If your Android phone was factory-reset, you can recover photos and files only if another copy still exists—for example, in Google Photos, a Google Account backup, cloud storage, on a computer, or on a removable SD card. Google says a factory reset erases data stored on the phone; it does not recreate files that existed only in internal storage.

First, check whether another copy exists

Start with the account and storage locations you used before the reset. A Google Photos library and an Android device backup are separate checks: photos appearing in a device backup does not prove every gallery image finished uploading to Google Photos.

  • Google Photos: Sign in to the Google Account you used on the phone and check the Photos library. Google says, “Your photos and videos are already available in Google Photos” when they were backed up there. Google Android Help: Back up or restore data on your Android device.
  • Google Photos Trash: If you deleted the images in Photos, look in Trash. Also confirm that you are viewing the account used for backup. Google Photos Help: Find lost photos & videos.
  • Other copies: Search Google Drive and other cloud accounts, computer folders, external drives, email attachments, messaging app media, and app-specific export folders.
  • Removable SD card: If the phone used a traditional removable card, inspect it separately in the phone or with a suitable computer reader. Files still on that card are a separate surviving copy, not recovered internal storage.

Restore your Google Account backup during setup

If Google Account backup was enabled, restore eligible data while setting up the reset phone. The exact screens vary by manufacturer and Android version; follow the phone’s setup prompts and check Google’s instructions for your device.

  1. Connect the phone to Wi-Fi during setup.
  2. Sign in with the Google Account used on the phone before the reset.
  3. When offered, choose the available backup and follow the restore prompts. Check the backup details, where available, to see what it contains.
  4. Allow time for the process. Google says restoration can take up to 24 hours to complete fully. Google Android Help: Back up or restore data on your Android device.

Google’s device backup may include apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS and MMS, but not every app backs up or restores all of its data. Pictures and videos are handled through Google Photos. Do not assume that a device backup contains every file in Downloads or every app’s private data. Check Android version and setup requirements

A backup from a newer Android version cannot be restored onto a phone running an older Android version. Google notes that using an older version as the destination may also result in an incomplete transfer. Restore steps differ by phone, so use the manufacturer’s instructions for exact menus. Google also says a Google Account password and screen-lock credentials may be needed for setup and verification. Understand what an SD card can—and cannot—restore

A traditional removable SD card may hold files independently of the phone’s internal storage, so it is worth checking if your device used one. Android’s adoptable storage is different: it is formatted and encrypted for the device that adopted it, with the keys stored on that device. It is not a generally readable card to move to another phone or computer. Android Open Source Project: Adoptable storage.

If no copy exists, set realistic expectations

Google describes a factory reset as erasing all data from the phone. Its documented recovery routes restore copies from an account backup or other storage; they do not provide a general way to undelete files that existed only in the phone’s reset internal storage. Android’s file-based encryption protects internal user data, so treat software promising guaranteed recovery after a reset with caution. The Android documentation explains the security design, but does not establish a universal recovery outcome for every model, reset method, or software release. Android Open Source Project: File-based encryption. If you have an unusual device-specific situation or a surviving removable medium, the manufacturer may be able to advise on that case.
