Start with Blizzard’s official Battle.net Account Recovery tool. Then secure the computer you use to play, submit a Blizzard support ticket describing the compromise and any missing items, and harden the account after access returns. Do not pay a third-party “recovery” service or give your credentials to anyone who contacts you claiming to be Blizzard.
Use the official recovery route first
A compromised World of Warcraft account is a Battle.net account problem, even if the visible damage is in-game. Blizzard’s hacked-account guidance tells players to use Account Recovery, secure the computer, and then submit a support ticket. Follow that order: an attacker may still have access through a stolen password, malware, a changed authenticator, or an active session.
Open Blizzard’s website by typing the address yourself or using a bookmark you already trust. Navigate to the Battle.net Account Recovery page rather than following a link in an unsolicited email, direct message, or in-game whisper. The live recovery portal presents options that can include password recovery, authenticator removal, and unlocking a locked account.
Blizzard’s support interface uses problem labels such as “Account compromised,” “All items missing,” and “Password changed.” Choose the label that best describes the immediate problem; mention the other symptoms in the case details. If several symptoms apply, do not open separate cases for each one. Identify the main problem and give support a single, chronological account.

Choose the recovery path that matches your situation
| Your situation | What to do | Information to include or have ready |
|---|---|---|
| You know the email and can still sign in, but suspect someone else accessed the account | Use Account Recovery or account-security options, then change the password after the computer is checked. | Recent unauthorized changes, unfamiliar characters or realms, and missing items. |
| Your password was changed | Use the password-reset option in Account Recovery. | The registered email, or the recovery information Blizzard requests. |
| You forgot the registered email | If phone notifications were previously enabled, try the recovery tool’s email-recovery function. Otherwise, use Blizzard Customer Support. | Any account-identifying information you can provide accurately. |
| You forgot a security question or cannot locate the account | Contact Blizzard Customer Support through its official site. | Explain that you cannot complete self-service recovery and describe why. |
| The authenticator is blocking access | Use the recovery portal’s authenticator-removal option, if shown. | Follow the portal’s identity and ownership checks. |
| The account is locked | Use the recovery portal’s unlock-account option, if available. | Describe the lock and any suspicious activity preceding it. |
| Characters, gold, or equipment are missing | Open or update the compromised-account ticket and list the missing items and the relevant characters. | Character names, realms, approximate last-known dates, and other unauthorized changes. |
This comparison is useful because the correct branch depends on the barrier, not just on the fact that something went wrong. A password reset will not solve a forgotten account email, and removing an authenticator will not address an infected computer. Select the narrowest official option that fits, then explain every related symptom in the same case.
Use Blizzard’s official options instead of a separate recovery company. The cited Blizzard guidance does not promise that every item will be restored, specify what evidence will be requested, or guarantee a response time.
Secure the computer before contacting support
Blizzard explicitly places computer security before the support ticket. If a keylogger or other malware captured your new password, changing it while the machine is infected only gives the attacker another password to steal. The same applies to an email password: if the email account is compromised, an attacker may be able to intercept future recovery messages.
Scan for malware and keyloggers
- Disconnect the computer from the internet temporarily if you believe it is actively compromised.
- Run a current, reputable security scan that checks for malware, keyloggers, and viruses. Allow the scanner to quarantine or remove anything it identifies.
- Install pending operating-system, browser, and security-software updates, then restart and run a second scan if the software recommends one.
- If you installed a suspicious addon or executable, remove it and scan again. Blizzard specifically warns that an addon installer should not require you to run an executable.
Do not log in again from the questionable machine until the scan and updates are complete. If you cannot establish that it is clean, use a different, trusted device for recovery and support. A different device is a practical way to avoid typing a new password into a potentially monitored system; it does not replace cleaning the original computer.
Check addons and downloads
Player-made addons are a common place for malicious files to enter a game setup. Download addons only from sources you trust, inspect what an installer is asking you to run, and reject executable files presented as part of a normal addon installation. A security scan is still necessary if an addon looked suspicious; uninstalling it alone does not prove that a keylogger or other component is gone.
Keep the browser and security software current as part of the cleanup. Do not assume that a familiar addon name or a polished download page makes a file safe. If an installer unexpectedly requests an executable, stop the installation and investigate it before entering any Battle.net credentials.
Recover access step by step
1. Open Account Recovery manually
Go to Blizzard’s official site and open the Battle.net Account Recovery page. Select the option that matches the problem: password reset, account or email recovery, authenticator removal, or account unlock. Complete the prompts with truthful information. Do not guess at details that could associate you with the wrong account.
The portal is a live service, so the exact wording or available choices may change. Follow the options currently displayed instead of relying on an old screenshot or a link supplied by a stranger. If the page sends you to Customer Support, continue through Blizzard’s own site.
2. Reset the password when that is the barrier
If the registered email is still yours, use the password-reset flow and set a password that has never been used on another site. If you no longer remember the registered email but had phone notifications enabled, try the recovery tool’s email-recovery function. Blizzard directs users who forgot a security question or need help locating an account to Customer Support.

