To reduce avoidable cart abandonment, find the point where shoppers leave, then fix the specific friction your store data reveals: unexpected costs, a hard-to-use checkout, forced account creation, unclear delivery or payment details, or recoverable errors. Follow up with eligible shoppers who leave checkout, but treat recovery messages as a supplement—not a substitute for making checkout easier. Some visitors are only browsing, so a zero abandonment rate is not a realistic goal.

Why shoppers abandon carts—and what you can change

Cart abandonment can mean that someone added an item but did not buy, or that someone started checkout and did not finish. Those are different points in the funnel, and neither automatically means your store has a problem. Shoppers may be comparing options or waiting to decide.

Baymard Institute reports that 42% of US online shoppers said they had abandoned a cart in the previous three months because they were “just browsing / not ready to buy.” That is a shopper-reported reason, not the share of all visits that will abandon or a benchmark for your store. In the same survey, 17% cited a checkout that was too long or complicated. Baymard’s abandonment-reasons article was updated February 2, 2025.

The practical distinction is between intent and friction. You cannot make every browser ready to buy, but you can reduce obstacles for shoppers who do intend to place an order. Start by measuring where people leave rather than reacting to a store-wide abandonment figure alone.

Find the point where shoppers drop out

Track the sequence from product view to add to cart, checkout start, payment attempt, and completed purchase. Compare the stages by device, traffic source, geography, payment method, and new versus returning shopper when your analytics support those breakdowns. Look for a meaningful change or repeated failure in your own data; there is no universal threshold in the sources for deciding that a store’s abandonment rate is too high.

Each stage points to a different class of fix:

  • Many product views but few cart additions: review product-page clarity, price presentation, availability, and whether the offer answers likely shopper questions.
  • Cart additions but few checkout starts: make the next step obvious and show the order total, shipping cost, and relevant delivery information before checkout.
  • Checkout starts but few payment attempts: inspect account requirements, form length, mobile usability, and delivery or payment details.
  • Payment attempts but few completed orders: check payment failures and the shopper-facing error path. In Shopify, payment events can reveal failed-payment details, and abandoned-checkout records can be reviewed for patterns; other platforms expose different diagnostics. See Shopify’s abandoned-checkout documentation.

Use the same definitions and time windows when comparing stages. A cart-based measure, a checkout-start measure, and a session-based measure do not have interchangeable denominators, so comparisons between stores or reports can mislead.

Remove the checkout barriers shoppers can actually feel

Show the full cost early

Put shipping, taxes, fees, and the order total in the cart or early in checkout. If delivery charges depend on location, offer a clear estimate and explain what determines it. State any free-shipping threshold plainly, and avoid revealing a new charge only after a shopper has entered payment details.

Baymard’s May 19, 2026 guide reports that 39% of shoppers cited additional fees, such as delivery charges and taxes, as a reason for abandoning checkout. That is a reported reason, not a prediction of the share of your store’s lost orders. Tax and delivery requirements vary by location. Baymard’s checkout recommendations explain the case for showing the full cost or a clear estimate in the cart.

Offer an obvious guest-checkout route

Make “Continue as guest” or an equally clear guest option easy to find without requiring shoppers to pass through sign-in fields first. If account features are useful, invite customers to create an account after the order is complete. Baymard’s May 2026 guide reports forced account creation as a reason cited by 19% of shoppers; it also reports that 18% cited a process that felt too difficult. Those survey findings support testing a guest path, not assuming that account creation explains every checkout drop.

Ask for less, and make errors easy to fix

Collect only the information needed to fulfill the order. Hide fields that do not apply, support browser autofill, and use appropriate input types for information such as phone numbers and postal codes. If a field is required, explain why when the purpose might not be obvious.

When a shopper makes an error, identify the field and say how to correct it. Keep the information already entered, and do not force a restart for a simple mistake. Baymard reports an average of 23.48 default-visible checkout form elements across its benchmark, or 14.88 when counting only form fields; its article describes a potential 20–60% reduction in default-visible elements for many flows. These are Baymard benchmark findings, not targets that every checkout should meet. Its article also estimates a potential 35.26% conversion-rate increase for the average large-sized ecommerce site from fixing documented checkout usability issues—an estimate, not a promised result for an individual merchant.

Edward Scott, Research Lead at Baymard Institute, said: “Our ecommerce UX benchmark shows that many sites are still including too many form fields in their checkouts — degrading the overall user experience.” The quotation appears in Baymard’s May 19, 2026 guide.

Make delivery, payment, and trust details clear before the last step

Show expected delivery timing and available payment methods before the shopper reaches the final step. Make returns and payment-security information easy to find, and explain requests for sensitive details such as a phone number. Shopify’s checkout optimization guide, published August 19, 2026, lists delivery, payment choice, trust, mobile usability, and localization among factors to consider. Those are useful areas to inspect, but a platform vendor’s recommendations are not proof that any one change will cause a specific lift for your store.

Use recovery messages for eligible shoppers

A recovery message can bring a shopper back to an unfinished checkout. A useful email identifies what was left behind, links directly to the checkout when the platform supports it, and answers a likely question—such as delivery timing or return terms—without assuming the customer needs a discount.

Shopify’s 2026 guide suggests a first reminder after two to four hours, a second after 24 to 48 hours, and a later exploratory message if the shopper has not engaged. Treat this as a starting point from one vendor, then test timing and content against your own completed orders and revenue. A discount can cut margin and may teach customers to wait for an offer, so do not make it the default recovery tactic. Shopify’s abandoned-cart email guide cites Klaviyo benchmark data of a 6% average recovery-email click rate and 11.3% among Klaviyo’s top 10% of ecommerce customers. Those figures measure clicks, not purchases or recovered revenue.

Eligibility and timing depend on the platform. In Shopify, an abandoned-checkout record applies after a shopper provides an email and checkout remains incomplete for more than ten minutes. The feature is available only for certain sales channels, and Shopify withholds emails in cases that include a completed purchase before sending, a payment-processing error, an unsupported shipping destination, no available products, or a high-risk block. Those rules are Shopify-specific; check the behavior of your own platform before designing a message sequence. Shopify’s recovery documentation details its conditions.

Choose what to fix first, then measure the outcome

Prioritize an intervention using the evidence from your funnel: where the drop occurs, how many shoppers encounter the barrier, the effort required to fix it, the effect on order economics and margin, and whether it improves completion on both desktop and mobile. A price-surprise fix may matter most when shoppers leave before checkout; a form fix is more relevant when checkout starts but completion falters.

Where feasible, make one material change at a time and compare completed orders and revenue—not just checkout starts or email clicks. Keep an eye on payment failures and on whether the change helps the devices or shopper groups where the problem appeared. A higher recovery-email click rate by itself does not establish that more orders or revenue were recovered.
