You can often make phone photos smaller without an obvious difference at normal viewing size, but lossy compression cannot guarantee that no image data or detail is lost. For future shots, choose HEIF/HEIC if your camera and the people or apps receiving your photos support it. For an existing photo, export a smaller copy and keep the original if you may need to edit or crop it later. If you need more free space on your phone, treat cloud backup and removing local copies as a separate storage-management decision.
First, identify what you want to make smaller
“Photo size” can mean the bytes in one image, the pixel dimensions of that image, or the space your whole photo library occupies on the phone. Those are related, but changing one does not always change the others.
- A smaller file to send or upload: Export a compressed copy, or use a more efficient format if the recipient supports it.
- Smaller files for photos you take from now on: Change the camera format, or reduce the capture resolution if you can accept fewer pixels.
- More free space on the phone: Back up photos and, only when you understand the service’s rules and have verified the backup, consider removing local copies. A cloud backup setting does not by itself shrink the original stored on your phone.
Choose the right trade-off
These methods affect different versions of a photo. A more efficient format can reduce file size without changing pixel dimensions; lowering resolution removes pixels; lossy compression can discard image information; and a cloud service may alter the backed-up copy without altering the local original.
| Method | What it changes | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capture in HEIF/HEIC | Format of new photos; pixel dimensions can remain the same | Smaller new files when the camera and recipients support the format | Some older devices, apps, and upload forms may need JPEG instead |
| Reduce capture resolution | Pixel count of new photos | Routine shots that do not need heavy cropping or large prints | Less cropping and enlargement latitude |
| Export a compressed copy | Format and/or image data in the exported copy | Sharing or uploading an existing image | Lossy compression may remove detail; retain the original if it matters |
| Use cloud backup storage settings | The backed-up copy, according to the service’s rules | Managing a photo library and potentially freeing device capacity | Does not necessarily shrink or replace the phone’s local original |
Use HEIF/HEIC for smaller future photos when compatible
File format can affect size even when the image has the same pixel dimensions. Apple says HEIF offers better compression than JPEG while preserving the same visual quality, and Android Open Source Project documentation describes HEIC as capable of better quality at smaller file sizes than JPEG. These are general format comparisons, not a promise that every HEIC photo will be smaller than every JPEG photo.

Apple’s 2019 WWDC presentation illustrated HEIC files as 50 percent smaller than JPEG at comparable quality. That is Apple’s illustrative comparison, not a guaranteed saving for a particular photo, phone, or current configuration. Apple Developer: Optimizing Storage in Your App — WWDC19.
On iPhone
- Open Settings > Camera > Formats.
- Choose High Efficiency to capture in HEIF on supported devices. Choose Most Compatible if JPEG compatibility with older devices, apps, or upload services matters more.
- Check that the people and services you share with can open the resulting files. If not, export or convert a copy to JPEG for those destinations.

On Android
Some Android camera implementations support HEIC, which Android’s camera documentation describes as an efficient image format. There is no single Android menu path that applies to every phone: setting names and availability depend on the manufacturer and model. Look for your model’s camera-format settings or consult its maker’s documentation rather than assuming a particular toggle exists. The Android Open Source Project HEIF documentation describes platform and camera-stream support, not a universal consumer-facing setting.

On supported iPhone models, Apple documents a choice between 24 MP and 12 MP for the default Main or Fusion camera Photo Mode. To change it, open Settings > Camera > Formats > Photo Mode and select 12 MP. Exact options vary by model and iOS version; use the choices shown on your phone. - 【OTG Function】:Support nearly all mobile phones which support OTG function, and very easy to operate
Choosing 12 MP reduces the image’s pixel count. That can be sensible for everyday viewing and sharing, but it leaves less room to crop or print large than a higher-resolution capture. It is not a way to retain all the detail in a 24 MP source while making the file smaller.
Make a smaller copy of an existing photo
For a photo already in your library, preserve the original and work from an exported copy when possible. The copy can use HEIF/HEIC if the destination accepts it, or JPEG when broad compatibility matters more. A photo app’s export or compression feature may also offer a quality control; use a conservative setting and inspect the result rather than relying on a universal slider number. No single quality percentage is established as safe for every phone image, app, and use.

- Choose the destination first: messaging, a web form, an email attachment, or a print may impose different file-size or compatibility needs.
- Export or compress a copy, not the only version you have, if you might later want the original for editing.
- Check the exported file’s size and pixel dimensions. A smaller byte count does not tell you by itself how much visible detail remains.
- View the copy at its ordinary display size and inspect the intended crop or print size. If fine texture, edges, or text look worse at that size, export again with less compression or keep the original.
Lossy compression can make a file smaller by discarding image information, even when the difference is hard to see on a phone screen. Avoid repeatedly opening and resaving a lossy copy; keep the source and make the final export from it.

Google Photos offers Original quality and Storage saver backup choices. Google says Storage saver compresses photos and resizes photos larger than 16 MP to 16 MP; some files are not eligible for compression. These rules apply to the backed-up media, not automatically to the local original on your phone. Google Photos also provides backup details so you can check how an item was stored. - EXPAND YOUR STORAGE. Easily move files off your device, freeing up valuable space so you can store your favorite photos, movies, music, games, and more.
- Say goodbye to emailing photos between devices. Once they’re on your SanDisk Phone Drive, read speeds up to 100MB/s let you transfer files fast. (1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors. USB Type-C port with USB 3.2 Gen 1 support required.)
- AUTOMATIC BACKUP. Automatically back up your latest photos, videos, music, documents, and contacts with the SanDisk Memory Zone app. (Download and installation required. Set up automatic backup within app settings. See official SanDisk website for Memory Zone details.)
- DATA RECOVERY. Recover deleted files with the included RescuePRO Deluxe software.(Registration and download required; terms and conditions apply. See RescuePRO page on SanDisk site.)
- CONVENIENT DESIGN. Attach your drive to your keyring to help keep it secure so you can have storage wherever you are, whenever you need it.
If your goal is device capacity, confirm that the photos have backed up and understand the app’s process before removing local copies. Storage saver may change the backed-up version, while deleting a device copy is a separate action. Do not assume a cloud setting has compressed or replaced the file still stored on the phone.
Skip ProRAW when file size is the priority
Apple ProRAW is intended to retain more image information for editing, not to create compact files. Apple says ProRAW photos retain more information and therefore have larger file sizes. For the supported models Apple describes, approximate examples are 25 MB at 12 MP and 75 MB at 48 MP; Apple also says ProRAW files can be 10–12 times larger than HEIF or JPEG. Those are approximate ProRAW figures, not typical sizes for ordinary HEIF/JPEG photos. See About Apple ProRAW.
