive, WHO advises staying home and away from other people. Its influenza guidance also identifies voluntary self-isolation and mask use by symptomatic or positive people as ways to reduce transmission. Follow current local and disease-specific guidance, since isolation instructions and their duration are not the same for every infection.
If you cannot avoid an interaction, reduce exposure where possible: wear a well-fitting mask, avoid crowded or poorly ventilated places, and keep the interaction as limited as circumstances allow. WHO’s COVID-19 fact sheet advises people with symptoms to stay home and away from others.
Rank #2
- NIOSH-APPROVED N95 for at least 95 percent filtration efficiency against certain non-oil-based particles and aerosols
- USE FOR: Sanding, drywall cutting, sweeping, sawing, woodworking, fiberglass insulating, yard work, grinding and dusting

- 3M COOL FLOW VALVE helps release warm, exhaled breath from inside the respirator
- UP TO 50% EASIER BREATHING Compared to 3M 8200
How can you improve indoor airflow?
Opening windows or doors can bring outdoor air inside and help dilute infectious respiratory particles. When possible, open windows on opposite sides of a room or building to create a cross-breeze. If that is not practical, WHO says a fan placed in front of an open window can help move indoor air outside.

Rank #3
- NIOSH-APPROVED N95 for at least 95 percent filtration efficiency against certain non-oil-based particles and aerosols
- 3M COOL FLOW EXHALATION VALVE helps direct exhaled air downward and allows for easy breathing
- UP TO 50% EASIER BREATHING. Compared to non-valved 3M 8200 Testing
- ADVANCED FILTER MEDIA for easy breathing
- ADJUSTABLE M-NOSECLIP helps provide a custom and secure seal
When is wearing a mask useful?
A well-fitting mask can reduce the infectious particles a person inhales or exhales. Consider wearing one in crowded or poorly ventilated indoor spaces, or when you are ill and must be around others. The value of masking depends on the disease, the setting, local guidance, and your circumstances; it works as part of a broader prevention approach rather than a guarantee of protection.
WHO’s mask guidance explains the role of masks in reducing respiratory-particle spread. Check current local and disease-specific recommendations for when and how to use one.

- 3M 9205+ Aura N95 Particulate Respirator Masks filter certain airborne particles such as dust & debris, smoke & smog particles, cough & sneezing debris, and other particulates.
- Using 3M's proprietary Advanced Electret Media, dust and other airborne particles are filtered and breathed without difficulty.
- The 3M 9205+ Aura N95 Particulate Respirator Mask features a comfortable top panel to prevent eyewear from fogging.
How should you clean your hands and cover coughs?
Clean your hands frequently with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub. When coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth and nose with a bent elbow or a tissue; dispose of the tissue and clean your hands afterward. WHO includes both hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette in its COVID-19 prevention advice.

These practices are useful components of respiratory-virus prevention, but the guidance cited here does not establish surface disinfection as the central measure for preventing respiratory infections. The WHO COVID-19 fact sheet names soap and water or alcohol-based hand rub for hand cleaning.

Which vaccinations should you keep current?
Vaccination advice is specific to the disease, age, health status, location, and season. WHO describes seasonal influenza vaccination as the best way to reduce the risk of getting flu and prevent severe illness. It recommends annual influenza vaccination for health care workers, pregnant women, older adults, and people with chronic medical conditions; eligibility and schedules can vary by location and season.
For other diseases, check recommendations that apply to you rather than assuming the influenza schedule or eligibility applies. WHO’s influenza prevention Q&A gives its flu-specific advice.
How do you decide which measures matter most?
There is no single comparable effectiveness ranking across the measures covered here. WHO’s public-health guidance emphasizes context-sensitive decisions, including equity, acceptability, feasibility, resource needs, and socioeconomic effects. Use these practical questions to tailor your approach:
- How does the infection spread? Respiratory precautions are most relevant to infections transmitted through respiratory particles; other routes may require different measures.
- What is the exposure? Consider whether the setting is indoors, crowded, poorly ventilated, and shared for a sustained period.
- Who may be affected? Personal health and the risk to people around you can change which precautions are appropriate.
- What is practical and accessible? Choose measures you can use consistently, while following local guidance and current disease conditions.
WHO’s 2026 guideline on public-health and social measures for epidemic and pandemic influenza, published 23 April 2026, describes context-sensitive decision-making. Because local recommendations and outbreak conditions can change, consult current public-health advice for your location and circumstances.
