Reclaim the account by registering your phone number again in the official WhatsApp app. Enter the six-digit code sent to your number by SMS or phone call; doing so logs the scammer out. Then remove unknown linked devices, secure two-step verification, and check whether the phone or SIM was compromised. Warn contacts before or during recovery so they do not trust requests sent from the hijacked account.
Do these things first
- Warn people through another channel. Call or text close contacts, post from a separate social account, or ask a trusted person to alert family and work groups. Say that the WhatsApp account is compromised and that messages asking for money, one-time codes, gift cards, or urgent help are fraudulent. Do not ask anyone to send a code back to you.
- Recover control of the phone number. If your phone can still receive ordinary calls or SMS messages, proceed to WhatsApp registration. If service suddenly stopped, contact your mobile carrier through its official channel and report a possible SIM loss, number transfer, or service interruption. WhatsApp cannot complete registration until you control the number.
- Re-register in the official app. Open WhatsApp, enter the same phone number, and request the six-digit SMS or voice-call code. Enter it yourself; never forward it to another person. WhatsApp’s security guidance is direct: “If you’ve lost access to your account, re-register your phone number.”
- Keep the account under observation. Once access returns, open Settings → Linked Devices and log out every device you do not recognize. Complete the security steps below before resuming normal chats.
Do not pay an online “recovery” service, install a remote-control app for a stranger, or disclose an SMS code, call code, two-step PIN, passkey, or backup credential. Someone who asks for one of those secrets is trying to keep control or take it again.
How WhatsApp account takeover recovery works
WhatsApp accounts are tied to a phone number. Re-registering that number with a newly delivered six-digit code proves to WhatsApp that you control the line and starts a session on your phone. The government cyber-security guidance cited for this procedure states that entering the code automatically logs the other user out. That is the central recovery action; the other questions—an unknown PIN, missing mobile service, linked devices, or malware—determine how long recovery takes and what containment is needed.

Step-by-step: re-register your number
1. Use only the genuine WhatsApp app
Install or update WhatsApp through the phone’s official app store. Do not use modified or unofficial WhatsApp clients. WhatsApp engineering warns that unofficial clients can contain malware; its Device Verification system is designed to block suspicious attacker connections while allowing the legitimate user to continue using the account.

2. Start registration with your existing number
- Open WhatsApp and choose the option to register or verify a phone number.
- Select the country and enter the full number in international format, checking every digit.
- Request the verification code by SMS. If SMS is unavailable but the line can receive calls, use the voice-call option offered by the app.
- Read the six-digit code from your own message or call and type it into WhatsApp. Never read it to a caller claiming to be support, a friend, a police officer, or a security agent.
Successful verification signs the other WhatsApp user out. You may see your chats, groups, and settings return according to what is stored on the phone or in an available backup. If the attacker is still sending messages while you work, continue warning contacts through another channel rather than negotiating with the attacker.
3. If the app demands a PIN you did not set
Two-step verification is a separate PIN that can be requested after the SMS code. If you never created that PIN, the scammer may have enabled the feature. The cited recovery instructions say you must wait seven days before signing in without the unknown PIN. Re-registering with the six-digit code still logs out the other device; the waiting period affects completion of sign-in when the attacker-controlled PIN is requested.
Do not guess repeatedly or use a PIN supplied by the person who took over the account. Record when you first entered the SMS code, keep the phone and number under your control, and retry after the seven-day period shown by WhatsApp. If WhatsApp presents a different, specific timer, follow the timer displayed in the official app rather than attempting workarounds.

When the verification code will not arrive
Check the number and delivery channel
- Confirm the country code and number are correct.
- Make sure the phone has cellular service, can receive ordinary SMS messages, and is not in airplane mode or blocking unknown calls.
- Use the voice-call option only if you control the line and can answer it privately.
- Avoid requesting codes repeatedly in quick succession; use the retry time shown by WhatsApp.
Investigate a SIM or number takeover
A sudden loss of service while another person is using your WhatsApp can indicate SIM theft, an unauthorized number transfer, or a carrier-side interruption. Contact the carrier using a number or website you already trust—not a link sent by the scammer. Tell the carrier that you suspect loss of control of the number and ask what identity checks and account-security steps are required. The available guidance establishes that number control is necessary but does not prescribe one universal carrier process, so the exact recovery steps vary by carrier and country.
After mobile service returns, repeat WhatsApp registration with the six-digit code. Change the carrier-account password and any account PIN from a clean device if the carrier confirms unauthorized changes.
Remove the scammer’s remaining access
Review Linked Devices
- In WhatsApp, open Settings → Linked Devices.
- Read the device names, locations or activity times shown.
- Log out every entry you cannot positively identify. When in doubt, log it out; you can link your own computer again later.
This action handles browser, desktop, and other linked sessions. It does not replace phone-number re-registration: if the scammer still controls the number, they may be able to register again.

