Restore the endpoint, inspect the provider’s delivery attempts, then replay failed events through its supported dashboard or API. Before replaying, make processing idempotent and put incoming work into a durable queue. Automatic retries are provider-specific and may stop before your service is back; after a long outage, reconcile provider records with your application and restore any removed subscriptions.
Recover webhook deliveries in this order
- Restore the endpoint and dependencies. Confirm the service can return the successful status expected by the provider within its response deadline.
- Inspect delivery logs for the outage period. Record event or delivery IDs, timestamps, response codes, attempt counts, and failure reasons. These details help identify the affected events and distinguish an endpoint problem from a timeout, response-handling issue, or subscription problem.
- Fix the cause before replaying. A successful HTTP acknowledgement does not prove downstream work finished. Record each event durably before acknowledging it, so a process crash after the response does not silently lose work.
- Queue work for asynchronous processing. Acknowledge promptly, then process queued events independently. This helps meet provider timeouts and avoids overwhelming a backend that has just recovered.
- Replay failed deliveries using the provider’s supported dashboard or API. Check whether retries are automatic, whether a replay function exists, and whether delivery history is still available.
- Deduplicate and make side effects idempotent. Persist a delivery ID and processing outcome. If the same delivery is replayed, avoid applying the same side effect twice.
- Reconcile any remaining gaps. Compare provider-side records with application state, restore subscriptions if necessary, and retrieve missing records from the provider’s API or other source of truth. Feed recovered records through the same validated processing path.
- Monitor the recovery. Track delivery success rate, response latency, retry counts, queue depth, and unresolved or dead-lettered events until the backlog is cleared.
Why recovery depends on the provider
Webhook systems differ in whether they retry automatically, how long they retry, whether failed events can be replayed, and what happens to a subscription after repeated failures. A retry policy is not a complete recovery plan: a retry window can expire while the backend is unavailable, and some providers do not automatically redeliver at all.

GitHub: list and redeliver failed deliveries
GitHub marks a delivery failed if the server is down or takes longer than 10 seconds to respond. Because GitHub does not automatically redeliver failed deliveries, operators must use the Dashboard or a recovery workflow that checks attempted deliveries and resubmits failures.
For an automated workflow, periodically list deliveries attempted since the previous run, identify those whose status is not OK, and submit redelivery requests using GitHub’s REST API. GitHub App delivery-listing and redelivery endpoints require a JWT, and GitHub accepts a redelivery request with HTTP 202. Consult GitHub’s failed-delivery guidance and the relevant GitHub Apps webhook API documentation for endpoint details.

Return a 2XX response quickly and do longer work asynchronously, as described in GitHub’s webhook best practices. Use the X-GitHub-Delivery header to deduplicate: GitHub says the same value is used when a delivery is redelivered.
Shopify: check logs, subscriptions, and missing data
Shopify treats a response outside the 200 range as an error. Its documented retry limit is up to eight retries in four hours; repeated failures can remove subscriptions configured through the Admin API. Check the Shopify webhook troubleshooting guidance and its delivery logs before deciding which events or subscriptions need recovery.

Shopify recommends queuing work so a busy backend can meet request deadlines. Its verification guidance specifies a one-second connection timeout and five-second total request timeout. The Shopify delivery-verification documentation describes using X-Shopify-Webhook-Id as a persistent deduplication key. Store processed IDs and return success for a duplicate without repeating its side effects.

Stripe: inspect failed attempts in the Dashboard
In Stripe, open the Webhooks page, select the endpoint, then choose the Failed view. Inspect the event’s webhook attempt, including its HTTP status or response, before retrying. Stripe’s support guidance for failed webhook endpoints confirms that Stripe retries failed deliveries but does not state one universal retry count or time window. Use the current Dashboard details to determine what remains available for replay.

Persist delivery identity
Keep a durable record of delivery IDs and processing outcomes. Use the provider’s stable delivery identifier to detect a repeat, and do not assume that retries or manual replays will be unique. Where an application has both event identity and delivery identity, track them separately: one identifies the underlying event, the other a particular delivery attempt or provider delivery.

Separate acknowledgement from processing
Store the received event durably before sending a success response, then process it from a queue. This reduces the risk of acknowledging an event that the application later loses and gives operators a controlled way to drain a backlog.

Reconcile beyond the delivery log
When retries have expired, logs are insufficient, or a subscription was removed, compare the provider’s source records with your own state. Fetch missing records where the provider offers an API, restore applicable subscriptions, and run recovered records through normal validation and idempotency checks.

Watch recovery indicators
- Successful delivery rate and response latency.
- Queue depth and the age of the oldest queued event.
- Retry counts and the number of unresolved or dead-lettered events.
- Differences between provider-side records and application state.
Shopify documents delivery and response-time metrics and uses failure rate and response times to prioritize troubleshooting. More generally, these indicators help show whether the endpoint is healthy and whether the backlog is actually shrinking.
