Start with Samsung Gallery’s Trash, then check Google Photos and OneDrive using the accounts that may have stored the picture. You can restore a photo only if it is still in a service’s trash or exists in a backup. Samsung’s Gallery-to-OneDrive sync ended September 30, 2026, but files synced before then remain in OneDrive.
First, work out where the photo went
A photo that is missing from Gallery may still be in a cloud library, another app, or a different account. Think about where you last saw it and whether you deleted it from Samsung Gallery, Google Photos, or OneDrive. If it disappeared without you deleting it, check Google Photos’ Archive and make sure you are signed into the account that may have backed it up.
Check each relevant app’s trash separately. Deleting an item in one service does not tell you whether a copy remains in another. The steps below cover the main places Galaxy owners may find a recoverable copy.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Restore a photo from Samsung Gallery Trash
- Open Gallery.
- Tap Menu, then Trash or Recycle bin. The label and availability can vary by device and software version.
- Select the photo and tap Restore.
Samsung Canada says deleted Gallery files stay in Trash for 30 days. After that, they are permanently deleted from this trash. If you do not see Trash or Recycle bin, check Gallery’s menu and settings; Samsung’s support guidance differs by release on whether the feature must have been enabled before deletion. Check Google Photos
- Open Google Photos.
- Tap Collections, then Trash.
- Select the photo and tap Restore.
Google’s Android help says Trash items are permanently deleted after 30 days, and items permanently deleted from Trash cannot be restored through Google Photos. A restored image returns to the Google Photos library, its albums, and the phone’s Gallery app. [Google Photos Help for Android]
If the photo is not in Trash
- Switch to any other Google account you may have used. A backup in a different account will not appear in the current account’s library.
- Check Archive in Google Photos in case the image was hidden rather than deleted.
- Review backup settings. Turning backup on now helps with future photos, but it cannot create a cloud copy of an older photo that was never uploaded.
Google also says an account inactive for two years or more may be subject to its inactivity policy, which is separate from the 30-day Trash period. [Google Photos Help for Android]

Look for previously synced photos in OneDrive
Samsung ended its Gallery Sync with OneDrive service on September 30, 2026. Photos and videos synced before the end of the service remain in the linked OneDrive account and can be downloaded from the OneDrive app or website. The old integration no longer provides new Gallery sync, so check the account you originally linked rather than expecting recent Gallery photos to have uploaded through it. Retention depends on account and context: Samsung’s guidance for previously synced Gallery files describes 93 days, while Microsoft’s general OneDrive guidance says 30 days for personal accounts and 93 days for work or school accounts unless an administrator changed the setting. What to do if every trash folder is empty
Check other Google and Microsoft accounts, Google Photos Archive, and any older copies on a computer, another phone, or a backup drive. If the photo has been permanently deleted from all relevant trash folders and no backup or separate copy exists, the official Samsung and Google guidance covered here does not provide a supported restore route. Google explicitly says permanently deleted Photos items cannot be restored through Google Photos. [Google Photos Help for Android; Samsung recovery guidance]
Do not assume a generic recovery app can retrieve a permanently deleted image. The available official guidance does not establish that such tools work for a particular Galaxy model, Android version, storage setup, or deletion history. A specialist recovery service would likewise need to assess those specifics; there is no verified universal recovery promise.

Make future photo loss less likely
- Choose a backup service and confirm that backup is enabled for the account you actually use.
- Check occasionally that recent photos appear in the cloud library; an enabled setting is not proof that a particular image uploaded.
- Keep important originals in another location, such as a computer or external drive, if losing them would be costly.
- Remember that cloud trash has its own retention rules. A backup service is useful only while a copy remains accessible.
