Start by finding where your home is losing energy or causing discomfort, then address the largest problems first. A home energy assessment, draft sealing and insulation, thermostat scheduling that fits your routine, and regular HVAC maintenance can reduce wasted energy without asking you to live in an uncomfortable home. The right combination depends on your building, climate, equipment, and household habits.

Start with your bills and the rooms that feel wrong

Before buying equipment or changing settings, review several utility bills and note when costs rise. Pair that information with a simple comfort check: which rooms are drafty, persistently too hot or cold, humid, or hard to heat? Also note noisy equipment, frequent repairs, or rooms that never reach the temperature shown by the thermostat.

A home energy assessment can help connect those symptoms to the right fixes. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) describes evaluations ranging from a walk-through to diagnostic methods such as an infrared camera or blower door. Utility bills can help the assessor identify major energy users. Ask your utility or state energy office about local assessment options.

DOE’s Energy Saver page, published November 18, 2014, estimated that Americans spent an average of $2,000 a year on energy and that $200 to $400 might be wasted through drafts, air leaks, and outdated heating and cooling systems. Those are broad historical estimates, not a prediction for an individual home or a current average bill. See the DOE Energy Saver guidance and its home energy assessment checklist for the assessment approach.

Seal drafts and improve insulation where they matter

Air leaks and thin or missing insulation can make rooms uncomfortable while allowing conditioned air to escape. DOE recommends checking around floors, walls, ceilings, windows, doors, and fireplaces, as well as relevant areas such as attics, crawl spaces, basements, and walls. Sealing leaks and insulating the building envelope work together; simply turning up the heat may not address the source of a cold room.

For a small DIY job, use the right material for the joint. Weatherstripping is intended for movable joints, such as the edges of an operable door or window. Caulk is appropriate for certain fixed gaps. Measure and inspect the surface before choosing a product: a generic weatherstripping kit will not suit every frame or gap. DOE’s renter guidance discusses these options and notes that some work, including sealing heating and cooling ducts, is better left to professionals.

Do not treat “tighter” as a reason to ignore ventilation or combustion safety. If a project could affect ventilation, fuel-burning appliances, or indoor air quality, discuss the plan with a qualified professional. DOE’s Building Science Education page states, “A tight air-sealed home reduces leaks and air movement and improves energy and comfort.” That benefit depends on doing the work appropriately for the home; see Tight Air-Sealed Homes.

Use thermostat schedules people can live with

Program a thermostat around when people are home, asleep, or away. In winter, choose the lowest temperature the household finds comfortable; in summer, choose the highest comfortable setting. Use setbacks while the home is empty or occupants are asleep when practical, rather than making a setting so extreme that people override it or feel uncomfortable.

DOE’s current home-upgrades guidance says a 7–10°F setback for eight hours a day may save as much as 10% a year on heating and cooling. This is a general potential, not a guaranteed bill reduction. DOE’s separate 2021 Consumer Guide to Home Heating and Cooling also says setbacks may save as much as 10% on heating and cooling costs; its winter example estimates 1% on heating bills per 1°F setback over an eight-hour period. These figures come from different DOE guidance and should not be combined into a single promise. Results vary with climate, system, schedule, and home. In summer, avoid settings or setbacks that allow moisture to build up.

Maintain HVAC equipment before assuming it needs replacing

Keep registers clear, check filters as the equipment manufacturer recommends, and look for accessible signs of duct damage or disconnection. Arrange routine maintenance when needed. A blocked register, dirty filter, or duct problem can contribute to uneven temperatures, so a new furnace or air conditioner may not solve the actual cause.

If equipment is aging, frequently needs repair, or cannot keep rooms comfortable, have a qualified professional assess the system and its sizing before replacement. DOE recommends treating equipment upgrades as part of a whole-home plan that can also address insulation, air sealing, and thermostat settings. Its broad 2014 Energy Saver guidance estimated that combining equipment maintenance or upgrades with those other measures could reduce heating and cooling energy use by 20% to 50%; that range is not a measured result for every home.

Look at water heating, appliances, and lighting next

Once you have addressed the largest measured or suspected heating, cooling, or envelope issues, review hot-water use, water-heater condition, appliances, and lighting. Reducing unnecessary hot-water use and choosing efficient replacements when equipment is due can help. Compare actual use, condition, and local costs rather than replacing a functioning product automatically.

DOE’s 2014 Energy Saver page attributed about 12% of a typical utility bill to water heating and 15% of household energy consumption to appliances; it also estimated that newer lighting technologies could reduce lighting energy use by 50% to 75%. These are broad DOE figures, not current measurements for a particular household. The same page estimated that heating and cooling accounted for 43% of a typical home utility bill and that reducing drafts could save 5% to 30% a year. Treat all of these as historical general estimates whose relevance depends on your home and energy use.

Choose projects by fit, disruption, and local rules

There is no universal upgrade order that guarantees the best payback in every home. Compare each candidate project against the problem it is meant to solve, its upfront cost and disruption, whether it is suitable for DIY or needs a qualified professional, and its likely comfort effect. An assessment can help prioritize when several problems overlap.

DOE’s Home Energy Rebates information describes potential support for eligible measures such as insulation, air sealing, HVAC, water heaters, duct sealing, appliances, and lighting. Program availability, eligible work, contractors, household criteria, and amounts depend on location and current implementation. Check the official program information and local rules before including a rebate in your budget or committing to a project: DOE Home Energy Rebates.
