On Android: Open Google Play, tap your profile picture, choose Payments & subscriptions → Redeem code, enter the code, tap Redeem, verify the Google Account shown, and tap Confirm. On a computer: visit play.google.com/redeem, enter the code, select Redeem, check the receiving account, and confirm.
Those steps work only when the code is valid for your account’s country and currency, any physical card was activated by the retailer, and the code has not expired or been used. A gift card normally adds general Google Play balance; a promotional code may instead provide a limited-time or app-specific benefit.
Redeem a Google Play code on an Android phone or tablet
- Open the Google Play app.
- Tap your profile picture in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Payments & subscriptions.
- Tap Redeem code. Some help screens or older app versions may call this Redeem gift code.
- Enter the code exactly as shown, without spaces or dashes, then tap Redeem.
- Review the Google Account displayed in the confirmation screen. This is the account that will receive the balance or benefit.
- If it is the correct account, tap Confirm.
Check the account before confirming. Google Play balance is attached to the account that completes redemption; moving it to another account later is generally not possible. If several accounts are signed in on the device, tap the profile picture first and verify the selected account rather than relying on the phone’s default account.

Scan a physical card instead of typing
If the printed characters are difficult to read, open the same Payments & subscriptions area, choose Redeem gift code, and select Scan gift card when that option appears. Keep the card flat and well lit. Scanning can reduce transcription mistakes, but it does not bypass country, activation, expiry, or account restrictions.

Keep the physical card and its receipt until the balance or benefit is visible. The serial number and proof of purchase may be needed if the print is damaged or the retailer says the card was activated but Google still rejects it.
Redeem a Google Play code on a computer
- Open play.google.com/redeem in a browser.
- Sign in to the Google Account that should receive the value.
- Enter the code and select Redeem.
- Read the account confirmation carefully. If the wrong account is signed in, stop and switch accounts before completing the transaction.
- Confirm the redemption.
Google says gift-card redemption codes are typically a 16-character combination of letters and numbers. That is a format guideline, not a requirement for every code: some digital codes have a different number of characters. Do not add spaces, punctuation, or hyphens unless the issuer explicitly included them as part of the code.
If the page opens under a family member’s or work account, sign out or use a private browser window before entering the code. Once confirmed, the value belongs to the account shown in the confirmation step, not necessarily the person who bought the card.
Other places a code may be accepted
During checkout
Google also documents code redemption from the payment-method selector during a Google Play purchase. At checkout, open the payment-method menu and look for the option to redeem a code, then enter it and follow the account confirmation prompts. The exact labels can vary by country, device, and purchase type. Confirm the account and the amount or benefit shown before finishing the purchase.
Inside an app
Some promotional codes are tied to a particular app rather than being general Play credit. If an app presents a code-entry prompt, redeem the code there as directed. Google’s troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends using the associated app when the code is app-specific. A legitimate app promotion can therefore fail in the general Play redemption box because it is intended to be claimed inside that app.
Gift cards and promotional codes are not the same
Both use a code-entry workflow, but what you receive and how long it lasts can differ. Read the offer terms before assuming a promotion works like a normal gift card.

Never convert a promotion’s wording into a promise of general, permanent Play balance. Look for a stated app, qualifying purchase, country, start or end date, and any restrictions before redeeming. Some promotions grant a one-time discount or an in-app item rather than money that appears in your Play balance.

- Correct account: Confirm the profile shown in Google Play or the browser is the account you intend to fund.
- Matching country and currency: A gift card is redeemable and usable only in the country and currency where it was purchased. The account’s Play country or region must match the card or offer.
- Retailer activation: Many physical cards are activated at the register. A card that was never activated cannot be fixed through the redemption screen.
- Readable code: Check every letter and number. Do not insert spaces or dashes.
- Offer dates: Promotional codes and promotional balance may expire. Check the original email, receipt, app notice, or terms.
- Account type: Work or school accounts can have administrator restrictions that prevent some Play features.
- Balance headroom: A code or promotion may be rejected if adding it would exceed the balance limit for your country.
For a digital code, retain the delivery email or order record. For a physical card, compare the printed currency and country marking with the recipient’s Play profile. Buying the right amount in the wrong currency cannot be corrected by changing a device language or payment method.

Country, currency, and moving or traveling
Google’s country rule is strict: a Play gift card is redeemable and usable only in the country and currency where it was purchased. Your Google Play account country or region must match the country in which the card or promotional offer is valid. A card bought in one country is not a reliable way to add balance to an account configured for another country.
If you recently moved
You may need to change your Google Play country to reflect your new location, subject to Google’s account requirements. Changing the country does not transfer existing redeemed balance. Balance remains associated with the original country and is still available there under the applicable terms, so do not change countries expecting the funds to follow you. Check the country setting before purchasing a new card, because changing it solely to redeem a mismatched card can leave existing balance tied to the former country.
If you are traveling
Try redeeming after returning to the country where the card was purchased or the promotion was offered. A location mismatch can trigger an error even when the characters are correct. If you are physically in the correct country and still receive a country error, use Google’s support form rather than repeatedly submitting the code.

