To record yourself and your screen, capture the display or window, camera, and microphone as separate sources in a recording app, then check a short test clip before making the full recording. For a configurable setup, use OBS Studio; for guided capture and sharing, consider Loom’s desktop app; Zoom Clips works when enabled for your account. On iPhone or iPad, the built-in screen recorder can capture narration. You do not need a separate camera, microphone, or light if your current setup produces clear video and speech.
Choose a way to record your screen and camera
The right option depends on whether you need source control, a guided workflow, an account-enabled clip feature, or a quick mobile walkthrough. There is no universally best choice: operating-system support, account access, editing and sharing needs, and the results of a test recording all matter.

Capture only the relevant screen area
Choose the display, window, or region that supports your explanation. Close unrelated windows and notifications where practical, and enlarge small interface text before recording. In OBS, display or window capture and camera sources can be moved, resized, layered, and cropped. Put the webcam overlay where it does not cover important controls or text.

Keep the camera frame unobtrusive
Make yourself visible without letting the camera bubble dominate the screen. A simple background and uncluttered setting help keep the presenter easy to see. Make your voice and image clear
Use the microphone you have, positioned well
Choose a quiet place and keep the microphone close to you. Speak at a moderate pace and volume, and check the application’s audio indicator or meters to ensure the intended microphone is active. A built-in microphone may be sufficient. A USB microphone is an optional upgrade if your current input does not produce clear narration; Zoom lists USB microphones among supported devices, but that does not establish that every USB model will sound better. A separate webcam is likewise optional: Zoom supports built-in and USB webcams, and OBS supports webcam capture sources. Use soft light and face the source
When possible, face a window or another soft light source. Avoid placing a bright window directly behind you, which can make your face difficult to see. Loom recommends facing a window when possible. Loom recording tips

Choose a resolution your setup can deliver
A resolution setting is not a guarantee of a high-quality result. The application, recording mode, device, camera, and plan can all affect the available options and output.
- Loom desktop: Loom says eligible plans and compatible devices can record up to 4K; Starter desktop recordings are limited to up to 720p. Loom also notes that webcam recordings may be lower quality than screen recordings. Check current plan and device eligibility in its recording-quality guide.
- Zoom Clips: Zoom documents Auto (1080p), 1080p, and 720p choices, with 360p available for some video-only clips. The options depend on the recording mode. See Zoom’s Clips guide.
Zoom’s published bandwidth guidance for 1080p HD video calling is 3.8 Mbps down and 3.0 Mbps up for both 1:1 and group calls. Those figures are for Zoom video calling, not a universal requirement for making a local screen recording. Zoom system requirements

Make a short test recording before the full take
Record a brief sample and play it back. OBS recommends testing for a few minutes before the first recording, and Loom also recommends a quick audio and video test. The playback matters: a moving meter alone cannot confirm that recorded speech is understandable or that screen text is legible.
- The correct screen, window, or region appears.
- Your camera is visible and does not cover essential content.
- The selected microphone is active and speech is understandable.
- Text and controls are readable at the size viewers will see.
- Audio and video remain in sync throughout the sample.

Plan what you will say
Write a brief outline or a few bullet points so you can stay on track without sounding scripted. Loom recommends preparing content and documents pause and resume and editing features, though feature availability may depend on plan. Loom recording tips
Record on iPhone or iPad with microphone narration
- Open Control Centre and use its screen-recording control.
- Before starting, turn on the microphone if you want to narrate.
- Record a short sample and play it back to confirm that the app allows capture and your narration is present.
- For a longer walkthrough, keep the device steady and make on-screen text large enough to read.
Apple notes that some apps may not allow audio or video recording, and screen recording cannot run at the same time as screen mirroring. Follow Apple’s instructions for recording the screen.
