After a Samsung phone is factory-reset, you can recover photos and contacts only if another copy survived—such as a cloud backup, synced account, SIM card, SD card, computer, or another device. Start by checking Google Photos and Google Contacts, then restore any Google or Samsung backup that existed before the reset. A factory reset erases personal data stored on the phone; it does not necessarily erase separate cloud copies.
Before you start: check which account and copies you have
Samsung says a factory reset permanently deletes personal data from the phone, including contacts and photos. A reset is not the same as restarting the phone. The practical recovery task is therefore to locate a copy saved or synced elsewhere before the reset.
Use the same Google or Samsung account that was on the phone before it was reset. If you have more than one account, check each one: photos, contacts, or backups may belong to a different account than the one currently signed in. Google and Samsung restore options also depend on what was backed up, the device and software, and the backup configuration.

Recover photos from Google Photos
- Open Google Photos or visit photos.google.com and sign in to the Google Account used on the Samsung phone.
- Check the Photos library, and switch accounts if the expected pictures are missing.
- If the photos are available in the library, they are backed up to that Google Account and can be viewed there. Confirm they appear before assuming they were erased everywhere.
Google Photos backup is distinct from Android device backup. Google says backed-up photos and videos are available in Google Photos; restoring the phone’s device backup is the route for other backed-up data. A photo that was never backed up, or was in a location excluded from transfer, may not appear in the library.

Restore a Google device backup
If a Google device backup was made before the reset, Android setup can offer it during phone setup. The restore may include device data and contacts saved to the Google Account, but it does not mean every photo or file on the phone was included.
- During setup of the reset phone, connect to Wi-Fi and sign in with the original Google Account.
- When prompted, choose the available backup for the previous phone and select the data to restore, if the setup flow offers categories.
- After setup, check the phone’s backup details in Android settings where available, and allow the restore to finish. Google says a restore may take up to 24 hours.
Restore availability can depend on Android version. Google warns that a backup from a newer Android version cannot be restored onto a phone running an older version. Some transfer routes also omit hidden-folder media, downloads, data from non-Google accounts, and app data from apps that do not use Android backup.

Restore contacts based on where they were saved
Contacts saved to a Google Account
When you add the original Google Account to the phone, contacts saved to that account sync automatically. You can also check Google Contacts in a browser to see whether the contacts still exist in the account.

Contacts stored only in the phone’s local storage may have been erased by the reset unless another copy or backup exists. Contacts saved on a SIM card may still be available by importing them from the SIM through the phone’s Contacts app; exact menu labels vary by model and software.

Contacts saved through another account
If the contacts were synced through a non-Google account, such as another email provider, add that account and check its contacts service. A Google restore will not necessarily include data owned by a different account.
Check Samsung Cloud and Smart Switch
Samsung Cloud and Samsung Smart Switch are possible recovery routes only when a relevant backup was created before the reset and includes the data you need. Sign in to the associated Samsung account to check for Samsung Cloud backups, or open Smart Switch and choose the appropriate restore source if you previously backed up through it.

Samsung’s available settings, menus, and included data vary by model, software version, region, and backup configuration. Do not assume a Samsung backup includes every photo or contact: check the backup contents and restore options shown for your device. Samsung’s factory-reset guidance explains what the reset removes, while backup availability depends on the particular setup.
Look for separate copies
Check other places where you may have copied or stored the files independently:

- A SIM card or removable SD card, if your phone used one.
- A computer or external drive that received a Smart Switch or manual backup.
- Another phone or tablet where the same Google, Samsung, or other account was already syncing data.
- Other cloud storage or an app account used to save or sync photos and contacts.
These are separate copies, not guaranteed parts of a phone backup. Google notes that some categories, including downloads, hidden-folder media, non-Google account data, and data from apps that do not use Android backup, may not transfer through its setup restore.
If no backup or synced copy exists
The official recovery guidance cited here describes restoring backups and synced data; it does not establish a general method for retrieving photos or contacts erased from a phone’s internal storage after a completed factory reset when no other copy exists. Be cautious of paid recovery apps or services that promise guaranteed recovery in that situation. Factory Reset Protection may ask for the previous owner’s account after some reset methods, but it is an ownership check—not a way to recover erased files.
