If you deleted a file from Downloads, first stop saving anything to the drive where it was stored. Check the Windows Recycle Bin and any OneDrive recycle bin or backup before trying recovery software. If the file was permanently deleted from local storage, Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery can scan it, but recovery is not guaranteed—new data may already have overwritten it.
First, work out whether the file was deleted
A missing download can mean several different things: the file was deleted, moved to another folder, stored in a synced OneDrive location, or merely removed from a browser’s download list. Search Downloads and likely alternate folders before attempting recovery.
A Drecov search-result snippet says that removing an item from Chrome’s download history does not itself delete the file from the computer. The underlying Google support page was not independently verified here, so treat that as a distinction to check on your own device: look for the file in File Explorer rather than assuming the history entry and the file are the same thing.
Stop using the affected drive
Once you suspect a local file was deleted, avoid downloading, installing, or saving files to that drive. Ordinary computer use can create data that overwrites the space where deleted file contents may remain. Microsoft advises users to minimize or avoid computer use to improve the chances of recovery, and notes that overwriting is especially possible on SSDs. Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery guidance explains this limitation.

Choose the recovery path that matches where the file was stored

Restore the file from the Windows Recycle Bin
- Open the Recycle Bin from the desktop.
- Find the file, right-click it, and choose Restore.
Windows returns the restored item to its original folder. If it is not in the bin, or the bin was emptied, check OneDrive or a backup before using a recovery utility.
Check OneDrive if Downloads was synced
Sign in to OneDrive on the web and open its recycle bin. Select the item and choose Restore. Microsoft’s current support guidance states that deleted items are kept for 30 days for personal accounts and 93 days for work or school accounts, unless an administrator changed the retention setting. Items permanently deleted from the OneDrive recycle bin cannot be restored through that bin. See Microsoft’s OneDrive restore instructions.

A cloud-deleted online-only file may not appear in the local Windows Recycle Bin, which is why the web recycle bin matters for synced folders. Microsoft also documents a separate whole-account restore feature for Microsoft 365 subscribers with a 30-day lookback; that is not the same as the retention period for restoring an individual deleted item.

Use Windows File Recovery for local files that are not in a bin
Windows File Recovery is Microsoft’s command-line app, available from the Microsoft Store, for attempting to recover deleted files from local internal, external, or USB storage. It does not support cloud storage or network shares. The source drive and the destination drive must be different, so if the PC has only one drive, connect a USB or external drive to receive recovered files. That external drive is only the destination; it is not recovery software.

Select a scan mode
- Regular: Microsoft recommends this for recently deleted files on an NTFS drive.
- Extensive: Microsoft lists this for older deletions, formatted or corrupted NTFS drives, and FAT or exFAT drives.
The general command syntax is winfr source-drive: destination-drive: [/mode] [/switches]. When scanning the operating-system drive, use a filter to narrow the search to the relevant file or folder.

winfr C: E: /regular /n Users<username>DownloadsReplace <username> with the actual Windows profile folder name and E: with the letter of the separate destination drive. Keep the trailing backslash after Downloads. This adapts Microsoft’s documented folder-search example; it is not a tested command for every Windows configuration. Check the profile path and drive letters carefully before running it. The recovered results should go to the different destination, not back onto C:.

Where Drecov fits—and what is not established
A Drecov search-result snippet positions the product as an option for readable local storage after built-in recovery paths fail. It says Drecov does not repair failed disks or restore data that has already been overwritten. The Drecov page itself was not accessible, so its current interface steps, supported Windows editions, licensing, and other product claims are not verified here. There is no basis to promise a successful recovery or to claim that it can recreate a file that never fully downloaded or retrieve a file from a remote website.
If the drive is failing or making unusual noises, stop using it rather than installing recovery software onto it. The documented recovery options above cannot repair a failed disk.
