To reduce gaming-monitor ghosting, first identify whether you see ordinary trailing blur or inverse ghosting—bright or dark halos around moving objects. Then lower the monitor’s response-time or overdrive setting one step from its fastest mode and compare the same moving scene. Also confirm that the monitor and gaming device are using a refresh rate both support. The best setting depends on the monitor and your usual frame rate; maximum overdrive is not automatically the clearest.
Identify the motion artifact before changing settings
Different kinds of blur have different causes, so use what you see to guide your adjustment.
- Trailing blur: A moving object leaves a smear or trail behind it. Slow pixel transitions can contribute to this effect.
- Inverse ghosting: A bright or dark outline, halo, or corona appears around or ahead of a moving object. This can happen when overdrive is too aggressive and pushes a pixel past its intended level.
- Persistence blur: Motion looks blurred as your eyes track an object, even when pixel transitions are not the main problem. Each frame remains visible between refreshes; a higher refresh rate can reduce this blur, but does not make pixels transition faster.
Pixel response time describes how long a pixel takes to change from one color to another. Overdrive is a monitor setting that applies stronger drive to speed those transitions. Since stronger overdrive can also create overshoot, the goal is a useful balance—not the highest setting.

Reduce blur and overshoot in a controlled sequence
Change one monitor setting at a time and keep the test conditions consistent. Use a repeatable moving game scene or motion test, and hold the game, resolution, connection, and frame-rate conditions steady while comparing modes.

- 【INTEGRATED SPEAKERS】Whether you're at work or in the midst of an intense gaming session, our built-in speakers provide rich and seamless audio, all while keeping your desk clutter-free.
- 【EASY ON THE EYES】 Protect your eyes and enhance your comfort with Blue-Light Shift technology. This feature reduces harmful blue light emissions from your screen, helping to alleviate eye strain during long hours of use and promoting healthier viewing habits.
- 【WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE】Our sleek minimal bezel design ensures undivided attention. The nearly bezel-free display seamlessly connects in a dual monitor arrangement, delivering an unobstructed view that lets you focus on more at once, completely distraction-free.
- Check the refresh rate. Verify the rate selected on both the gaming device and monitor. The cable or input port may limit the available rate; check the monitor’s manual if the expected option is missing.
- Lower overdrive one step from the fastest mode. Look for an on-screen display option called Response Time, Overdrive, Trace Free, OD, or something similar. Compare the same moving scene after each change. Too little overdrive may leave trailing blur; too much may create inverse ghosting. Dell’s support FAQ likewise recommends trying a slower response-time mode if the fastest setting causes ghosting. Read Dell’s response-time troubleshooting guidance.
- Repeat the comparison at the frame rates you actually use. A setting that looks acceptable at maximum refresh may show overshoot at lower frame rates. If you use variable refresh rate (VRR), check the image while frame rate changes across your normal gaming range.
- If VRR makes artifacts worse, test a less aggressive mode. Some monitors offer variable overdrive, which dynamically adjusts overdrive as frame rates fluctuate. Check your monitor’s manual to see whether it has the feature and how to enable it; availability and behavior vary by model.
- Try backlight strobing only if it is supported and suits your setup. Strobing briefly flashes the backlight to reduce how long each frame remains visibly held. Consult the manual for compatibility with VRR and your chosen refresh rate, then compare motion clarity along with brightness and any visible artifacts. NVIDIA’s ULMB 2 information applies only to compatible monitors and describes its own technology and constraints. See NVIDIA’s ULMB 2 overview.
Why one setting may not fix every kind of blur
Refresh rate, pixel response time, and overdrive affect motion in different ways. A higher refresh rate can reduce persistence blur, but does not make a pixel complete its transition faster. Overdrive can help speed pixel transitions, but an overly aggressive mode can cause overshoot. Backlight strobing addresses how long frames are visibly held and may improve perceived clarity, but its practical trade-offs and compatibility depend on the monitor.
For further explanation of these effects and how response time is measured, see RTINGS’ monitor response-time testing guide, updated April 21, 2026. Its guidance notes that a monitor’s inherent response time cannot be changed, though settings may help improve motion handling.

- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
When the monitor may be the limiting factor
If the image still looks poor after checking refresh rate and comparing overdrive modes at your usual frame rates, the monitor’s own panel behavior may be the remaining limitation. If you replace it, look beyond an advertised minimum response time such as “1 ms.” Compare independent measurements of transitions and overshoot at the refresh rates you use, including dark transitions and the monitor’s behavior across your VRR range. A single minimum figure does not show whether motion looks clean across those conditions.