Secure two-step verification
After you have regained access and any unknown-PIN waiting period is complete, open Settings → Account → Two-step verification. Set a PIN that is unique to WhatsApp and add a recovery email if the current app offers that option. Do not reuse a banking, email, or carrier PIN. Store the PIN in a reputable password manager or another protected method rather than in an unencrypted note shared with others.
Consider a passkey
WhatsApp may offer passkey setup in the account-security area. Meta says a passkey can use a fingerprint, Face ID, or the phone’s screen-lock code. A 2026 Meta newsroom article reports more than one billion passkeys across Meta services; availability and exact menu labels can vary by phone, operating system, and account. A passkey complements number-based registration but does not eliminate the need to protect your SIM and screen lock.
Check the phone for malware or abusive settings
Account recovery is incomplete if the phone itself can still expose codes or messages. This check is especially important if you installed a “security” app at someone’s request, used an unofficial WhatsApp client, granted accessibility access to an unfamiliar app, or noticed pop-ups, battery drain, or settings changing without permission.

- Review installed apps and remove anything unfamiliar or unnecessary, especially software installed outside the official app store.
- Inspect Accessibility, Notification access, device-administrator, VPN, and screen-recording permissions. Revoke access from apps you do not recognize.
- Run a reputable device-security scan and follow its removal instructions.
- Update the phone’s operating system and WhatsApp from their official stores.
- From a clean device, change passwords for email, cloud backup, banking, social, and carrier accounts. Start with the email account because it can reset other accounts.
- Turn on the phone’s screen lock and keep its unlock code private.
If a scan cannot remove a suspected threat, back up essential personal files without copying unknown applications, perform the phone maker’s supported reset procedure, and restore only from trusted sources. If the phone contains work or financial data, involve your organization’s IT or security team before resetting it.

WhatsApp says that past conversations stored on your phone cannot be read by someone who accesses the account on another device. A linked or newly registered device can, however, read and reply to new messages and post in groups while the takeover continues. Anyone who already opened a message, saved a photo, or copied information before you recovered the account may still possess that information; logging the device out cannot erase what was already seen.
Tell contacts which messages were fraudulent and ask them to report or block the impersonating account or number. If the scammer requested money or sensitive information, each recipient should contact the relevant bank, service, or fraud-reporting authority directly. Do not forward the scammer’s requests as if they were legitimate.

Recovery paths for common situations
You still receive SMS messages
This is the fastest path: warn contacts, re-register with the six-digit code, remove unknown linked devices, and set your own two-step verification. Check the phone for suspicious software before changing other passwords.
You receive the code but face an unknown PIN
Enter the SMS code to displace the other device, then observe the seven-day wait required to sign in without the attacker-set PIN. Keep control of the number during the entire period and do not share any subsequent code.
Your phone has no service
Start with the carrier, not a third-party “WhatsApp recovery” service. Restore the SIM or number transfer, secure the carrier account, and then repeat registration. Until the number is restored, you cannot reliably evict a person who can receive future verification codes.
The phone may be infected
Use a clean device to change critical passwords, ask trusted contacts to ignore messages, and inspect or scan the phone. Remove unofficial clients and abusive permissions before entering new security codes. If you cannot establish that the phone is clean, seek qualified technical help or reset it using the manufacturer’s instructions.
Common mistakes that prolong a takeover
- Sending the code to “support.” WhatsApp verification codes are for the person registering the number. Support staff, friends, and recovery services do not need your code.
- Deleting and reinstalling repeatedly. Reinstallation does not fix a SIM takeover or an unknown two-step PIN and can complicate access to local chat data.
- Leaving linked devices untouched. Re-registration evicts the other phone, but unrecognized browser or desktop sessions should still be logged out manually.
- Ignoring the carrier account. If someone can transfer your number again, the WhatsApp account can be reclaimed again.
- Continuing to use an unofficial client. Modified clients can contain malware and undermine the protections in the official app.
- Changing passwords on a suspected infected phone. Use a clean device first, then remediate the phone.
- Assuming old chats are automatically exposed. Another device cannot read conversations stored only on your phone, but new messages and group activity remain at risk until access is removed.
Aftercare checklist
- Contacts and groups were warned through a separate channel.
- The phone number was re-registered in the official WhatsApp app with a code you entered yourself.
- Any unknown two-step PIN was handled using the official seven-day waiting process.
- Every unrecognized entry in Settings → Linked Devices was logged out.
- Two-step verification was enabled with a unique PIN and a recovery email where available.
- A passkey was considered if the option is offered on your device.
- WhatsApp and the phone operating system were updated.
- Unofficial clients, unfamiliar apps, and abusive accessibility or notification permissions were removed.
- Important passwords were changed from a clean device.
- Contacts were told which messages were fraudulent and asked to report or block the impersonating account.
When to escalate
Use official WhatsApp support if registration remains impossible after your number is restored, if the app shows an account state you do not recognize, or if the seven-day process does not behave as described in the app. Contact your carrier for SIM or number-transfer problems. Involve your employer’s IT or security team when the account is used for work. Contact banks, payment services, or local cybercrime authorities separately if the scammer obtained money, identity documents, passwords, or financial information.
The practical order is consistent: protect the people around you, regain the phone number, re-register with the six-digit code, remove linked sessions, defeat the unknown PIN through the official waiting period, and clean the phone. That sequence stops the active takeover while reducing the chance that the scammer can return.
