If Windows 11 feels slow, first find out whether active apps are using most of the memory. Close what you do not need, then check startup and background activity. These steps can ease temporary memory pressure, but they will not make every PC faster: persistent high use may reflect a demanding workload or limited, non-upgradeable hardware.
1. Find out what is using memory
Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. On the Processes page, review the Memory column to spot apps using a large share of RAM. The Performance page shows overall memory use. Close a process only if you recognize it and know you do not need it; do not end unfamiliar Windows processes as a cleanup measure.
2. Close apps and browser tabs you are not using
Save your work, then close unused applications and browser tabs. A browser with many open tabs, or several apps left running at once, can add to memory pressure. Check whether the PC responds better before making other changes. Microsoft’s Windows 11 performance tips also recommend closing apps and tabs that are not needed.

If closing apps does not improve performance, restart the PC. A restart closes running apps and gives you a fresh session; after signing back in, open only the software needed for your current task. This is a simple troubleshooting step, not a fix for a workload that regularly needs more memory.

4. Turn off nonessential startup apps
Apps that launch when you sign in can use memory even before you open them yourself. To review them, use either path:
- Settings: Settings > Apps > Startup
- Task Manager: Startup apps
Disable only items you recognize and do not need to start automatically. Task Manager includes a startup-impact indicator. Leave security software and hardware utilities enabled if you are unsure what they do. Microsoft explains startup app controls in its startup applications guidance.

5. Limit background activity where Windows offers the setting
Some installed apps let you prevent unnecessary background activity. For an app that provides the control, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app’s menu, choose Advanced options, then set Background app permissions to Never if it does not need to keep working when you are not using it. This setting is not available for every app, and disabling background activity can affect features such as notifications or syncing.
6. Reduce visual effects if responsiveness matters more than appearance
Windows visual effects can use system resources. If you prefer a simpler interface, search Windows for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows, open the result, and select Adjust for best performance. This changes the visual experience and may make the interface feel more responsive, but it is not a guaranteed or necessarily large reduction in RAM use. Microsoft lists visual effects among the factors to consider in its performance guidance.

7. Install Windows updates and clear disk space when needed
Check for updates under Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. Updates can include fixes and performance improvements, though installing one is not a direct RAM-clearing action.
If the drive is low on space, open Settings > System > Storage to review usage. Storage Sense and Cleanup recommendations can remove selected temporary or unneeded files. That frees disk storage, not RAM: RAM is working memory for active apps, while storage is space on the drive. Do not treat a storage cleanup as a direct memory fix.

8. Decide whether high use points to an app, workload, or hardware limit
If memory use repeatedly climbs, check Task Manager to see whether the same process or type of work is responsible. Note whether the slowdown remains after closing apps and restarting, and consider how much RAM is installed. If one particular app is consistently responsible, look for its own settings or support guidance before disabling other Windows components.
When more RAM may help
Microsoft lists 4 GB as the minimum RAM requirement for Windows 11. Its memory guidance recommends 8 GB for keeping a device running long term and says 16 GB or more may suit photo or video editing and other high-performance work. These are Microsoft’s published guidance, not a guarantee that a particular amount will make every PC fast. Before buying memory, check the exact PC model’s specifications or manufacturer documentation. Some computers allow upgrades and others do not; compatible memory depends on the device. Consider an upgrade only after confirming that the PC supports one and what type it accepts.
If the problem continues
Do not disable Windows services or end unfamiliar processes to chase a lower memory figure. A clean boot can help isolate conflicts from background software, but it is an advanced diagnostic. Microsoft warns that functionality may temporarily be affected and that changing advanced System Configuration settings can make a computer unusable. Use the clean boot procedure only if you are comfortable following support guidance, or work with a support professional.