Regional availability changes
Denominations, currencies, retailers, and terms vary by region. Google’s availability information recorded on October 13, 2026, lists important exceptions:
- Malaysia: Gift cards and prepaid gift-card-funded Play balance expired on February 1, 2026. Google says that prepaid balance can no longer be spent and that affected users may contact support about a refund. Promotional balance in Malaysia remains subject to the applicable promotion’s expiry terms.
- Singapore: Gift cards and gift-card-funded balance expired on February 1, 2025. Google’s regional information lists alternative payment methods.
These exceptions illustrate why a general statement that Google Play gift cards are available worldwide would be misleading. Check the live country-specific availability and terms for the account’s region before buying a card.
What Google Play balance can and cannot buy
Redeemed balance can pay for eligible digital content and services sold through Google Play, subject to the country’s rules and the individual service’s payment options. Some subscriptions do not accept stored Play balance, so the subscription’s checkout screen is the final authority.
- Generally eligible: qualifying apps, games, in-app purchases, books, films, music, and other digital products offered through Google Play in your region.
- Not eligible: hardware purchased from the Google Store, other gift cards, and transactions that the relevant service does not allow you to fund with Play balance.
- Region-dependent: catalogues, subscriptions, denominations, and supported payment methods differ by country.
Gift cards and prepaid Play balance are generally nonrefundable and nontransferable except where applicable law requires otherwise. You can ask the original retailer about a refund, but approval is the retailer’s decision; Google does not promise a refund simply because a code was entered on the wrong account. Do not buy a card expecting to move its value to a friend after redemption.
Fix common redemption errors
“Couldn’t redeem this code” or a code that looks mistyped
Re-enter the characters slowly and remove any spaces or dashes. Distinguish similar characters such as zero and the letter O, or one and the letter I. If the physical print is damaged, use the Android Scan gift card option. Do not discard the card or receipt while troubleshooting.

If the card remains unreadable, contact Google support with a clear photograph showing the card and its serial number, plus proof of purchase. Do not send the redemption code to an unrelated caller, seller, or stranger. If the code came by email, use the issuing company’s official support channel rather than replying to an unexpected message.
“This card has not been activated”
Physical cards may require activation by the retailer at purchase. Ask the seller to verify activation against the receipt. Google states that it cannot activate gift cards on the retailer’s behalf. If the retailer confirms activation and the error continues, contact Google support with the purchase details and card documentation.
“This code has already been redeemed”
A used code cannot be redeemed again. First check the Play balance on the same Google Account that was signed in when the code was entered. Ask household members or anyone who had access to the card whether they used it. Google does not disclose which account redeemed a code, so support may not be able to identify the recipient for you. If the balance is present, it may simply have been redeemed on a different account than the one currently open.
“You have reached your redemption limit”
This message indicates that redeeming the code would exceed the applicable country limit or that a redemption limit has been reached. Google’s documented remedy is to spend some of the existing balance, wait 24 hours, and try the code again. If the limit message persists after the waiting period, contact support and include the exact error text. Avoid repeatedly attempting the code during the waiting period; keep the receipt and code available instead.
“Couldn’t redeem this code. This code can only be used in [country/region].”
Check three things: the card’s purchase country, its currency, and your Google Play account country. If you are traveling, return to the purchase or offer country and retry. If all three match and the message still appears, use Google’s support form. A virtual private network or repeatedly changing location settings does not change the card’s underlying country eligibility.
“This code has expired” or an offer no longer works
Review the promotion’s terms and end date. Promotional credits can expire, and a promotion may be redeemable only during a designated period. A gift-card error can also mean the code was cancelled or is inactive; in that case, ask the retailer or the organization that issued the code to investigate. Keep screenshots of the offer’s dates if the message appears before the stated deadline.
The code is for an app
If the code was supplied for a specific app, open that app and follow its redemption prompt. Entering it in the general Play balance screen may produce an invalid-code message even when the code itself is legitimate. The app may also require you to be signed in with the account that will receive the reward.
A work or school account rejects the code
Organization-managed Google Accounts can disable or restrict Play features. Sign in with an eligible personal account if the code’s terms allow it, or ask your organization’s technical administrator whether redemption is blocked. Do not move a code into a personal account unless the promotion permits that account type.

What to include when contacting support
Provide the exact error message, country and currency, purchase date, retailer, receipt, card serial number, and the Google Account experiencing the problem. For a damaged card, include a readable photo of the front and the serial number while keeping the redemption code private from anyone who is not an official support channel. These details help distinguish a typing error from activation, country, expiry, or account-limit problems.
Buying a card safely
Use authorized regional retail partners and retain the receipt until the balance appears. Before paying, confirm that the denomination, country, currency, and seller are appropriate for the recipient’s Google Play account. Digital codes should come from the issuing company or an authorized seller; an unusually discounted code may be cancelled, already used, or obtained fraudulently. Availability, denominations, and seller authorization differ by region, so check the current country-specific information rather than assuming a listing is valid everywhere.

Google Play Help warns: “Be cautious of any non-Google entity or individual who asks for gift cards as a payment method for goods or services. This may be a scam.” It also says, “Never share the code for gift card redemption.”

- Do not pay a landlord, employer, government office, technical-support caller, seller, or online stranger with a gift-card code.
- Do not read the code aloud or photograph it for someone who claims they need it to verify a refund or account.
- Enter the code only in the official Google Play app, the official redemption page, or the named app when the offer explicitly requires it.
- If you already shared a code, contact the retailer and Google support immediately, keep the receipt, and report the suspected fraud to the relevant authorities.
After successful redemption
Open Google Play’s account area and check the balance or the app benefit associated with the offer. Keep the card and receipt until you have confirmed that the value reached the intended account. For a promotion, save the terms and expiry date; a promotional benefit may not appear as ordinary general-purpose balance.
Use the balance only for eligible Google Play purchases in the matching country. If a subscription or checkout does not offer Play balance as a payment method, that service may not accept stored value even though the redemption succeeded.

Why does Google Play say my code was already redeemed?

Recheck each character and use Payments & subscriptions → Redeem gift code → Scan gift card on Android when available. If the card remains unreadable, keep it and the receipt and contact Google support with a photo showing the card serial number and proof of purchase.

Check the receiving account before confirming, and make sure the card or promotion matches your country, currency, dates, and account type. Retailer activation, balance limits, app-specific instructions, and expiry explain many failures. Never share a redemption code with anyone demanding it as payment.
