If you think someone has taken over your Facebook account, start at facebook.com/hacked—ideally on a device you’ve used to log in before. Facebook Help Center identifies this as its route for hacked accounts. Avoid starting from recovery links in unsolicited emails, texts, or social messages.
Start with Facebook’s hacked-account recovery route

On a device you have previously used to access Facebook, go directly to facebook.com/hacked. Facebook Help Center recommends this route if someone hacked your account.

Follow the recovery prompts Facebook presents. The exact steps can vary; use the official Facebook page rather than a link sent by someone claiming they can recover the account for you.

If Facebook asks you to complete a security check, do so through the official flow. Facebook says that some users may have to wait 24 hours after completing a check before they can log in. That is a possible security-check delay, not a guaranteed recovery timeline; friends may still be able to see the account during the wait.

Facebook’s Help Center does not promise that every account can be recovered. If the first attempt does not restore access, use the relevant recovery route rather than repeatedly trusting unsolicited offers of help.
Choose the recovery route based on your email and phone access
Access to the email address or phone number associated with the account affects which recovery option is available.

Facebook’s unavailable-contact guidance is available in a French-Canadian localized version, so labels and prompts may differ by language or account. Follow the current instructions shown by Facebook rather than relying on a fixed description of its screens.
After you regain access, secure the account
Once you can sign in, review the account’s security settings and enable protections that make a later unauthorized sign-in easier to detect or harder to complete.

Turn on two-factor authentication. Facebook describes an authenticator-app code, an SMS code, and a security key as options. The choice depends on your devices and what you can reliably access; Facebook’s guidance does not establish one as universally best.

Enable login alerts. Alerts can notify you about logins Facebook considers unfamiliar, giving you a chance to investigate activity you do not recognize.

Review security settings. Check the available account-security controls and make sure your recovery contact details are ones you can access.

Consider a security key for future sign-ins
A physical security key is an optional two-factor method, not a way to unlock an account that is already compromised. Facebook says the key must be a third-party U2F or FIDO2 key and advises checking compatibility with your browser and device before buying one. If your browser or device does not support the key, it may not work as intended.

Account-recovery urgency can make unexpected messages especially tempting. Facebook’s security guidance advises against clicking links or opening attachments unless you can verify both the sender and the content. Go directly to Facebook’s official recovery page instead of relying on a message that claims to provide a shortcut. This is a general precaution; it does not mean every Facebook recovery message is fraudulent.
