Steam does not provide a general setting that compresses installed games. To free space, check whether a specific game has optional language files or installed DLC you do not need, or move games to a library on another drive. Update settings can defer downloads but will not shrink files already installed.
Choose the fix that matches your storage problem

Change when Steam updates a game
To manage one game’s automatic updates, open it in your Library, open its Manage or Properties menu, and select Updates. Steam offers “Always keep this game updated,” “Only update this game when I launch it,” and “High Priority – Always auto-update this game before others.” The launch-time option can defer an update, but Steam will require a needed update when you launch the game. For queued or active downloads, use Steam’s Download Manager. It lets you manage active downloads, reorder queued items, and schedule download windows. Scheduling or reprioritizing can help control when updates use bandwidth; it does not remove game files or reduce an update’s data size.

Check whether the game has optional language files
If a game supports multiple languages, open its Library entry, choose Properties > Language, and select the language you want. Steam notes that language files may need to be downloaded. Availability and file behavior depend on the individual game; Steam’s guidance does not establish that switching languages will always remove previously downloaded files. Review installed DLC for that game
Open the game’s Library page or Properties menu and look for its DLC section. It shows owned downloadable content and whether it is installed. If the game offers a way to uninstall a particular item, consider whether you still need it before removing it. The available content and its storage impact vary by title, and Steam’s guidance does not quantify how much space any DLC uses. Steam Support: Find Downloadable Content (DLC) for My Games
Move games off a full drive
If another drive has room, add a Steam library there and move selected games. This makes room on the original drive while preserving the installations on the destination drive; it does not compress the games or reduce their combined storage footprint.

- In Steam, open Settings > Storage and add a library location on the drive with available space.
- Select the drive and the games you want to relocate.
- Use Steam’s Move option to transfer them to the new library.

Do not clear the download cache to shrink installed games
Clearing Steam’s download cache is a troubleshooting step for download or launch problems, not a way to reclaim the storage used by installed games. Find out why drive space is disappearing
If free space falls after you play, the game download itself may not be the only cause. Steam lists updates, saved-game files, and multiplayer custom content as possible reasons available disk space can decrease. Check the drive’s actual usage and the game’s content before deleting files; avoid removing files from a Steam installation manually unless you know what they are.