Do not recycle a familiar password with a small change, such as adding a number at the end. Blizzard recommends a strong password made from a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols, and the important requirement is that it be unique to Battle.net. Secure the email account separately if there is any possibility that its password was reused or exposed.
3. Record unauthorized changes
Before changing anything that could erase useful evidence, note what you observed: password or email changes, an unfamiliar authenticator, characters you do not recognize, missing gold or equipment, deleted items, and the approximate time you last had normal access. Screenshots of error messages and account pages can help you describe the incident accurately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMake the list specific and factual. Include character names, realms, and approximate dates rather than broad statements such as “everything disappeared.” If you can still sign in, check each character you normally play and record the affected locations. If you cannot sign in, state that clearly and describe the last successful access you remember.
4. Secure the account after the computer is clean
Change the password from the clean device. Use a long, unique password containing a mixture of letters, numbers, and symbols. Do not reuse the Battle.net password for email, another game, or any other service. If your email account used for Battle.net has also been exposed, secure that email account separately before relying on it for password resets.
Check the account contact details while you are signed in. Confirm that the email and phone information are yours and that an attacker has not added a recovery method. If security settings show remembered devices or active sessions, remove those you do not recognize or use the available sign-out option.
5. Submit the Blizzard support ticket
After securing the computer, use Blizzard’s support site to open a ticket for the compromised account. State clearly that the Battle.net account was hacked. Include the problem label that fits, the changes you saw, the affected characters and realms, and a factual list of missing items. Say whether you can currently sign in, whether the registered email changed, and whether an authenticator or account lock is involved.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A useful ticket has four parts:
- Access status: explain whether you can sign in, whether the password or email changed, and whether an authenticator or lock prevents entry.
- Observed compromise: list unfamiliar characters, contact changes, transactions, deleted items, or other activity you did not authorize.
- Timing: give the approximate last time you had normal access and when you noticed the problem.
- Requested review: ask Blizzard to review the compromised account and identify any missing items or unauthorized changes.
Keep the description chronological and concise. Do not send passwords, authenticator codes, payment-card numbers, or other secrets in a ticket unless Blizzard’s official form explicitly requests a safe verification detail. Reply to follow-up questions in the same ticket so the case history remains together.
What to do when you regain access
Add stronger authentication
Blizzard recommends adding the Battle.net Authenticator after recovery. The hacked-account guidance also says a passkey can provide additional protection. Enable the options available in your account’s current security settings and store recovery information where you can reach it without sharing it with anyone else.
Blizzard says phone notifications may help recover access if there is a problem with the authenticator. Treat the phone number and email account attached to Battle.net as security controls: protect them with their own unique credentials and multifactor protection where available. An authenticator is not a substitute for a clean computer or a unique password; use all of the protections that apply to your account.

Review the account for changes
Inspect every character and realm you use. Look for unfamiliar characters, altered names, guild or social changes, changed contact information, and transactions you did not make. Add those details to the existing support ticket rather than opening multiple overlapping cases. Missing items fall under Blizzard’s compromised-account guidance, but Blizzard does not publish a universal promise that every lost item, currency balance, or character change will be restored.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not delete unfamiliar characters or alter suspicious settings before recording them. A clear record helps you answer support’s questions and distinguish an unauthorized change from a normal account action. Once you have documented the issue, follow Blizzard’s instructions for correcting the account.
Sign out other sessions when the interface offers it
If Battle.net security settings provide a way to end other sessions or remove remembered devices, use it after the password change. Recheck the account’s email, phone, authenticator, and passkey settings so an attacker has not added a recovery method of their own.
Recognize how accounts are commonly stolen
Blizzard identifies several recurring exposure routes:
- Reused credentials: A password leaked from another service can be tried against Battle.net.
- Phishing: A fake Blizzard page or message asks for login details or delivers malware.
- Malicious addons: An infected download or executable can capture credentials.
- Untrusted gold sellers and leveling services: Giving a third party access creates an opportunity for theft and can expose your login.
- Account sharing: Sharing credentials or logging in on someone else’s computer removes control over the account and its security.
- Malicious websites: A page that imitates a Blizzard or Battle.net sign-in can collect your password.
Keep your browser and security software current. Before entering a password, check that you are on a Blizzard or Battle.net address; do not rely on a familiar logo or page design alone. A page can look authentic while directing your credentials to someone else.
Handle phishing messages safely
Messages claiming to be Blizzard may arrive by email, chat, or in-game mail. Phishing is an attempt to impersonate Blizzard to obtain login details or infect the computer. Do not click the message’s recovery link, download its attachment, or reply with account information. Instead, close it, open a new browser window, and navigate to Blizzard’s official site yourself.
Be especially cautious when a message creates urgency, threatens account closure, promises missing-item recovery, or asks you to “verify” a password or authenticator code. Those requests do not change the safe process: use the official site and the recovery options displayed there.
Legitimate support communication should not turn a stranger into an authorized account owner. Anyone who promises instant restoration in exchange for money, a password, an authenticator code, or remote access is offering an unsafe alternative to Blizzard’s recovery process.
If you still cannot sign in
Use the recovery branch that matches the specific blocker rather than repeatedly trying random passwords. A changed password calls for password recovery. A forgotten email, security question, or account location calls for Customer Support. An authenticator problem calls for the authenticator-removal option shown in Account Recovery. A lock calls for the unlock option.

If self-service recovery does not resolve the problem, submit the support ticket from a clean device and explain exactly where the process stopped. Include the account’s symptoms and ownership information requested by the official form, but never disclose your current password or one-time security codes in ordinary correspondence.
If you regain access while the ticket is still open, update that same case rather than abandoning the history. Tell support that access has returned and list any remaining missing items or unauthorized changes. Recovery of login access and review of in-game losses are related but may not produce the same result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Blizzard has and has not promised
Blizzard’s official guidance says support reviews a compromised-account case and restores access, but the cited pages do not state a guaranteed response time, a fixed restoration scope, or a guaranteed outcome for an individual account. They also do not establish that every missing item will be returned. Plan for a support review rather than an instant rollback, and preserve accurate details so the reviewer can understand what happened.
The Account Hacked support page was shown as updated “2 weeks ago” in one crawl, while related login and account-security pages were shown as updated “8 months ago” and “7 months ago.” Those are relative labels that can change; the live pages and recovery portal are the authority when you begin the process.
