To lower a menace in Fallen London, use a matching social action if you have an eligible contact, or choose a solo storylet or item available to your character. The right option depends on your location, story progress, inventory, and—sometimes—opportunity cards. Act before a menace reaches level 8: that threshold can send your character to a penalty location and cost more actions to escape.
How menaces work—and why level 8 matters
The four primary menaces are Wounds, Nightmares, Scandal, and Suspicion. They commonly build up alongside Dangerous, Watchful, Persuasive, and Shadowy activities, respectively. Menaces advance through change points (CP); at level 8, the relevant consequence can move your character out of their current situation.
- Wounds: the slow boat.
- Nightmares: a dream-related penalty location. The destination can depend on circumstances such as being at zee, a recurring-dream quality, or having a Memory of Light.
- Scandal: the Tomb-Colonies.
- Suspicion: New Newgate Prison.
The community-maintained Fallen London wiki guide to menaces describes the level-8 consequences and available recovery routes. The specific storylet, requirements, and availability can change, so check what your game currently offers.
Choose a recovery route that fits your character
Before spending actions, check whether you can access the action now and what it costs. Social help may be a direct route, but it can require a friend, an incoming invitation, or an outgoing request. Solo options may depend on a particular area, unlocked story, item, or opportunity card. Some actions can also affect another menace or a persistent quality.

- 12 New Factions.
- New Town Events Deck.
- New Town Technology.
- Large box for storing all cards.
- Availability: Are you in the right location, and have you unlocked the relevant storylet?
- Help required: Does the action need another player or a specific invitation?
- Cost: Does it consume an item, currency, or another resource?
- Reliability: Is the reduction immediate, chance-based, card-dependent, or spread across several actions?
- Side effects: Could it raise another menace or change a lasting quality?
If a menace is close to level 8, favor an eligible direct reduction over a slow or chance-based route. The options below are drawn from the wiki guide; use the current in-game description to verify prerequisites and effects.
Lowering Wounds
Use social help or an available solo action
The guide lists social assistance, in-game actions, and items for reducing Wounds. Which solo route works depends on story progress, location, and what you carry. If Wounds reach level 8, you can be sent to the slow boat, where further actions are needed to recover and return.

When “Time in Bed” is available
At Lodgings, “Time in Bed” is one listed option, but it requires Wounds of at least 2 and can take three actions. Consider the full action sequence rather than judging it only by its change-point reduction. Check the storylet for its current requirements.
Lowering Nightmares
Ask for help or use a letter-based option
The guide lists social help for Nightmares, including asking another player to assist, as well as a letter-based route. These options depend on having the right contact or access to the relevant social action.

“Time in Bed” is also listed for Nightmares when Wounds are present. Other routes include later-game areas and actions, and consumables such as F.F. Gebrandt’s Superior Laudanum. Some options are event-limited or require later-game access; rely on the current in-game requirements rather than assuming they are available to every character.
At level 8, Nightmares can move your character to a dream-related penalty location. The precise destination can vary with circumstances, including whether you are at zee, your recurring-dream quality, or whether you possess a Memory of Light.

Lowering Scandal
Social routes
The guide lists ways to ask another player to help lay rumours to rest, and a route involving sending a name written in Gant. Check the action details and eligibility before relying on either.
Solo routes
Listed solo options include certain actions and opportunity cards, church services, and Nikolas & Sons Instant Ablution Absolution. The guide lists the latter as reducing Scandal by 1 CP. Access, card availability, and prerequisites determine whether any particular route is practical for you.

Scandal at level 8 can lead to exile in the Tomb-Colonies. If you are approaching that threshold, compare a currently available direct option with card-dependent or multi-action alternatives.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Lowering Suspicion
Use a direct action when its conditions are met
The guide lists social assistance and location-based actions. In Spite, “Confound the Constables” is listed as reducing 3–4 CP when its Airs and Shadowy requirements are met. Other routes may require later-game access or several actions, so inspect the specific storylet before committing.
Watch the Criminal Record interaction
Nikolas & Sons Instant Ablution Absolution can reduce Suspicion only while your Criminal Record is below level 4, according to the guide. Arrest can add a Criminal Record; at level 4, the guide says this route no longer reduces Suspicion. Suspicion at level 8 can send you to New Newgate Prison, so weigh any action’s persistent side effects as well as its immediate reduction.

Equipment prevents build-up; it does not cure a current menace
Menace-affecting equipment changes future menace gain from actions rather than directly lowering a menace you already have. The wiki gives examples of gear that can reduce build-up for particular menaces, but marks its equipment section incomplete and warns that its formulas may be incorrect. Treat such gear as possible prevention, not a guaranteed cure or a source of exact reduction values.
